Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    you shouldbe able to look up your councils rent rates on the council site

    It should indeed be possible to look up the method of calculation of each Council's Differential Scheme on their websites but many Councils are not including them on their sites and some who do include them are woefully out of date. Apparently there are as many variations in the calculations used as there are Councils. You do, however, have the right to ask the relevant Council for it in writing.

    i looked it up it shows the percentage of income but not the disregard that are allowed on some incomes .going by my councils rate id be paying more now than when i lived with my husband ,now with a lesser income than what was our joint income,so im assuming there must be some income disregards ,wanted an idea what to expect ,,

    It's really a simple case of the more you earn or means you have the more you have to pay .
    It's not rent supplement , it's differential rents

    (a) children’s allowances, orphan’s allowances or orphan’s pensions payable under the Social Welfare (Consolidation) Act 1981;
    (b) scholarships and Higher Education Grants;
    (c) allowances payable under the Boarding Out of Children Regulations 1954;
    (d) allowances for domiciliary care of handicapped children under the Health Act, 1970;
    (e) lump sum compensation payments;

    these are the only forms of income that are disregarded for council rents

    Children’s allowances, orphan’s allowances or orphan’s pensions payable under the Social Welfare (Consolidation) Act 1981.
    Scholarships and Higher Education Grants
    Allowances payable under the Boarding Out of Children Regulations 1954.
    Allowances or assistance received from any charitable organisation.
    Allowances for domiciliary care of handicapped children under the Health Act, 1970.
    Lump sum compensation payments.
    Infectious diseases maintenance allowance.
    Social Welfare extra increase for people aged 80 or over.
    Social Welfare Living Alone Allowance.
    Social Welfare Fuel Allowance and Smokeless Fuel Allowance
    Social Welfare Telephone Support Allowance
    Deduction of a court ordered maintenance payment subject to production of satisfactory proof of the deduction.
    That amount in excess of the reference rate (basic social welfare rate) of payments made by the Department of Social Protection in respect of- Carer’s Allowance, National Internship Scheme, Tus Scheme, Rural Social Scheme, Community Employment Scheme, Youthreach training allowance, Foster care allowance

    And in respect of cork city council this is how they calc the rent

    The rents of dwellings let on Differential Rent will be determined on the basis of the following scales of assessable income as shown hereunder:

    Each person will have a standard weekly allowance of €39.00 or €54.00 where there is a dependent adult not in receipt of or entitled to an income.
    €20.00 will be allowed for each dependent child until they reach the age of eighteen years or until they reach the age of twenty two years if they continue to receive full time education.
    15% of the balance will be assessable for rent.
    In the case of income derived from employment the same allowances will apply to income, exclusive of statutory deductions of income tax, Universal Social Charge, PRSI, pension levy and pension contributions. 15% of the remaining income will be calculated for rent.
    An allowance of €44.40 will apply to subsidiary earner incomes after statutory deductions of income tax, Universal Social Charge, PRSI, pension levy, and pension contributions have been deducted. 15% of the balance will be calculated and will be added as rent, subject to a maximum contribution of €23.80 per subsidiary earner.

    Cork City Council may, where circumstances warrant it, make appropriate adjustments at the marginal points of the scale when calculating rents.

    Really odd you can get tens of thousands in a claim any yet its not considered means ,
    Earn a e100 working part time and you face a rent increase

    so they dont disregard an amount of an extra income, based on where that income comes from as such, but they do put weekly allowances that they take from the assessable income, before calculaating the rent

    ok i think i understand it now ..i was going on how rent supplement was calculated and income from rehabilitive work was disregarded ,up to 120,,,looks like im going to owe a big chunk back
