Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Gospel LK 15:1-32

    Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus,
    but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying,
    “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
    So to them he addressed this parable.
    “What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them
    would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert
    and go after the lost one until he finds it?
    And when he does find it,
    he sets it on his shoulders with great joy
    and, upon his arrival home,
    he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them,
    ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’
    I tell you, in just the same way
    there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents
    than over ninety-nine righteous people
    who have no need of repentance.

    “Or what woman having ten coins and losing one
    would not light a lamp and sweep the house,
    searching carefully until she finds it?
    And when she does find it,
    she calls together her friends and neighbors
    and says to them,
    ‘Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.’
    In just the same way, I tell you,
    there will be rejoicing among the angels of God
    over one sinner who repents.”

    Then he said,
    “A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father,
    ‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’
    So the father divided the property between them.
    After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings
    and set off to a distant country
    where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.
    When he had freely spent everything,
    a severe famine struck that country,
    and he found himself in dire need.
    So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens
    who sent him to his farm to tend the swine.
    And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed,
    but nobody gave him any.
    Coming to his senses he thought,
    ‘How many of my father’s hired workers
    have more than enough food to eat,
    but here am I, dying from hunger.
    I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him,
    “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
    I no longer deserve to be called your son;
    treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’
    So he got up and went back to his father.
    While he was still a long way off,
    his father caught sight of him,
    and was filled with compassion.
    He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.
    His son said to him,
    ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you;
    I no longer deserve to be called your son.’
    But his father ordered his servants,
    ‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him;
    put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
    Take the fattened calf and slaughter it.
    Then let us celebrate with a feast,
    because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again;
    he was lost, and has been found.’
    Then the celebration began.
    Now the older son had been out in the field
    and, on his way back, as he neared the house,
    he heard the sound of music and dancing.
    He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.
    The servant said to him,
    ‘Your brother has returned
    and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf
    because he has him back safe and sound.’
    He became angry,
    and when he refused to enter the house,
    his father came out and pleaded with him.
    He said to his father in reply,
    ‘Look, all these years I served you
    and not once did I disobey your orders;
    yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns,
    who swallowed up your property with prostitutes,
    for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’
    He said to him,
    ‘My son, you are here with me always;
    everything I have is yours.
    But now we must celebrate and rejoice,
    because your brother was dead and has come to life again;
    he was lost and has been found.’”

    Commentary (Ignatius Study Bible: NT - Scott Hahn): The parable of the Lost Sheep. In a pastoral culture every sheep of one's flock was valuable, and shepherds would naturally rejoice when a stray was recovered (15:6). Jesus is the shepherd who restores us to friendship with God

    Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.’

    And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.
    “For the children of this world
    are more prudent in dealing with their own generation
    than are the children of light.
    I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth,
    so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
    The person who is trustworthy in very small matters
    is also trustworthy in great ones;
    and the person who is dishonest in very small matters
    is also dishonest in great ones.
    If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth,
    who will trust you with true wealth?
    If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another,
    who will give you what is yours?
    No servant can serve two masters.
    He will either hate one and love the other,
    or be devoted to one and despise the other.
    You cannot serve both God and mammon.”

    Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.
    When the poor man died,
    he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
    The rich man also died and was buried,
    and from the netherworld, where he was in torment,
    he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off
    and Lazarus at his side.
    And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me.
    Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,
    for I am suffering torment in these flames.'

    But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets.
    Let them listen to them.’

    but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
    Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
    neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’”

    Gospel LK 17:11-19

    As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem,
    he traveled through Samaria and Galilee.
    As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him.
    They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying,
    “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!”
    And when he saw them, he said,
    “Go show yourselves to the priests.”
    As they were going they were cleansed.
    And one of them, realizing he had been healed,
    returned, glorifying God in a loud voice;
    and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.
    He was a Samaritan.
    Jesus said in reply,
    “Ten were cleansed, were they not?
    Where are the other nine?
    Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?”
    Then he said to him, “Stand up and go;
    your faith has saved you.”

