Ladies and gentlemen may I proudly introduce you to the last Monday of January. So long January you will not be missed!

Roll on Feburary, a short snappy month which leads us into March where we don our greenery for a day and the evenings continue to get brighter and brighter :)

Am I the only weirdo who actually loves the dark evenings? Movies, jammies, early to bed, guilt-free chocolate, big fires etc etc I hate February, the last two years horrible things have happened, hoping its not 3 in a row :(

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,641 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

I love the dark evenings... before Christmas! After it's over they can feck off!

I hope this February is a happier one for you. xx

I quite like the early evenings but I also like the dark evenings in the winter. What I never liked was the dark mornings where it's only gradually getting sunny or clearer around 8am whereas in summer it's sunny from about 6am

My final Neighbour-Still-Has-Decorations-Up update for January 2014......*clears throat* so, our neighbour still has decorations up!!!

He did it. He made it to the end of the month. So, the question now is, which one of you lives beside me and is reading this :D

Its snowing like crazy here at the moment, I really hope it sticks.

    Nite all x

I'm a bad mommy. I woke the eldest (whos not old enough to be shook awake!) and took her out to see the snowfall last night. The sad face on her this morning when she looked out upstairs and could only see occasional patches in fields.....stupid rain.

ChewChew, he has three windows decorated, I presume they are his bedroom windows, he has an Angel - a Snowman - an Angel in each of the windows. They are about a foot and a half each. Then there are smaller bits placed round them. I'm not explaining this very well, but I think if I were to head over now with a camera there is a good chance ye might see me tonight on the Six One News :D

Well done to him!! Snow?? You must be up a mountain there in Mayo! All we are getting in Dublin in rain and wind!! Well January is over and February has begun. As Lough said, its a short month (though I must admit January went quickly. George Michael's last Christmas is becoming a distant memory!:D

Yes, the neighbour is live and kicking, I have seen him out and about loads since Christmas. micromary, sadly the snow was melted when we got up yesterday, but it was fab on Friday night, it was coming down thick and fast. When I opened the front door, it blew in on top of us. I can see Croagh Patrick in the distance :)

The only thing I have to say that is making me miserable is the bloody weather with all this flooding and rain. At this stage I would settle for snow then this stuff!!

I would love some snow instead of all this rain and wind, it feels like I'm being followed by flooding!!

Just to update, my neighbour - the legend, is still proudly displaying Christmas. We are now well into the next Season, so I'm thinking that at this stage, he is as well leave them as they are for Christmas 2014. I have to say, he put a smile on my face on the miserable mornings and did his bit to help me "beat the January Blues". Hope you're all well x

Your neighbour really is a legend!!

Hope you're well too Mayo_gurl. I don't know why but I'm always drawn to this thread on a Monday for some reason ;)

The decorations are gone!!! My weekend is ruined. I'll have to give in that the Season of Goodwill is well and truly gone for another few months. However, as its mid-March and he left them up this late, I have high hopes that he will add a bit of decor around mid-August.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 389 ✭✭micromary

Oh well! I did think that by St.Patrick's weekend they would all be down!! Onwards and upwards - brighter evenings, sunnier weather. I am trying to keep positive!!;)

Just spotted this thread and am bit worried - my advice would have been to start prepping for next Christmas! :D I start my shopping in jan sales and norm have a list I keep through the year of bits I would like to get like boys clothes for next year , summer garden toys , etc (if on offer in jan sales) I have two boys and an adult who have expensive taste when it comes to Santa pressies so I start in jan! Got my baby presents , my sisters , and most of my eldest lads stuff sorted! Maybe it's time to admit I have a problem ... Who knows! :D

Well, so much for my smugness and shopping habit. It has blown up in my face....well, my laptop blew up and took with it my spreadsheets. I have no idea whats up in the attic. I know there is a Disney Cars bike and the Sylvanian House On The Hill, but no idea what accessories for the house, or books or anything. I suppose it'd be worse if a pipe burst in the attic and destroyed everything.....

