Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sorry Ded_Zebra doubt I would be able to make it that far although I do love Wicklow. Best of luck with the build though am really looking forward to seeing this one.

Not a bother at all. Maybe some other time if you're ever in the area on a weekend.

Was only in Ashford yesterday Dz. I came on here tonight though to tell you, there is an identical to yours (pre-resto) Samurai going around Clontarf. I saw it today and tried getting a pic for you but couldn't stop.

Ah you should have dropped me a PM I would have made tea :D

I would love to see a picture of that one if you see it again! Is it identical to mine in terms of colour etc? I have seen a dark grey one with a blue decal around Donnybrook a couple of times. A 1992 one I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,079 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Yep it looks to be the same colour as yours, a nice dark blue. It was parked up near St anne's park but I couldn't pull over anywhere for a pic, will keep an eye out for it again. It looked properly rough and ready too so whoever is driving it deserves a tip of my hat at least.

    Mine's black :P

I would be nearly tempted to just drive around the area and look for that lol. Starting this project has made me a proper hardcore enthusiast for theses little jeeps again :o

Haha you know it very well might be black! I only got a quick look at it and thought of yours and this thread. If you're ever in the area and wondering I saw it on the Vernon ave side of St annes park, I will keep my eyes peeled anyway!

Finally it's update time! Took a long time to get this image hosting sorted but i hope it works now.

The chassis went for a little drive once separated from the chassis.

    IMG_3360_zpsxd9ilptc.jpg

Years of oil spewing out of the distributer drive.

    IMG_3363_zpscse3ysca.jpg

    Filth everywhere

    IMG_3364_zpsaufaaehi.jpg

Gunk and some pre-cleaner to tackle the oil and the dirt. Pressure washer and scrubbing brushes too!

    IMG_3362_zpspqngjicg.jpg

    All cleaned up!

Next few pictures might not be in exact order but it won't reply matter. The body was up on blocks which made it tricky to get out of the shed. Many weekends were spent trying to think through how to get it out. While that was being thought through work was still being done!

    Lovely clean gearbox:)

    IMG_3371_zpsmxzzw3qj.jpg

    Gearbox off.

    IMG_3373_zpsy697o4sz.jpg

    Transfer box off too.

    IMG_3374_zpslutp910n.jpg

Then myself and a friend/boardsie worked at taking the shocks off. Bonus points of you recognise him,

    IMG_3643_zps6sfmfb50.jpg

Then myself and (mostly) the same boards above come up with an engineering solution to get the body out of the shed. We disassembled the engine crane and then lowered the body onto the base trolly bit. It was a bit touch and go lowering it onto the trolly for a while with the jacks but the 4 of us there managed to keep it under control.

Here it is lowered onto the trolly

    IMG_3684_zpsotns6qfc.jpg

    And another.

What utter knob wears yellow shoes? :)

Great to see it progressing along though, remind me to never let any of you measure anything again!

That Jeep will be a brilliant little car when it's finished.

    Time for some more updates!

    It was finally time to pull the body out. This is the setup that was used;

    Rope tied to the trolly
    IMG_3699_zpse9oxp880.jpg?t=1453844539

    IMG_3701_zpsmxgqrtle.jpg?t=1453844539

Some sort of 166/pulley setup :p

    IMG_3702_zpsh8raqiov.jpg?t=1453844539

    On it's way out

    IMG_3706_zpsmrau5sre.jpg

    IMG_3707_zpsyxbxgrcv.jpg

Finally the shed is empty :D

    IMG_3709_zpsqfkprnqp.jpg

The amount of dirt that fell off the car was unreal.

    IMG_3708_zpsli2jucqa.jpg

Chassis moved back into the shed.

    IMG_3710_zpsmkwqck6g.jpg

Floor washed and chassis back in. quadrifoglio verde ruining the photo :p

    1573280a-5452-42f9-934d-942ff1f748a6_zpsgzzyvavk.jpg

Axle stands actually under axles  That's not a common sight since victorian times

    IMG_3745%201_zpskmhks6am.jpg

Brake fluid was drained, really rotten looking. Probably there 10 years at least.

    IMG_3742%201_zpsivsgvgoh.jpg

    That's you fully up to date on the progress so far! The plan for next weekend is to;

    Take the brakes off.

Then check the condition of the differentials, I'm a bit worried about the amount of "slop" in them. I'll check the manual and if it's within the allowed service tolerance I'll leave them alone. If they are outside the allowed limit then I'll have a headache! If all is good I'll drain and replace the diff oil in the front and rear.

Next on the list if I get that far is to dismantle the suspension.

Exciting times and very ballsy progress! :)

Got sad when I seen the 166 and all the perseverance that went into it, then got really sad when I seen the red MR2, because MR2...

The red mr2 was bought with a broken smt gearbox. It was bought by my dad to break and sad as it is it has gone on to save many mr2s in the country. Then the green mr2 was bought with a knocking bottom end. The engine from the red car went into the green one to save it. Sadly the engine from the red car is burning a lot of oil so the green car isnt saved yet. The engine runs great though. Not sure how the project will end but that red car wasn't nice enough to be worth saving.

As for the 166. That was sad alright especially with the unbelievable amount of work that went into it. It's donated a lot of its parts to my current 166 though so in a way it lives on too.

I agree that it is a sad end for them but both have kept at least 1 other car on the road so it's worth it really :)

Did you ever attempt an engine rebuild? would it be cost effective, in say the mr2?