    "this foreigner": Of the ten who were cleansed, only the Samaritan expressed gratitude (17:16) and faith (17:19). Jesus' actions recall how Elisha cleansed a foreign leper while living in Samaria (2 Kings 5:114). At another level, he initiates the adoption of foreigners into God's covenant family as prophesied in Is 56:3-8. Back

    Jesus told his disciples a parable
    about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.
    He said, “There was a judge in a certain town
    who neither feared God nor respected any human being.
    And a widow in that town used to come to him and say,
    ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’
    For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought,
    ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,
    because this widow keeps bothering me
    I shall deliver a just decision for her
    lest she finally come and strike me.’”
    The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.
    Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones
    who call out to him day and night?
    Will he be slow to answer them?
    I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.
    But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

    The Judge's indifference to the widow's distress was a violation of justice. The parable's outcome is thus a mere shadow of God's concern for us. If an unjust and callous judge will vindicate a persevering widow, the Father will much more come to the aid of his prayerful children

    Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection,
    came forward and put this question to Jesus, saying,
    “Teacher, Moses wrote for us,

    and raise up descendants for his brother.
    Now there were seven brothers;
    the first married a woman but died childless.
    Then the second and the third married her,

    Finally the woman also died.
    Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be?

    “The children of this age marry and remarry;
    but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age

    Commentary: The teachings of this parable is that while hell and its agents are implacable in their efforts to work evil, they only act as a stimulus to the good, whose merits increase in proportion the persecutions which they undergo.     As in the preceding parable our Lord spoke of those who did not receive the word, so in this he speaks of those who receive the corrupted word; for it is a diabolical machination to confound error with truth. That the Church of God on earth consists of both good and bad; the 2d. that God is not the author of evil; the 3d. that God does not always punish the wicked on the spot, but patiently bears with them.     “See that you not be deceived,
    for many will come in my name, saying,
    ‘I am he,’ and ‘The time has come.’

    When you hear of wars and insurrections,
    do not be terrified; for such things must happen first,
    but it will not immediately be the end.”

    “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
    There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues

    they will seize and persecute you,

    You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends,

    Commentary: 'The man who sows,' says Saint Jerome 'is understood by most to be our Redeemer because He sows in the hearts of believers. The preaching of the Gospel is the humblest of all arts since it has for its message a Man-God, a Christ who died and the scandal of the Cross.

    If we compare such teaching with the doctrine and writings of the philosophers, with the brilliance and eloquence and the able composition of their discourse, we shall see how the good grain of the Gospel is the least, compared with all other seeds. Yet these, when they spring up show no vigour or power of resistance, while on the other hand, we see the Gospels, although hardly sown in the hear of a believer or the world at large, growing like a tree so that the birds of the air (by which it must be understood the souls of believers or powers of the world pressed into service of God) come to dwell among its branches (Third Nocturn)' (Dom Gasper Lefebvre OSB, St Andrew Daily Missal: with vespers for Sundays and Feasts, St André-near-Bruges, 1940)

    23:42 remember me: The penitent thief may have sneered at Jesus earlier (Mk 15:32). His conversion at the final hour is now manifest by his insight: he does not see Jesus' death as his demise, but looks forward to the coming of his royal kingdom. The promise of "Paradise" (Lk 23:43) is generously out of proportion to the man's simple request.

    The lesson from the flood is based on unexpected catastrophe (cf. Dan 9:26). Except for Noah and his family, the rest of his generation showed no concern for God. They were distracted by the concerns of the world.

    The Divine Judge will come soon, for death lies in wait for us and 'a thousand years are like yesterday' in the sight of God. At this, His second Advent, Christ will come to each to render to each according to his works. The Jewish race will continue to the end of the world to witness to this fact and be converted. Earthly kingdoms will then come to an end, while the heavenly kingdom will begin, to last eternally. God grant us a share in it.

