Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does it ask if you are M or F at stage 1?

Does it ask if you are M or F at stage 1?

Well they have your details but then there's the usual questions at the end about gender, age, religion etc which you can skip but I personally answered(I usually do)

Glad my male gender didn't stop me getting through stage 1.

Some of the questions were tricky, on the multiple choice I always went on the side of safety. There were a couple of questions around trains and infrastructure that weren't more than a 20 second google search.

Interesting test, can't see why anyone internally wouldn't pass it as they'd be at more an advantage.

It's not this test, it's the heap of classes and exams after the standardised tests they may be unwilling (or unable) to get through. Lots of them are happy enough doing whatever until retirement with no inclination to ever go driving.

Have you received any emails from OPC/IR in regards to the test or is it just you haven't received one to say you failed?

    EDIT: Just got mine there!

I got an email this morning inviting me to the next stage of tests. Anyone do these yet?

    Yes, just received it there.

    I'm out.

Maybe it's cause I didn't f*ck the pregnant women to the back carriage or something.

Don't think it was that. I left her in the carriage.

I'd say whether or not you got through was down to the algorithm within the questions we answer rather than it being down to a specific few questions.

Has anyone completed the next stage yet?

Was nice to have 24hr of day dreaming about becoming a train driver.

Anyway, I was honest with my answers, usually I would do a dummy account trail run and then do another one.

Didn't bother, if the system is accurate, then I am not suitable and so be it.

Best of luck to all, doesn't look like plain sailing this process.

Passed the 1st stage. Because I'm female?! :p

Had a look at the practice tests just now and they don't seem too bad

Surprised to hear back that quickly, hopefully next round will be the same!

The Union are probably waiting in the sidelines to throw a massive spanner in the works at some stage of this. They'll wait until the company has spent a fortune on the recruitment process and then block it.

I got a reply to say thanks but no thanks.
As above, it might be down to the algorithm or that I don't subscribe to looking after councilors who need to have the world stopped for them. Oh well.
Good luck to those who go on.

Any have any insight into the job itself? I'd imagine it would get very boring!

NBRU will be looking for new members so they might have to put up with it. Plenty will be retiring.

Excuse my ignorance but why would unions oppose this? What could they possibly have against new entrants?

You'd be fairly busy up front, if I had of made it to interview or next stage, then I would be heading to YouTube to find people vlogging that do the job in the UK or what not.

New members are probably more likely to join SIPTU than the NBRU I'd imagine. One of the reasons the NBRU are so virulently against the Go-Ahead bus routes is that they're a SIPTU closed shop (or as close to as is legal)

Prehaps, I think most drivers apart from DART are NBRU. Wasn’t aware of the Go-Ahead set up.

NBRU leadership should look at what they are doing so badly wrong because the current members will not last forever.

Be like the ESB, where you selected to be based, you'll go there. So you could technically have thousands applying for the depots in Dublin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭duffman3833

I applied last night to see and i was unhappy with the amount of personal detail they were looking for, especially my PPS no. I didn't want to give that out, especially only at the application stage, so i made up one. Got email this morning, i passed the first stage, onto the next one :)

They seem to be more focused on opposing things like bus connects than actually standing up for their members terms and conditions at the moment if their Twitter is anything to go by. I think they are more looking out for long serving members rather than newer members of staff or attracting new members.

Do you know if all the jobs are Dublin based or will some be spread out around the country?

Yep just gave it a bash there, the first test needs a bit of concentration, ran out of time on that one so not looking the bast for me! best of luck to all!

Waterford and Cork are good options because they are usually short drivers.

Don't worry about running out of time it's what you got right that counts

It’s more important you got all correct of what you attempted rather than all attempted and not all correct. Quality not quantity!!

They were general questions about ianrod eireann readily on the 'about us' section of the website. There's no way I'd know stuff like that off the top of my head. Someone asked one of the questions in this thread yesterday, about how many electrified lines ie operate, and someone gave an incorrect answer here in response to it.

The main questions were all judgement scenarios that you had to rank which decision you would make from 1-4.

Some of the questions were about the company that you would be hard pressed to know if you didn't look up the info. Don't understand the issue myself?

Well.. I agree, however from doing plenty of these tests. It depends on the test, if it's negatively marked it could change it.

I wrote two as the wiki states 2 lines. Im guessing most people did the same. I would not think these questions are important really though.

    DART Line 1
The southern portion of the existing DART line is to branch west after Connolly Station to run onto the Western Commuter line, which is to be electrified as far as Maynooth. The branch to Navan is also due to be electrified as far as Dunboyne, with the goal of increasing the frequency of services on these lines.[citation needed]

8329 at Howth in October 1985
    DART Line 2
The Northern portion of the DART line (North of Connolly Station) will be linked using the DART Underground to the Kildare line via Docklands station at Spencer Dock and Heuston Station. This strategic tunnel will link the DART directly with existing Luas light rail lines, hundreds of bus routes, planned Metro lines and extend the high frequency DART service to the Kildare commuter line. A DART service originating from the Northside (i.e. Howth) will divert to the Docklands and from there through a tunnel to Heuston station to continue service on the Kildare line. In April 2009, it was announced that an electrification project would extend the DART as far as Drogheda.[9] In February 2018 the Irish government announced a 10 year plan to electrify the lines to Drogheda, Maynooth, Hazelhatch, M3 Parkway and Docklands.[citation needed] Part of this plan also included ordering 200 New Emu DART coaches and building new stations. Irish rail are also planning on ordering 100 bi mode coaches to extend DART services before the lines are electrified and to run through the Phoenix park tunnel.

no need to comment on someone using common sense when it has helped them pass it

It was a straight up question about infrastructure, looking up the answer is the clever thing to do if you don't know an answer.

Also I did the stage 2 exam. That was tricky, takes an age to get through them. Go at them with a clear head and nothing to distract you.

    DART Line 2

Well see, what logic are they using here? Technically it's one electrified line as far as physics goes. I think they meant more so, they operate one service in Dublin Area (generally) and not another service in say Cork.

I'm also thinking there is a fair amount of weight placed on the questions 'select the best 3' and 'select the worst 3'
