Bird deterrent ideas?

    Hi folks.

    Any recommendations for deterring Bird's from a certain area of the house as I have a huge oak tree that Birds congregate on then poo all over the walls underneath!

    I love having Birds around but I spent ages washing and painting last week and it's back to square one again.

    Magpies mostly and a few Swallows.

    A scarecrow, or banger, works for Magpies. Swallows seldom roost in trees.

    One of the threads on here had someone with a magpie 'pet' in a cage on a porch. Apparently the presence of a magpie keeps others away. If you drive one pair away (they always seem to be in pairs around here), others move in. Supposedly their presence keeps the crows away, though I've not seen it in west kerry - get the pair of magpies, and then the crows show up. Crows are useless feckers.

    If within Bluetooth range, you could try having a Bluetooth speaker playing bird of prey sounds from Youtube. Works well with gulls in my area.

    The normal ones don't work on birds - Only specialised professional units are suitable for birds. Plus you'd scare off all the birds in the area.


    Hardly the role of a nature thread to advocate any means that would deter all wildlife from an area.

    Seems like the magpie in question was injured, couldn't fly, etc. Owner kept it for years as a pet. Agreed, not practical. The theory that one pair of magpies keeps others away was all I was actually interested in promoting.

    i would supect that regardless, it'd attract rather than deter magpies. they're social animals AFAIK.

    Was thinking this myself.
    Have 3 jackdaw nests in the roof and a nest of starlings.swallows in the shed next door.Delighted and flattered to have them,noisy though they are.

    Of course it would. They even use trapped Magpies as a lure to attract others for shooting.

    This is, but there have been several others looking to deter birds, removing or preventing nests, and eradicating singing birds. All in all, as many threads on preventing as attracting wildlife.