    Lesson from the letter of St Paul the Apostle to the Romans

    Rom 15:4-13

    Brethren: Whatever things have been written have been written for our instruction, that through the patience and the consolation afforded by the Scriptures we may have hope. May then the God of patience and of comfort grant you to be of one mind towards one another according to Jesus Christ; that, on in spirit, you may with one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive one another, even as Christ has received you to the honor of God. For I say that Christ Jesus has been a minister of the circumcision in order to show God’s fidelity in confirming the promises made to our fathers, but that the Gentiles glorify God because of His mercy, as it is written, Therefore will I praise You among the Gentiles, and will sing to Your name. And again He says, Rejoice, you Gentiles, with His people. And again, Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles; and sing His praises, all you peoples.     The Gentiles will enter Heaven together with the people of God. Isias foretold that the Messias will be known by His miracles, and when John the Baptist himself, as the same Prophet predicted, a messenger from Almighty God, sent 'to prepare the way' of the Messias, caused our Blessed Lord to be asked if He were indeed 'He who art to come.' Christ proved His Divine Mission by the miracles worked by Him. 'But' St Gregory explains 'after so many wonders the death of Jesus caused great scandal in the hearts of men faithless to God; and Christ himself forewarned us against this stumbling-block to which the Jews fell victim.' Let us therefore, welcome our Lord in the lowliness of His manger, for then He will welcome us in His glory when He comes again to judge the world.

    The Jews seek to know who John the Baptist really is to whom the people are crowding for Baptism; 'If you wish to know,' Jesus had already told them 'John himself is Elias (St Matt. XVII, 12). 'There is here' St Gregory explains 'no sort of contradiction of the words of St John himself, for without being Elias in person, he has the power and spirit of Elias and is the forerunner of Christ in His First Coming, as Elias will be in the Second (9th lesson).

    On this Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday, we are invited to spiritual joy for the Lord is near, but we are also warned like the Pharisees to whom St John the Baptist said 'in the midst of you, there has stood One Whom you do not know.'

    Fr Zuhlsdorf has an interesting commentary: on all orations of this Mass:
    This Sunday’s nickname, “Gaudete” means “Rejoice!” Gaudete, an imperative of gaudeo and the first word of the Introit chant, sets the theme in the Novus Ordo and the older, Traditional Mass: joy. Advent is not strictly a penitential season the way Lent is. Since Advent is about Lord’s Second Coming, not just His joyful First at Bethlehem, we also prepare through penance, joyful penance, or maybe penitential joy. We sing Alleluia but not the Gloria. During Advent flowers and ornaments are put aside and musical instruments are not to be used, except organ to sustain congregational singing… except for today, when the discipline is relaxed. Gaudete parallels Laetare Sunday in Lent (which also means “Rejoice!”). Therefore, today is the only other Sunday we have rose (rosacea) colored vestments.

    Gospel MT 1:18-24

    This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
    When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
    but before they lived together,
    she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
    Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
    yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
    decided to divorce her quietly.
    Such was his intention when, behold,
    the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
    “Joseph, son of David,
    do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
    For it is through the Holy Spirit
    that this child has been conceived in her.
    She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
    because he will save his people from their sins.”
    All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

    Like the whole of the liturgy of this season, the purpose of the Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent is to prepare us for the twofold coming of Christ: His coming in Mercy at Christmas; and in justice at the end of the world. Allusion is made to the first in the Introit, Gospel, Offertory and Communion, and to the second in the Epistle; while the collect, Gradual and Alleleuia can be applied to either of the two.

    Mass During the Day

    Gospel JN 1:1-18

    In the beginning was the Word,
    and the Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.
    He was in the beginning with God.
    All things came to be through him,
    and without him nothing came to be.
    What came to be through him was life,
    and this life was the light of the human race;
    the light shines in the darkness,
    and the darkness has not overcome it.
    A man named John was sent from God.
    He came for testimony, to testify to the light,
    so that all might believe through him.
    He was not the light,
    but came to testify to the light.
    The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
    He was in the world,
    and the world came to be through him,
    but the world did not know him.
    He came to what was his own,
    but his own people did not accept him.

    But to those who did accept him
    he gave power to become children of God,
    to those who believe in his name,
    who were born not by natural generation
    nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision
    but of God.

    the glory as of the Father’s only Son,
    full of grace and truth.
    John testified to him and cried out, saying,

    because while the law was given through Moses,
    grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
    No one has ever seen God.

    Today the Church celebrates the Birth of the Word of God according to the flesh. In relatively recent times the three Masses on Christmas has symbolized respectively Christ's human birth from a Virgin, His spiritual birth in our souls, and His eternal birth from the Father.

