Oh, well north: about 300km! Checked out that part of the country before moving (during the 2003 heatwave, as it happens), but decided it would be too hot, even in a good year. Culturally and geographically/meterologically we're in a transistion zone between the north and the south, which in previous years has meant that we rarely suffer any of the "normal" extreme weather events that afflict either the great central plain to the north or the Massif Central to the south. Sometimes it's quite bizzare - on one occasion, all the school buses were cancelled due to heavy snow overnight in the département, but seeing as there were dry roads outside, bright sunshine, and double-figure temperatures at 7am, we didn't even think to listen to the radio for the alert. Spent a good half hour waiting with the neighbours waiting for a phantom ride! (The local government changed the go/no-go system after that débacle).

Montana governor declares emergency

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock declared an emergency Sunday for areas hit by an early-season snowstorm.
The storm was bringing heavy, wet snow and high winds that closed roads, downed trees and caused scattered power outages.
Bullock's declaration allows the state to mobilize resources to help affected areas.
Winter storm warnings were posted for parts of western Montana, northern Idaho and northeast Washington. Snow also was forecast for areas in Wyoming, Utah, Oregon, Nevada and California.

First Snow for the Date in Winnemucca (Montana, USA) Since at Least 1877

US harvested yields are coming in lower than expected throughout the midwest on the "good crops." 2020 looks to be potentially worse than 2019.

I've no pics, but Qualifying for the Australian MotoGp was cancelled this morning as the wind was so heavy, riders were being blown off the track!

Parts of South east Europe are having a heatwave at present. A friend in Romania close to the Black Sea said it is getting up to the mid 20s celsius. It should be in the lower single figures.

looks like a record breaking cold snap for the US on its way

This week's cold snap is only an appetizer compared with the main Arctic blast that's coming next week, meteorologists said. That freeze could be one for the record books.

"The National Weather Service is forecasting 170 potential daily record cold high temperatures Monday to Wednesday,” tweeted Weather Channel meteorologist Jonathan Erdman. "A little taste of January in November."

The temperature nosedive will be a three-day process as a cold front charges across the central and eastern U.S. from Sunday into Tuesday.
