Artificial pigmentation of your skin

Looking at
https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-have-discovered-a-chemical-that-causes-any-skin-type-to-tan (which I read)
brought me to
https://www.cell.com/cell-reports/fulltext/S2211-1247(17)30684-8 (which I skimmed, but stopped when it got really scientific).

As someone who doesn't tan well, this interests me. I note it's from a year ago, and wondering if anyone here has read about it? My field isn't biology, so although hopeful, I realise that it'll probably be a while before this is available for the public (although it'll probably be costly).

So I'm wondering; is this a load of nonsense, or would this be able to be done? Seems the delay is that human skin is tougher than rodent skin, bu I wonder if they have progressed to human trials yet?

I could be misreading it but it looks like they are taking the idea of working around the gene issues and boosting production through another pathway.

It certainly looks plausible but I imagine it is 10 years away at least as it looks like early stage research, so they will have to go through all the other phases if this looks promising.