    Commentary (Hahn) : Mary contemplates Jesus' birth and childhood, not from a distance, but as a participant in the mystery. Luke's insight suggests that Mary is either the direct or the indirect source of his information, since she alone could relate these hidden details of the story.

    On this the eight day after Christmas, the Church commemorates the Circumcision of our Redeemer, and also honours Mary's divine Maternity. The sinless Son of Man sheds for us the first drops of His Blood, and submits to a Mosaic Law.

But thinking that He was in the caravan, they had come a day’s journey before it occurred to them to look for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. And not finding Him, they returned to Jerusalem in search of Him. And it came to pass after three days, that they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who were listening to Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers. And when they saw Him, they were astonished. And His Mother said to Him, Son, why have You done so to us? Behold, in sorrow Your father and I have been seeking You. And He said to them, How is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?     The Church proposees for our imitation the virtues of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in their hidden and humble life in Nazareth, especially the subjection of he Son of God, thoughout His earthly life, by obedience to Mary and Joseph.

    Lesson from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans

    Rom 12:6-16

    Brethren: We have gifts differing according to the grace that has been given us, such as prophecy to be used according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, in ministering; or he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhorting; he who gives, in simplicity; he who presides, with carefulness; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them to the brim. And Jesus said to them, Draw out now, and take to the chief steward. And they took it to him. Now when the chief steward had tasted the water after it had become wine, not knowing whence it was - though the attendants who had drawn the water knew, - the chief steward called the bridegroom, and said to him, Every man at first sets forth the good wine, and when they have drunk freely, then that which is poorer. But you have kept the good wine until now. This first of His signs Jesus worked at Cana of Galilee; and He manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

    The Lord at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, brings before our eyes the miracle of changing water into wine prompted by Mary, His mother. This miracle establishes her as our Mediatrix

    he withdrew to Galilee.
    He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea,
    in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
    that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet
    might be fulfilled:
    Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
    the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles,
    the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light,
    on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death
    light has arisen.
    From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say,

    The Centurion asked only one word of Jesus so that his servant could be cured; similarly only one word is needed from our Redeemer to cure the leprosy of mortal sin.

    5:1 on the mountain: The setting recalls the giving 5 of the Law on Mt. Sinai. However, Moses brought the Law down the mountain to the people, whereas Jesus delivers his teaching to disciples who have come up the mountain.

    Commentary (Ignatius Study Bible: NT - Scott Hahn):
    Two illustrations show that disciples must be true to their calling lest they render themselves useless for the kingdom. Being the salt of the earth, they are to season and preserve the world with peace (Mk 9:50) and gracious speech (Col 4:5). Being the light of the world, they are to bear witness to Jesus and his message (Jn 1:9; 8:12). Both images have links with the OT.

    Commentary (Ignatius Study Bible: NT - Scott Hahn):
    An eye for an eye: Jesus forbids the misuse of Mosaic civil law to justify private vengeance. Exodus 21:24 was meant to limit retribution; it was never an invitation to inflict punishment for personal injuries or extend personal vengeance beyond the injury suffered (cf. Lev 24:20; Deut 19:21). The punishment had to fit the crime but not exceed it. Jesus eliminates such a policy of retaliation from personal life.

    Lesson from the second letter of St Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

    2 Cor. 11:19-33; 12:1-9

    Brethren: You gladly put up with fools, because you are wise yourselves! For you suffer it if a man enslaves you, if a man devours you, if a man takes from you, if a man is arrogant, if a man slaps your face! I speak to my own shame, as though we had been weak. But wherein any man is bold - I am speaking foolishly - I also am bold. Are they Hebrews? So am I! Are they Israelites? So am I! Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I! Are they ministers of Christ? I - to speak as a fool - am more: in many more labors, in prisons more frequently, in lashes above measure, often exposed to death. From the Jews five times I received forty lashes less one. Thrice I was scourged, once I was stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I was adrift on the sea; in journeyings often, in perils from floods, in perils from robbers, in perils from my own nation, in perils from the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils from false brethren; in labor and hardships, in many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Besides those outer things, there is my daily pressing anxiety, the care of all the churches! Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I am not inflamed? If I must boast, I will boast of the things that concern my weakness. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, Who is blessed forevermore, knows that I do not lie. In Damascus the governor under King Aretas was guarding the city of the Damascenes in order to arrest me, but I was lowered in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands. If I must boast - it is not indeed expedient to do so - but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago - whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows - such a one was caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man - whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows that he was caught up into paradise and heard secret words that man may not repeat. Of such a man I will boast; but of myself I will glory in nothing save in my infirmities. For if I do wish to boast, I shall not be foolish; for I shall be speaking the truth. But I forbear, lest any man should reckon me beyond what he sees in me or hears from me. And lest the greatness of the revelations should puff me up, there was given me a thorn for the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to buffet me. Concerning this I thrice besought the Lord that it might leave me. And He has said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for strength is made perfect in weakness. Gladly therefore I will glory in my infirmities, that the strength of Christ may dwell in me.

