Of the 404km & 5hrs of constant rain what performed well & not so well?

Rev'it Compass H2O "waterproof" boots. Not so much. Feet wet by 1st point (16) - 1 1/2 hrs or so. 0/10

Hein Gericke Jacket - Tour something or other. Worked a treat and would have been even better around the neck if I'd remembered to bring and use the storm collar. All pockets dry. 10/10

Rev'it gloves - winter version. Warm and dry. Water only got in with removing gloves to fill tank & take photos. 9/10

Dainese goretex trousers. pocket wet inside. 9/10

Nolan 100-5. Water only really got in when raising the front at filling station, otherwise grand. 9/10

Great to be out and about! Fair play for going out in that weather.

Have a few points got myself in IPR and IBA. Looking for a nice week weather to maybe do them all in one week.

Only now that you posted these pics, I think I've seen you on the N7 a few times in the past heading to Dublin, I was the red blur blasting past you LOL

LOL, I know, I meant in the past, I've seen an explorer in that colour a few times heading towards Dublin.

 Tis a Tiger 800. Triumph only used the colour for 1 year (2011) & only about 6 months of that with the silver frame - so uber rare (ish)

I'll continue to watch out for red blur's passing me

    Edit:
Rev'it gloves are Chevak Gore-Tex and worth the money.

Jaysus, is this thing arranged by rah heads or what? :pac:

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

Myself and the Son are doing both the Irish Photo Rally and the Iron Butt Wolfhound photo rally. In most cases the photo points for each Rally are close enough to each other.
You definitely get to ride along some brilliant roads you were never going to see.
It's great to go for a ride with a decent route to follow, rather than just ride the usual "Sunday Spin" routes.

Doing both as well. Its super getting down roads that Google/Garmin etc wouldnt normally send you. Some really dingers!

Caherciveen,Kerry point alone is a great destination.
Views of Valencia and the Blaskets, Two stone forts and a derelict castle on the approach. An enticing track meandering into the hills.
Gift shops now open. Can go home with a tea-towel or an Aran jumper to top-off the day.
(BTW Never heard of peat charcoal before. )

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭mgbgt1978

Great spot. Was there about 4 weeks ago. And even better, if you come back via the Iron Butt location (rather than the ring of Kerry) you get to ride a fantastic little road over the mountains and past Carrauntoohil.

650kms done yesterday. Group of us headed out. Unreal weather for biking:

2 Iron Butt/Wolfhound points, 5 Irish Photo Rally & 3 BMW points. The BMW are an addition to the Ulster points on the Irish Photo Rally:

Myself and the lad did 7 points today . Travelled from Limerick up to Belturbet via Mullingar and back down via Ballinasloe.
Got 5 IPR points and 2 Iron Butt.
He's planning on doing the Iron Butt 1, 000 miles in a couple of weeks. Asked me to join him...decided I'm past riding a Bike for 22 hours non-stop.
8 hours is enough for me, especially when his idea of 'taking it handy' means just slightly less frantic than a Mondello Track Day.

Sounds like a good spin. Going to head out to do a few points around Leinster tomorrow. Planning to take a week off in August to knock off the rest of them.

Hadn't heard of the Iron Butt thing before. Just reading up a bit about it now. Riding through tiredness for 20+ hours to get some kind of boy scout badge wouldn't interest me. Each to their own, I suppose.

Totally agree. Cannot see the point of going through the torture just for a sore ar$e.
They're a worldwide set-up, so there must be a good bit of interest in the concept.
If it wasn't for their Photo Rally they wouldn't even be on my Radar.

My Son would go for a 150km spin at 5pm just for the craic, so I can see why he's keen to do the 1,000 miles. As I said though, he'll be on his own.....

Got around to doing 2 of the points yesterday.

Hit Platin Tower, which struck me as odd as I couldn't see an easy spot to get a good photo (as shown here!)

And then also hit the Martin Monument (or Shrigley Monument on Google Maps?) near Downpatrick.

Had intended on going further and hitting Stormont, but as my phone was consistently losing power despite charging off the bike, I didn't fancy facing Belfast without navigation and decided to leave it for another day. Did just under 200 miles total, was a nice spin.