No, the stupid thing has passed to the next world. The guy that has put a new piece in my laptop said it couldn't be saved. Thankfully all my photos are on memory cards and stowed safely away, it would be worse to lose them. I am going to have to get the hang of the fancy-pants storage business on my ipad for the future.

Thanks for sharing my pain.... On the bright side, I'll be like the child at Christmas when I send Mr Mayo Gurl into the attic* with pen and paper :)

*Spider issues, I'm not going up!!

It's a great excuse to take the stuff down and have a good look through it! :) there are some great phone apps available which are password protected, and let you keep lists for individual people - that way you can keep an eye on pressies when your out and about ! :D

Glitzgirl, if you know how useless I am at technology you would cry. I had to text ILoveGalway (think thats my RL friends correct name) to find out how to send an email the other day from the ipad. I bought it last November on release day and the fact I bought it that day is the closest I have ever come to being technical :o

2 nights to go. Forget January and lets enjoy this beautiful time of year. Roll on too much food, drink. In fact the whole lot!

Most important thing for January = remember it comes around quickly again and 2. keep busy!

And here we are and the January blues have well and truely kicked in! I'm back to work tomorrow after almost two weeks off, I know I have no right to complain as I am very lucky to get so much time off not like the unfortunate world of retail and I'm only in for one day and off for two thanks to the way the holidays landed, but I'm just sad as this Christmas seemed to go wayyyy quicker than any other year as I was so busy!

My husband finished work on Christmas Eve and was back on the 30th. He had today off too, but otherwise he was working. For the couple of days he was back at work I didn't feel festive at all. It was kind of sad. :(

One thing that I would highly recommend to kick start the year and help with the January Blues would be to start a happy jar. I wrote down all the happy things that happened to me throughout the year and put them into a jar. (Two massive jars, actually, stuffed full of pieces of paper!) We read through them on New Year's Eve and it was lovely. We went through something very very difficult this year (last year now I suppose!) and reading all the great things we did helped us to realise that the hard times were outnumbered by the great times. I wrote down some funny conversations and things that happened too so we had great fun reading some of those! I've already started this year's jar and it's lovely to start the year with something so positive.

I just LOVE the Christmas decorations: we hang bunches of holly in every corner with red bows in it, and ivy along tops of doors etc. It looks lovely, if I say so myself, with little red cherry lights too.

I hate taking them down and always wait until January 6th has been and gone and I've put the Kings into the crib.
Next morning it's curtains for the holly but the dry bunches are wonderful kindling.
The corners looks so grubby and cobwebby afterwards so a bit of spring cleaning is due...and planning my annual Purdah:
I go out of social circulation and revel in solitary pursuits like reading, crafting, napping; and planning the next social event...one month after Christmas!

A part of the problem I find with Christmas in recent years is how quickly they want to kill it off after New Year's Day. There once was a feeling that NYD was the middle of the celebrations with the 6th January being the last day. Now, even the schools are finishing earlier and going back earlier and are back Monday whereas once it was the 7th.

The other end of the extreme is we hear too much about Christmas too early. Personally, I think Christmas should be from around 22nd December - 9th January in line with Christian teachings. But atheism combined with consumerism has made 6th January and the initial days after irrelevant for their agendas.

Notice all these agendas too? We are told to stock up and feast like there's no tomorrow during commercial Christmas period from around late October to NYD. Then, it is all diets, fitness and exercise for January. Again, we are being sold a lifestyle just because it is a certain month. Again, I hate all this post-Christmas day sales agenda too.

To beat the January blues? Well, do not go along with the official notion of what post-Christmas January is supposed to be. Do your own things, enjoy yourself and embrace different things. Continue on the Christmas feeling if you can. For some, especially shop workers, it is a good time to relax and I know many friends who look forward to the coming period when the hussle bussle of Christmas and the sales has receded. Also, be thankful for the nice weather thus far. Poor weather conditions ruined Christmas, January and half of February for us this time last year.

Builderplumber that maybe post of the year, despite the year being only two days old. I logged in to post a similar post on a different thread about how little Christmas the 6th of January isn't respected anymore.