    Luke 8:4-15

    At that time, when a very great crowd was gathering together and men from every town were resorting to Jesus. He said in a parable: The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air ate it up. And other seed fell upon the rock, and as soon as it had sprung up it withered away, because it had no moisture. And other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. And other seed fell upon good ground, and sprang up and yielded fruit a hundredfold. As He said these things He cried out, He who has ears to hear, let him hear! But His disciples then began to ask Him what this parable meant, He said to them, To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God, but to the rest in parables, that ‘Seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. And those by the wayside are they who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. Now those upon the rock are they who, when they have heard, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, but believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among the thorns, these are they who have heard, and as they go their way are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not ripen. But that upon good ground, these are they who, with a right and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast, and bear fruit in patience.

    S. By the words of the Gospel may our sins be blotted out.


    Distrusting our own powers we should always have perfect confidence in God's grace which will be 'sufficient' for us if we humbly ask for it. May then the seed of God's word find 'a right and good heart' in us to receive it, that we may bear much good fruit in patience.

    Look at the birds in the sky;

    Are not you more important than they?

    Why are you anxious about clothes?
    Learn from the way the wild flowers grow.

    will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?

And if I have prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, yet do not have charity, I am nothing. And if I distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, yet do not have charity, it profits me nothing.     Brethren: We entreat you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says, In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation! We give no offense to anyone, that our ministry may not be blamed.     As Christ Himself was tempted by Satan, so are we. Our strength to resist lies in fasting, in guarding and controlling our senses, in almsgiving, in prayers, and uniting ourselves with Christ in Holy Mass and Communion.

    Gospel MT 17:1-9

And His face shone as the sun, and His garments became white as snow. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking together with Him. Then Peter addressed Jesus, saying, Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You will, let us set up three tents here, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elias. As he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased; hear Him. And on hearing it the disciplines fell on their faces and were exceedingly afraid. And Jesus came near and touched them, and said to them, Arise, and do not be afraid. But lifting up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus cautioned them, saying, Tell the vision to no one, till the Son of Man has risen from the dead.

    The Transfiguration of our Lord gives us an idea of the beauty of a soul in the state of sanctifying grace. 'This is the will of God, your sanctification.' It must be our firm determination to preserve he divine life of our soul, at any price.

    Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar,
    near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
    Jacob's well was there.
    Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well.
    It was about noon.

    A woman of Samaria came to draw water.
    Jesus said to her,
    "Give me a drink."
    His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
    The Samaritan woman said to him,
    "How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?"
    —For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.—
    Jesus answered and said to her,
    "If you knew the gift of God
    and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink, '
    you would have asked him
    and he would have given you living water."
    The woman said to him,
    "Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep;
    where then can you get this living water?
    Are you greater than our father Jacob,
    who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself
    with his children and his flocks?"
    Jesus answered and said to her,
    "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again;
    but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst;
    the water I shall give will become in him
    a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
    The woman said to him,
    "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty
    or have to keep coming here to draw water."

    Jesus said to her,
    "Go call your husband and come back."
    The woman answered and said to him,
    "I do not have a husband."
    Jesus answered her,
    "You are right in saying, 'I do not have a husband.'
    For you have had five husbands,
    and the one you have now is not your husband.
    What you have said is true."
    The woman said to him,
    "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.
    Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain;
    but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem."
    Jesus said to her,
    "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming
    when you will worship the Father
    neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
    You people worship what you do not understand;
    we worship what we understand,
    because salvation is from the Jews.
    But the hour is coming, and is now here,
    when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth;
    and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him.
    God is Spirit, and those who worship him
    must worship in Spirit and truth."
    The woman said to him,
    "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ;
    when he comes, he will tell us everything."
    Jesus said to her,
    "I am he, the one speaking with you."

