It's going to be an extremely windy day, Met Éireann have issued a Severe Weather Warning:
    Stormy weather expected on Tuesday.

South to southwest winds will reach speeds of 30 to 40 mph in the morning, with gusts of 50 to 70 mph.
They will become west to southwest in direction during the afternoon and evening, and reach speeds of 45 to 55 mph with gusts of 80 to 100 mph in exposed parts of the West and North.
Elsewhere gusts of 70 to 80 mph can be expected

There is also a risk of coastal flooding in the Northwest on Tuesday and Tuesday night due to the extremely strong onshore winds.

    Valid 0600 11/1/05 to 0600 12/1/05

I've been highlighting this risk for days now

All areas will have land gales on Tuesday with sustained windspeeds
upto 32mph everywhere! Coastla counties of the east and south can
expect mean speeds to reach 45mph, but its western and northwestern
areas that i fear may be taken unawares

The Low Pressure system will deepen to just under 950mb
north of Donegal and pack in sustained winds of 70mph
just off shore, it is realistic to expect that northern
and western coastal counties can expect gusts to
100mph with gust anything upto 75mph elsewhere  ;)

Take a look at this beast.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Yes theres a risk of some snow for 36hrs from 12z tomorrow

The good thing about this storm is we should see its
    power during datime
What on earth is good about a dangerous storm coming in the day time when more people are up and about to get injured?
and its going to get a whole lot deeper when it enters phase 2 of developnment :D

I'd have let you away with that comment only for the smiley.
Kindly Tone down the Glee regarding dangerous storms.
your mission here is to be informative, glee is acceptable for a few inches of snow but its definitely not acceptable where 60 to 100 mph wind gusts are concerned.

Its not looking good for road conditions, pity I have to drive from Mullingar to Bray at six in the morning :(

It wont be at its worst at that time.
Infact that might be relatively the calmest part of tomorrows storm.
I'd be more worried about an afternoon journey back.

Hi Earthman i do agree that my smiley's are abit OTT
but i cant hide the fact that i love a good storm,
be it 60mph gusts or 120mph of course thats with
the safety of my home. A total and much more
responsible approach is available on my site as
i use the board to express my perosonal feeling unlike
where my site is for serious forecasts ;)

I will amend my posts and sorry for any inconvienence
or insult caused by i still stay true to the fact
that i love a storm and the development of one
can be one of the most beautiful sights in the world :)

I'd just like to add a Warning to all those in the north and west -
From the Hours of 0900 to 0300am on Wednesday wind gusts will
frequently surpass 80mph with wind gusts peaking at around 1800
in northwestern areas with gusts possible to 105mph. I would advice
against any travel in Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Derry, Leitrim, Sligo and
other northwestern Coastal counties between 1400 - 2000 at all.
If it means staying in work until the storm passes
i strongly advice you to stay put because if your driving a car
at any speed and a 100mph gust whizzes by, your car will hold no
chance and will ultimately be driven off the road or possibly blown over!
    This is not a joke...

Gusts to 80mph can bring down a strong sterdy tree and knock
    down powerlines..

If you take the choice to travel your literally dicing with death...

Elsewhere i would advice against travel unless vital from 1400 -2000
with gusts to 85mph possible with frequent gusts passing 70mph...

Please take care, this storm will be the worst storm in many years....

Thanks very much weathercheck. Very informative. Just wondering would any of this info get me out of work for the week. Could do with a rest, you know after all that Christmas and New Years celebration, and with only getting 17 days off during it.

    Hi all,

Just want to know if I'll avoid the worst of the weather tomorrow. My semester exams are starting tomorrow and I have to travel the 17 miles from my home in Listowel, Kerry to Tralee on the 0800 bus tomorrow from my exam which begins at 0930. The exam finishes at 1130 which means my bus home will be at 1300. I hope to be home for 1330. Will i avoid the worst?

Unfortunately I have another exam on Wednesday which probably means that I'll be studying by candlelight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 649 ✭✭✭Kazujo

I could be driving into work tomorrow from 5:30 to 6:45 from Balbriggan to Clondalkin, I drive a bike should I seek an alternative for the journey or will it all have blown over by then do you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Latest models reduce the risk of high winds in the east 75mph
Gusts probably a reasonable estimate but still 100mph gust in the
northwest..night all and stay safe ;)

Ok guys-for the flights Thursday will be fine.
It will be calm by then.

