Again I think this is the majority of expectancy from anyone I have discussed the game with

I made a comparison to this type of rabbid stuff that goes on when exclusive titles get released

Big huge holabaloo when Spider-man released an image about a puddle

Hmmm, I don't recall people showing pre-release footage of Spider man with poor shooting and combat mechanics, horrible texture pop-in and numerous glitches.

Best to be cautious rather than pimp this game based on Spider man puddles.

Free DLC kicks off in June. Not exactly DLC, just a new Survival difficulty and weekly challenges.

    https://blog.us.playstation.com/2019/04/24/days-gone-free-dlc-kicks-off-in-june/
‘Survival’ difficulty mode tests players by daring them to beat the story with increased difficulty settings, no fast travel or Survival Vision, and an immersive HUD that removes maps and indicators from the gameplay screen. Every tweak and change made is designed to further immerse players and ratchet up the tension to make this the definitive survival experience.

Each week beginning in June, a new Bike, Horde, or Combat challenge will be deployed to test players even further. These challenges take key gameplay features of Days Gone, and twists them in unique ways to earn additional items and rewards. We’ll give you more information on the specific challenges down the road.

Beating the Survival Difficulty and challenges won’t be in vain — players can earn new trophies and unique bike skins to show off in photo mode to prove they’re bonafide Days Gone survivors. Are you?

The one I watched he was playing on hard and one hit nearly had him dead.

What are the base game difficulty settings at the moment?

Easy, Medium, Hard. Survivor could have been added from the start but it didn't have a difficulty choice at one point so probably took them enough time to code the different settings, probably want to see how people find it before tweaking it to Survivor.

Hard, normal, easy and kotaku contributor.

    I actually don't know.

Excellent. My kind of difficulty :D

I did read that you can't change the difficulty if you start hard. No trophies linked to difficulty so strange decision.

Thought you like easy :pac: ;)

Wait until you've a few fast freakers chasing you, you've a scrap of health, two bullets and no petrol in your bike :pac:

Also your melee weapon can break :pac:

It took me the best part of a week to recover from playing TLOU on the hardest setting. Not the one that subsequently came with the DLC because f*** that.

  • I see gimli has joined the hype train...exxxxcellent

Survivor is quite possibly the best experience I've played on the remastered version.

I genuinely don't like harder game settings. The hardest one on the TLOU was brutal. It made it a completely different gaming experience and while ultimately it was a hugely rewarding experience the stress endured still makes me question if it was worth it.

I'm sure the DLC brought out an even more difficult setting. I think I stared into space for several minutes and then decided against it.

I loved my Survivor playthrough. Ground, that was released as DLC, as just....not fun. I got half way through and gave up. It became a speed run which I don't find fun.

Aaaaaaaaaand done with any other forums about this. A guy just posted an end game spoiler on Reddit. He then said he was kidding but I'm not taking any more chances.

1.04 patch released, Devs be grinding those fixes. No idea what it fixes but the reviews must all be done and waiting for 1pm Irish time to release. Hopefully the devs can give specifics.

First review out from Pure PlayStation

    8.7/10

    Summary as follows:

Days Gone is another notable addition to the PlayStation 4’s first party library. It follows the standard open world mold, but tells an intriguing story of a conflicted character and a unique survivalish-based zombie apocalypse. Gameplay is down to earth, gritty, and most of all fun while doing just enough differently to set it apart. Shame that multiple technical issues hold the game back regardless if they will be easily patched or not. But hey, I think I have an irrational fear that Freaker hordes will surround my house now.

    Pros

Unique zombie apocalypse story where things aren’t as they seem
Amazing character type and depth in the conflicted Deacon St. John
Gameplay mixed with survival and shooting elements ensures smarts will win in the end
    Beautiful open world

    Cons

Gun strafing is clunky and not an effective gameplay strategy
Just a few too many, minor technical issues

Lot of people on Reddit giving out about it being spoilerific so you might want to keep it in mind before reading it.

I just read the pros and cons at the end. They praise the story, character depth and gameplay mix but say there's a few too many minor technical issues and gun strafing is clunky.

There would be a serious caveat with that review in that they said they bought the game so they didn't have to worry about the embargo which is a bit of a head scratcher considering the game is only released tomorrow. I know some people had started getting their pre-orders in the past yesterday but it would hardly give you time to do a full campaign in that time.

6.5 from ign and 5 from GameSpot :pac: I had seen GameSpot's preview and they really really didn't like it from the off so wasn't expecting much but a 5 might be a bit harsh.

    Easy allies 7.5
    GamesRadar - 3.5/5
    Destructoid - 6
    Nextgenbase - 8.5
    Push Square - 7

    Currently 71 on metacritic

Not too promising from Eurogamer - 'A shallow copy of many better open-world action games'

7.1 at the moment from 45 reviews. Main gripe seems to be technical issues/bugs, if these are fixed with the pending updates then arguably actual score effectively closer to 8. Either way, looking forward to giving it a blast tomorrow & the weekend!

Dying Light is sitting at 74% on MC, lot of the big sites giving it a 70's rating and that was one of the best games I played this gen so not too worried.

Will see myself anyway if the missions get tedious and drawn out. Only thing that's worrying me is the story length, seems very long for this kind of game but I'll see how it goes.

    Yikes.

I am optimistic though. Give it a few months and there will be something here worthy of an 8/10.

I wouldn't rush out to get this one, time is the best healer.

I know its not getting reviewed "amazingly" in other reviews but i'd wonder how open a mind this person went in with when the review starts off with "From the moment I first heard about Days Gone, I wondered about its reason for existing."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,348 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

Yeah I'd almost be more willing to give it a go if it were a shorter game - something like The Order 1888 didn't review brilliantly but was a fun, short, quick blast that I really enjoyed. It hard to commit yourself to a big open world game that could take up 60 hours of your life if it's not a great game.

I thought The Order was pretty poor myself even with its short length

The game is great. It's like the last if us meets Dying light. I've spent the week with it and can't see any major technical issues bar an occasional jitter or daft AI. But no open world game gets this right. Its really hard to do. it gets so much right.

It looks amazing, the gameplay mechanic are great, the story and characters are great and the hordes are really well done.

I'm not finished it but a good 30-40 hours in and love every second of it. It's the first open world game that has me coming back for story not busy work.

The patch yesterday ramped it up and it's even better.

To be honest i knew those sites would give it a poor rating, after all the hero is a white man.

Is the aiming clunky/hard to be accurate? That'd be my biggest worry.

I found the whole beginning of that review extraordinarily patronising.

I think that was just the feeling of the majority of people. it was an unimpressive showed of yet another zombie open world game.

Not at all. You can change the sensitivity, you can even add aim snapping in the settings. But in most cases you take your time and pick your shots. If you hold down the trigger the gun bounces around, but even then there are skills to unlock to reduce the recoil.

Eurogamer reviews aren't worth the eye muscle use needed to read them anymore. Let me guess, it didn't score enough "woke" points for them? Not enough minorities?

Reviews just aren't good for this at all. Metro gamecentral said it's very uninspired and the story is generic. Mike Williams at Eurogamer who loves these triple A open world games said the same and gave it a 3.5/5 which I'm surprised at as he usually reviews stuff like ubisoft open world games on the high end.
