Workhouse Lunatic Cells

Found an ancestor last year and seen he passed away of brain disease in a workhouse. Just recently found his records and it said he died in the lunatic cells. Does anyone have information on these cells. Was it a case of serious mental illness or was it anyone who struggled mentally in any way I.e. Depression or Anxiety.…