    At that moment his disciples returned,
    and were amazed that he was talking with a woman,
    but still no one said, "What are you looking for?"
    or "Why are you talking with her?"
    The woman left her water jar
    and went into the town and said to the people,
    "Come see a man who told me everything I have done.
    Could he possibly be the Christ?"
    They went out of the town and came to him.
    Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat."
    But he said to them,
    "I have food to eat of which you do not know."
    So the disciples said to one another,
    "Could someone have brought him something to eat?"
    Jesus said to them,
    "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me
    and to finish his work.
    Do you not say, 'In four months the harvest will be here'?
    I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest.
    The reaper is already receiving payment
    and gathering crops for eternal life,
    so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.
    For here the saying is verified that 'One sows and another reaps.'
    I sent you to reap what you have not worked for;
    others have done the work,
    and you are sharing the fruits of their work."

    Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him
    because of the word of the woman who testified,
    "He told me everything I have done."
    When the Samaritans came to him,
    they invited him to stay with them;
    and he stayed there two days.
    Many more began to believe in him because of his word,
    and they said to the woman,
    "We no longer believe because of your word;
    for we have heard for ourselves,
    and we know that this is truly the savior of the world."

    4:10 living water: An expression with two levels of meaning. The woman takes it to mean "flowing" water, i.e., a preferable alternative to stagnant well water (4:1112). Jesus, however, is speaking of the life and vitality of the Spirit

    Lesson from the letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians

    Eph 5:1-9


    Brethren: Be imitators of God, as very dear children and walk in love, as Christ also loved us and delivered Himself up for us an offering and a sacrifice to God to ascend in fragrant odor. But immorality and every uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becomes saints; or obscenity or foolish talk or scurrility, which are out of place; but rather thanksgiving. For know this and understand, that no fornicator, or unclean person, or covetous one - for that is idolatry - has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one lead you astray with empty words; for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the children of disobedience. Do not, then, become partakers with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk, then, as children of light, for the fruit of the light is in all goodness and justice and truth.

If, then, Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because you say that I cast out devils by Beelzebub. Now, if I cast out devils by Beelzebub, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When the strong man, fully armed, guards his courtyard, his property is undisturbed. But if a stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he will take away all his weapons that he relied upon, and will divide his spoils. He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters. When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he roams through waterless places in search of rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house which I left.’ And when he has come to it, he finds the place swept. Then he goes and takes seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse that the first. Now it came to pass as He was saying these things, that a certain woman from the crowd lifted up her voice and said to Him, Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts that nursed You. But He said, Rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.

    We see Jesus today in open conflict with Satan and his works. So also during Lent, which is a time when the struggle against the old man is more intense, should we 'live as children of the light,' performing actions good, just and true.

    Gospel JN 9:1-41

    As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth.
    His disciples asked him,
    "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents,
    that he was born blind?"
    Jesus answered,
    "Neither he nor his parents sinned;
    it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him.
    We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day.
    Night is coming when no one can work.
    While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
    When he had said this, he spat on the ground
    and made clay with the saliva,
    and smeared the clay on his eyes,
    and said to him,
    "Go wash in the Pool of Siloam" —which means Sent—.
    So he went and washed, and came back able to see.

    His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said,
    "Isn't this the one who used to sit and beg?"
    Some said, "It is, "
    but others said, "No, he just looks like him."
    He said, "I am."
    So they said to him, "How were your eyes opened?"
    He replied,
    "The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes
    and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.'
    So I went there and washed and was able to see."
    And they said to him, "Where is he?"
    He said, "I don't know."

    They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees.
    Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath.
    So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see.
    He said to them,
    "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see."
    So some of the Pharisees said,
    "This man is not from God,
    because he does not keep the sabbath."
    But others said,
    "How can a sinful man do such signs?"
    And there was a division among them.
    So they said to the blind man again,
    "What do you have to say about him,
    since he opened your eyes?"
    He said, "He is a prophet."

