Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was going to ask google to do something so I started by saying "Hey google" but I stubbed my toe and ended up saying "ahh bollix", all of a sudden RTE started playing :D:D:D

(feel free to change RTE to any radio presenter or station ;))

Play Newstalk fm still working for me.

Cheers, that's indeed the fix. My old request was play "Newstalk Radio" which stopped working sometime in the last two weeks. Wonder what changed & where

I renewed a Nest Aware annual cloud hosting subscription for my Nest Video Doorbell Camera (super device) last week. It cost €50 for the year and out of the blue a couple of days ago Google sent me a voucher for a free Google Mini with an RRP of €59  I already have a Google Home + 2 x Google Mini's so was thinking of using this one in a room where there's an old Hi Fi which has great speakers I repurposed to stream Spotify to via a Chromecast Audio device on the input source.

My question therefore is can I somehow pair this new Mini to the Chromecast Audio so that when I say "OK Google, play my Saturday morning playlist on Spotify" it automatically plays it on both the mini and on the Chromecast Audio Hi Fi (assuming the Hi Fi is powered on) without having to tell it to play it on the Hi Fi?

RTE 1 gone for me too, worked on TuneIN app and RTE stream.

Sorry I will just go on a rant here, RTE1 has been a persistent issue with G home, better in the last while but always issues. Why Why Why on earth can I not just ask it to play the actual RTE url Stream it's is F**king mad.
RTE have some exclusive deal with Amazon echo, so the echo takes the stream direct ala the BBC. I initially went G over amazon since I figured the hardware can't change that much but Google can do better software and also they try to parse the language more than amazon. Should have known better like most google projects they get it to a certain point and just move on. Also maybe it's my mind but the mic pick up seems to better worse as the months go on.

    Rant over :(

Yes, you can set a default audio device for each Home device, either itself, a Chromecast device, even another Home device. It's in the device settings in the Home app.

Same for me, RTE Pulse and Junior work fine, Radio 1 loads Tunein but then fails. It won't even recognise 2fm as a radio station.

Yeah, have to say rte 2fm now for it to work for that. Noticed that in the last few days. Radio 1 not working here either.

If it's the same as the other times its something to do with RTE and TuneIn - I complained to RTE and they seemed to be aware of the issue last time.

I just tried RTE 1 on tuneIn perfect, tried it while casting to my home from Tunein - wouldn't work.

Im currently looking at an Echo!

Not sure here but I came across this on the RTÉ website, updated 02/06
(https://www.rte.ie/eile/2017/1206/925436-introducing-rte-on-amazon-echo/) Did this page update coincide with changes to the TuneIn feed or link. Lyric & some of digital only stations are coming through fine.
There's a contact email so I dropped them a message to let them know the story.

Perfect, thanks RunDMC that worked perfectly.

Quick additional question. Is the optimum setting to have language set to Irish or UK English? I recall the language choice impacting some geo dependent services or localised type info but can't quite recall.

Tunein via assistant has now started needing "Dublin" put in front or after a bunch of radio station names where previously it assumed what you wanted based on location. e.g. there's probably a hundred Q102s in the world, and there was an entire chain of Spins across the globe at one point. So its affecting nearly everything somehow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭timetogo1

I opened the TuneIn app on my phone and marked Newstalk as a favourite. Now it plays on my Nest devices. I don't know if it's a coincidence.

I tried the same for RTE Radio 1. That still doesn't play. But that is a different error. It tries to play and then fails. Previously for Newstalk it just wasn't finding it at all.

Still pissed none of the UK Global stations work now, sure I can cast via my phone using their app but still...

Seems it was a Global decision to block listening outside of the UK (according to tune on help on twitter).

These are working now. I need to say 'play radio X London' or 'play LBC London' and they play through Global Player. Seems to have been implemented just in the past few weeks.

Got a reply from RTE when I noticed there was an issue yesterday and it seems that they have two ongoing issues with TuneIn streaming, which Google Assistant uses for streaming devices.

Actually purchased an Echo last night, worth playing with, ebay the Home or return the echo seeing how it goes.

For what its worth this was the exact same issue, when RTE didn't work for weeks about 2 years ago. Why on earth they can't just used the RTE direct stream is beyond me.

Its prob RTE having dedicated stream points for certain aggregation services.
Did a small bit of digging and see the TuneIn site uses this URL

All the radio stations are working for me again. Next time one stops I'll know that I should try guessing slightly different names, that's a bit annoying though.

The RTE radio stuff is just a joke on GHome, seems to be RTE's fault for only adopting the Echo platform natively.

Does anyone know if it's possible to put a schedule on the doorbell to stop it ringing after a certain time? I know there's quiet time but that has to be set every time

Asked my G home hub for a phone number, and I noticed the button to 'call them', I tapped it and it gave me instructions about the app - which I could not follow, other than seeing duo calling.

Is this actual phone calling or will it just give me an error that the business doesnt have Duo ? Are the calls free?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 6,543 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

Assume if the recipient had duo it would have dialled.....duo calls are free.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,005 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

I think it uses your Google contacts and will put it over Duo, my wife rang me via the Hub the other day, very strange getting a call from yourself

After a few years I've decided to get rid of my 3x Google homes (display, mini and full size). They're going backwards, they used to work fine but are now so buggy and troublesome that I've no longer an interest in them. I've never fully integrated them with home assistant like I wanted to and now Amazon looks like the better option. I'm gonna order an Alexa later today and make a start the changeover.

    Hey,
So you are basically me two weeks ago, I own 3 minis a Home and a Hub. Found them to be getting worse in terms of mic pick up, understanding of questions etc and personally the rte radio issue
    - currently RTE gold won't work, drives me nuts.

So I bit the bullet and got an Alexa, just one. Up side is it plays RTE radio quickly and has always worked thus far. However from time to time it ends up taking RTE radio1 from TuneIn rather than RTE not sure why.
Now the downsides - none of which are fatal but it's not all sunshine:
    • Alexa's natural voice is not natural, Googles is so much more 'human'
    • You think Google has issues parsing natural language for questions, Alexa is worse and point blank won't even try for some.
    • The thing of adding skils is kinda annoying, I don;t want to hunt down the skill for the thing, I just want the assistant to do what I ask (i know how I sound). For example I can't just ask play radio, that first neeed the rte radio 'skill'.
    • I miss the touch wheel volume up/down and the tap to mute/pause/stop from my Home.
Neither are the dream :( - if you want to ask a question about Alexa/Google since I have both happy to help, but im by no means an expert and have no smart lights/home integration.

Nope not working for me when I just tried assume its because of what explained in the tweet notes below.

Same happened to Global UK statikns a while back but now Google smart speakers pull the stream from the global player and not tunein.