Never have no. It's my dad's project not my own. (he has never rebuild an engine either)

It's just for the fun of it that he decided to buy the green MR2 and fix it up. How hard can an engine rebuild be :p and if it goes badly what does it really matter!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,720 ✭✭✭Hal1

It looks like a straight forward enough process from what I've seen in vids and pics of some engine builds. The only thing I know I would struggle with would be dialing in cams and bores. All the work that involves timing and using micrometers etc. If you had a good teacher or manual with a lot of running back and forward to your comp for guidance. I'd say it's totally doable :).

Small bit more progress over the last weekend. First of all brake callipers off. Amazingly all the sliders were moving freely and all the rubbers were intact.

    IMG_3783_zpsbiidcpu4.jpg

    IMG_3784_zpsbs58i3zp.jpg

Next, taking the discs off. There's a hole you can thread a bolt into to force the disc off the hub.

    IMG_3791_zps9ijfltoc.jpg

    IMG_3792_zps8pqlm7fa.jpg

Taking the drums off the back is next. The trick to this is to use the wheels as a sort of a slide hammer to get the drum off over the shoes. This doesn't work with every car. The wheel studs for this jeep are different to the studs that hold the drum to the axle.

    IMG_3788_zpsuyltm8le.jpg

This is what's inside a drum brake for those of you who don't know.

    IMG_3789_zps7ahjy4hy.jpg

Master cylinder/ servo come off next.

    IMG_3793_zpspsfhsidc.jpg

The last thing I did was remove the anti roll bar. No rear anti roll bar on this car, front only.

    IMG_3795_zpsrsif0fdq.jpg

One of the bushes fell apart, the metal centre come out on the bolt ripping the rubber.

I do have an update I could post. I'll put it together now. Not too much has happened over that last while. Been busy doing a few bits and pieces to the daily driver and also helping my dad a bit with the MR2 as well a a few other things. Everything going to plan I should order some bits and bobs this week to push on!

Are you fvcking joking me! The fvcking post didn't post!!!! And that was after photobucket sh1t all over itself!

I'm not an angry man but that has tipped me over the edge!!! I'll try post it again tomorrow.

So next on the list was to take the back axle off.

Photos won't upload properly... Photo bucket is sh!tting all over itself:rolleyes:

Anyway Bolts out of the shackles

    IMG_3824_zps9cmoxtqn.jpg

Axle dropped. I Loosened all the other bolts and stuff when it was still on the chassis. It'll probably be easier when the axle is mounted securely rather than flying around on the bench.

    IMG_3825_zpsi67s1oth.jpg

Carried the axle down to the garage and put it on the bench.

    IMG_3827_zpsaj8htgqk.jpg

Wound the bushes out with a pullers. They were well shot!

Hello everyone! Just blowing the dust off this thread. This project has got a bit neglected for the last couple of months but I've just ordered a few bits! My aim is to have the chassis rolling again by the end of next month. :)

If the stuff gets delivered during the week I might take next Friday off to get started back into it :D

    Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

Here's what has arrived so far. Hopefully the chassis will be back rolling again in the next couple of weeks. I still have to get the dampers and figure out what I'm going to do with the steering linkage. At the moment all of the ball joints are tight and the boots are intact so technically they are fine... But at the same time I would like all new parts... What do you think I should do?

My plan for this evening is to have a good read of the manual and see what exactly I need to do with the axles.

I'd say go the whole hog, especially if it was sitting up.
They would probably deteriorate rapidly once you have it on the road!

I think you might be right. I think is about 2005 someone put a lot of work into it. I think that's when the springs axles and brakes were painted, the clutch is also dated 2005 and I think the belt was done then too. I suspect the steering linkage might date from then.

Just realised I forgot to buy Jizer and black paint . Back to Auto Care in the morning I suppose!

    Good evening all!

Just in from the shed now after working on the jeep all day. Spent today with a wire brush attachment on the angle grinder cleaning the chassis in preparation for paint. Unfortunately I did uncover a tiny rust hole in the chassis that will need to be dealt with. A neighbour is coming up in the morning (hopefully) who knows more about welding than me and we'll decide what the plan for dealing with the hole is.

I took some pictures but it's too much effort to post them now :p I'm absolutely knackered!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,792 ✭✭✭Ded_Zebra

Picture as promised! Not as many as I thought though, stupid new phone and camera did weirdness. Anyway.

Just as a reminder, here's the body as it stands.

    IMG_4152_zpsliukdnse.jpg

The chassis is still in the shed, completely untouched since the last picture you saw of it :( Thankfully things are happening again :D

    IMG_4151_zpssmyi7fm7.jpg

Mostly there is surface rust on the chassis, The plan is to remove all of the surface rust to prevent it from developing into something serious. I used a cup brush on the angle grinder to remove it.

    Before:

    IMG_4154_zpsbodz5l7u.jpg

    During:

    IMG_4155_zpss5vijbah.jpg

    IMG_4163_zpshtbg4jvt.jpg

    After of a different section:

    IMG_4156_zpsndlvitp4.jpg

I used a regular old hand wire brush to get into all the little areas, The arms are hanging off me this morning :pac:

After finishing cleaning off the top side I turned the chassis over to do the underside too. It's mad how light the chassis is! it can comfortably be picked up by 2 people.

    IMG_4161_zpsj6hnye7t.jpg

During the process this little rust hole was uncovered. I suspect there was a manufacturing defect here from day one, the weld wasn't fully completed. I've yet to decide how the repair will be done.

    IMG_4167_zpsuioqkgle.jpg

I also did a spot of masking in preparation for painting.

    IMG_4162_zpspbtkflsz.jpg

The plan for today now is to clean the shed and the chassis so its as close as possible to a dust free environment for painting. The plan is to get the chassis in primer today.

I'm watching this with great interest. I have one as a daily driver and its only a matter of time before I have to take it apart and do what you're doing. Either that or I'll sell it for something else stupid to drive every day :-)
