    I don't

"You don't" for what length of event at what % of maximum intensity though?

The Ultra distance races are by necessity at a lower intensity than the likes of Gaelforce Dublin and efficient use of fat stores is vital.

A lot of the multisport races on the Irish calendar are about an hour longer than GFD and for optimal preformance nearly everyone would benefit from simple carbs, and some salts.

In adventure race terms GFD is a short sprint, albeit taking about 3 hours. At high intensity effort I think simple carbs are a great idea. Along with salts.

(Gaelforce Dublin is somewhat of an outlier in that it is actually short enough to complete at high intensity with no food intake, just two bottles of carby water on the bike)