As regards traveling to and from exams in Listowel/Tralee it will be very windy at the time of travel i think but only starting to get bad, you are way down south so you should be on the quieter side of this storm.

Take a look at the wind figures around the coast in the picture on the Met Eireann site.
    http://www.met.ie/forecasts/

    Also on their front page.
Never seen figures such as 82 or 74 before. Thet're incredible speeds.

They have 43-50mph for central Irish sea.

These are mean speeds, gusts are much higher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

The storm is now undergoing rapid cyclogensis and spiralling out of control
100miles west of Ireland it will pass about 20 miles of the northwest coast
at around 1400-1500 delivery the highest winds and the southwest flank
of the LP at around 1500-1600 ;)

Does that mean the storm is likely to be more or less severe and has the track changed also? Thanks for all the information Weathercheck, its very interesting.

    what about dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,040 ✭✭✭threebeards

It was really bad here in Westport this morning about 9a.m. and then calmed down completely. Obviously (to coin a cliche) the calm before the storm because the wind has really picked up again in the last hour and I doubt if it's even a guide as to what it will be later.

*looks for candles and holy water*

Trees begining to fall in the letterkenny area, expect power outage shortly

Just wondering will the south east see much of this storm, particularly Waterford/Wexford? What time will it hit us?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Hi All wesford and waterord wont be affected that bad
although gusts upto 75mph are possible, recent
OBS show a gust of 72mph in Dublin at 3pm

Quite startly OBS reported at 3:30 around the center
of the Low with sustained winds reaching 90Knots
    or 100mph....

A secondary low feature has formed in the back edge
of the storm which will icnrease the gradient
off pressure further south when it arrived in about
4-5 hours it will affect most areas with snowfall
    likely.......

Am I right in saying the peak of the storm in the west was to be between 3 adn 6 today? If so, we're getting away very lightly. It's a bit windy yeah, but nothing worse than many other January days I've seen. Weathercheck, is it likely that it might get worse later?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Yes in the next few hours as the southwest quadrant comes
ashore with lots of heavy and thundery showers gusts to 100mph
are likely around the west and northwest coast probably 80+ inland
and 70 or so further east ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Off course the reason for you not experiencing really high winds
is because you might be sheltered in the foot of a hill or something..
and as the wind direction changes you'll be affected more??
Although i cant be sure ;)

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,961 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

So far this storm has turned out to be no more than an average windy day here, quite calm at times with the odd gust every few minutes, nothing like what we had last Friday and Sunday night.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

So far the 7th and 8th had stronger gusts. Did get a mean speed of 38mph this morning which is almost gale force, which is a rare occurance here. It's relatively quiet now even in the showers.
Often it's the westerly wind that gives me the strongest gusts, so perhaps there may be more action yet, and now as I type, it's hailing, but mean speed is only 20mph.

West Scotland have recorded gusts to 117mph (lowland site)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Agree with you there Gonzo ;)

Although things in the last 30minutes have turned really bad
a gust of 100mph was reported in Donegal Airport!!!

Poor Old west Scotland is gettinghammered with sustained 90mph
winds.....yes sustained and gust have reached just under 120mph
thats unreal, we are so so so lucky that this storm tracked
that 150miles further north than expected 48hrs ago
or we would be in deep crap ;)

Report at 20:00 from North Rona

hehe, i dont really like the wind.. all im interested in is snowstorms in the winter so I can take off and have free days besides it looks pretty and in the summer i like scorching hot heatwaves over 28C so i can sit back and relax with some beers and bbq's in the garden but unfortunately both these extremes rarely happen in ireland:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Sustained 101mph winds in North Rona with gusts to 125mph
a high grade CAT2 Hurricane if it was warm cored!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,285 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

I can hear the wind howling outside, driving rain as well. I am meant to be catching the 06:10 British Airways flight to Heathrow tomorrow morning from Glasgow Airport but I doubt I will get much sleep with that noise outside

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Although generally winds are now abating over the country
squally showers will increase with intense 70KT winds in the
upper atmosphere that can make it to the ground in these
showers so fessibly 80mph wind gusts are possible in the
next 6 hours espcially as a minor disturbance moves in from the
west later tightning the gradient ;)

    Yes

theunder and lightening and hailstones as big as bal bearings in the letterkenny area, wind seems to have settled some what, probably down to a change in direction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

    And then there was snow!!!

Snow in Malin and Knock with a batch spreading east :D