    Now the Jews did not believe
    that he had been blind and gained his sight
    until they summoned the parents of the one who had gained his sight.
    They asked them,
    "Is this your son, who you say was born blind?
    How does he now see?"
    His parents answered and said,
    "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
    We do not know how he sees now,
    nor do we know who opened his eyes.
    Ask him, he is of age;
    he can speak for himself."
    His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews,
    for the Jews had already agreed
    that if anyone acknowledged him as the Christ,
    he would be expelled from the synagogue.
    For this reason his parents said,
    "He is of age; question him."

    So a second time they called the man who had been blind
    and said to him, "Give God the praise!
    We know that this man is a sinner."
    He replied,
    "If he is a sinner, I do not know.
    One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see."
    So they said to him,
    "What did he do to you?
    How did he open your eyes?"
    He answered them,
    "I told you already and you did not listen.
    Why do you want to hear it again?
    Do you want to become his disciples, too?"
    They ridiculed him and said,
    "You are that man's disciple;
    we are disciples of Moses!
    We know that God spoke to Moses,
    but we do not know where this one is from."
    The man answered and said to them,
    "This is what is so amazing,
    that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes.
    We know that God does not listen to sinners,
    but if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him.
    It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind.
    If this man were not from God,
    he would not be able to do anything."
    They answered and said to him,
    "You were born totally in sin,
    and are you trying to teach us?"
    Then they threw him out.

    When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out,
    he found him and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
    He answered and said,
    "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?"
    Jesus said to him,
    "You have seen him,
    the one speaking with you is he."
    He said,
    "I do believe, Lord," and he worshiped him.
    Then Jesus said,
    "I came into this world for judgment,
    so that those who do not see might see,
    and those who do see might become blind."

    Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this
    and said to him, "Surely we are not also blind, are we?"
    Jesus said to them,
    "If you were blind, you would have no sin;
    but now you are saying, 'We see,' so your sin remains.

    Commentary (Ignatius Study Bible: NT - Scott Hahn):
    9:3 the works of God: The man's blindness was part of the providential plan of God (11:4). Giving physical sight to the blind is a sign that Jesus gives us spiritual sight to see earth in light of heaven, time in light of eternity, and our lives in light of our destiny.

    Galatians V:22-31


    Brethren: It is written that Abraham had two sons, the one by a slave-girl and the other by a free woman. And the son of the slave-girl was born according to the flesh, but the son of the free woman in virtue of the promise. This said by way of allegory. For these are the two covenants: one indeed from Mount Sinai bringing forth children unto bondage, which is Agar. For Sinai is a mountain in Arabia, which corresponds to the present Jerusalem, and is in slavery with her children. But that Jerusalem which is above is free, which is our mother. For it is written, Rejoice, O barren one, that do not bear; break forth and cry, you that do not travail; for many are the children of the desolate, more than of her that has a husband. Now we, brethren, are the children of the promise, as Isaac was. But as then he who was born according to the flesh, persecuted him who was born according to the spirit, so also it is now. But what does the Scripture say? Cast out the slave-girl and her son, for the son of the slave-girl shall not be heir with the son of the free woman.Therefore, brethren, we are not children of a slave-girl, but of the free woman - in virtue of the freedom wherewith Christ has made us free.

Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. When, therefore, Jesus had lifted up His eyes and seen that a very great crowd had come to Him, He said to Philip, Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? But He said this to try him, for He Himself knew what He would do. Philip answered Him, Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, that each one may receive a little. One of His disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him, There is a young boy here who has five barley loaves and two fishes; but what are these among so many? Jesus then said, Make the people recline. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore reclined, in number about five thousand. Jesus then took the loaves, and when He had given thanks, distributed them to those reclining; and likewise the fishes, as much as they wished. But when they were filled, He said to His disciples, Gather the fragments that are left over, lest they be wasted. They therefore gathered them up; and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. When the people, therefore, had seen the sign which Jesus had worked, they said, This is indeed the Prophet Who is to come into the world. So when Jesus perceived that they would come to take Him by force and make Him king He fled again to the mountain, Himself alone.
