Can a Visitor Leap card be used like a normal Leap card?

    Can a Visitor Leap card be used like a normal Leap card - for example, taken to Cork / Galway / Limerick / Waterford, loaded with some cash, and then used to purchase a day-saver ticket, or even just a regular fare?

    Only Visitor Leap passes can be loaded onto Visitor Leap card. Travel credit cannot be loaded so it is not possible to use it for anything else.

    Visitor Leap cards also expire after 1 year and cannot be used beyond this even if they have an unused ticket loaded.

    Yes you can use them as a non visitor, but it won't gain you anything financially unless you are:


    1. Using the 3 day option (the 1 and 7 day options are identical to Leap caps)
    2. You are using a lot of travel within that period


    Otherwise a regular leap is better value.


    You cannot load credit into it or use it outside Dublin, you can only load "periods" not money.


    The main difference with the regular Leap is when the day expires, if you put €10 on a regular leap and hit the all services cap you'll get unlimited until midnight that day, if you buy the €10 one day option on leap you'll get exactly 24 hours from the time yuo tag on, so could get two days

    Note that there would be issues with the deposit. A Visitor Leap Card doesn't have one.

    But cities other than Dublin don't have fare capping.

    Now that Day savers are only available on regular Leap, cards, is there any way for visitors to buy a leap card to use for a few days and then get the deposit back?

    My reading of it is there isn't a deposit, you pay ( for arguments sake ) €10 for a one day pass, that gives you unlimited travel for 24 hours on the relevant services.

    The other major difference is that Visitor Leap is valid on Airlink 747/748 routes where they are not included in the cap that matches the 1 day/ 7 day prices.

    Nitelink is not mentioned, not sure about that with a Visitor Leap.

    Another minor benefit of the visitor card is that anyone travelling without set destinations can hop on and of Rail and Luas without having to worry about making sure they tag on/off correctly or within the set maximum times as once activated the ticket is valid for it's full duration.

    There is no way to get a refund on a regular Leap other than registering a card and requesting a refund to a bank account within the SEPA area.

    The Visitor card is the only other leap product of use to short-term visitors and is not usable outside the Dublin region.

    The Visitor Leap card is issued and managed by Dublin Bus not Leap, why this is I don't know. It may only be an administrative arrangement as DB already had the set-up to produce disposable smartcards but either way if users have any issues with Visitor Leap cards they will have to refer to DB not Leap.
