Hawkshaw is definitely worth some more time at out half. We don't see how well he trains there, but I feel like the coaching team didn't want to back him there at the start of last season. If we had a second out half they trusted Jack would have come back from injury more slowly - he wasn't ready for first team rugby at the time. It was a long time ago in a misfiring team but my memories are of his place kicking being unreliable and his tactical decision making needing a lot of work. Maybe a full season with the squad and a pre-season this Summer to work on elements of his game might change that.

Cathal Forde looks like he'll be a brilliant centre if he keeps developing. I'd be very wary of moving him anywhere just for the sake of the team. Let him focus on becoming a nailed on starter at 12 unless there's a fit and motivated Bundee in the team ahead of him. Irrespectrive of issues inside the squad we won't see much of Bundee on the pitch between the 6N, warm up games, and World Cup.

Gavin could play anywhere from 11-15. He's an excellent athlete, especially considering he's only just turned 19 and came through the youths system and therefore would have had less access to high level S&C coaching.

Agreed, always wary of shoehorning an excellent player into being an average 10, see Carbery, J. Just think that Forde is a bit more controlled than Hawkshaw and also younger so has more time to (re)adapt to the position.

If Cathal Forde want to play 10 and the incoming coaching team think he's got the potential then I'd happily see him have a proper go at it once his place kicking is where it needs to be. I'd just hate to see him bouncing around between 10, 12, and most likely 15 rather then developing faster in one role.

Between the jes, wegians and being in Connacht age grade teams since he was 15/16 he would have got quite lot high level S&C coaching. Also isn't his dad a former pro player so could give bit advice in that area as well? Don't think he'd got much less s&c compared to many others when take those into account.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,450 ✭✭✭Wegians89

There is a significant difference in Connacht schools and Leinster school S&C. Connscht schools would be next to none. Most schools don’t have weight lifting rooms

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,450 ✭✭✭Wegians89

Bundee to Munster rumours dead now surely

  • Registered Users Posts: 333 ✭✭ShineyShiney

15: I don't believe we have a 15 of the quality required or of the potential in the near future in our current squad. Sorry but McNulty looks way off for me and toh while better last 3 games doesn't have it as a starter except as a back up.

13: Tom Farrell is top end, behind him we are very limited.

8: Drop off from boyle is too great, SHL has been hard working but looks too small while Butler is having an excellent season he's far more a flanker.

    Happy to back youth at 9, 10 & 2

For my money I'd back Hawkshaw at 10

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

I know but Between all of the set ups he's involved in he would get equivalent of what many of the schools get in terms of S&C.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,542 ✭✭✭FACECUTTR

Some people are keeping it alive even though Friend said he wasn't going anywhere.

I'd be shocked (and disappointed for Connacht) if he moved to Munster.

Whatever issues there are between him and Connacht can be ironed out, especially with a new coaching team coming on board.

He's been a great signing for Connacht and if he's staying in Ireland I hope he stays at Connacht.

    Three certainties in life

    Taxes

Bundee to Munster rumours that go nowhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,240 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

Connolly motors kept him here with a speed van's dream

  • Registered Users Posts: 214 ✭✭kita99

I don't oppse about Aki' s leaving to Munster. In this season, He looked apparently has been down in speed into the support play. Also he look at only Ireland not Conncht.(this may be my false suspition) On the other hand, Munster desperately needs good ceter. R.Scanell and Goggin are good but excellent and C. Farrel' futuer is unknown,so it hires Alex Nankivell(Maori AB) who fought against Ireland last summer without any impressiion except some handling errors. So Munster want experieced ctb. If they want some mutual trade for him, Connacht accept it with getting approriate player (for example,M.Harey or S.Daly or some younger prospects). This is business to future.

On the craggy pod the referred to Buckleys contract extension until 2025.....did I miss that news? Can't see it on their website or socials.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Munster have signed Alex Nankivell, which (hopefully) means that Bundee is not heading south. Your point about his on pitch performance is fair, but Bundee is the cultural heartbeat of Connacht rugby. We need him, but also need him to be fully invested and supportive of the new coaching staff.

Bit like Bundee I don't think they officially announced it yet but imagine its true seeing as they were chatting to Buckley in the press conference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,240 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

They've a good few extensions to hold off on announcing until season ticket renewals start

  • Registered Users Posts: 64 ✭✭tintedgreenglasses2016

Very much believe we can make URC quarter finals. Connacht is such a better team that started out this season so I'm really hopeful we can do really well. Some of our more experienced players have really stood up this year and some exciting new talent is very obvious

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

5 games left and I reckon Connacht should be targeting 4 wins.

Wins against Zebre Dragons Edinburgh and Cardiff should hopefully leave Connacht not needing anything away to Glasgow in the final round to sneak top 8.

It's worth noting that top 7 will be needed for European qualification (no Welsh team in top 8) and that might be a step too far.

Munsters last three games are at home to Glasgow and two games down in South Africa against the sharks and stormers with another trip to South Africa in there with champions cup.

Ulster have Sharks and Cardiff away and Bulls, Dragons and Edinburgh at home and with the form they’re in could see them lose 3 or 4 of those.

I expect Ulster to win their 3 remaining home games and lose 2 away games.

    Tv coverage is desperate

BP after 32 minutes for Connacht. Absolutely gorgeous try from a quick throw in to secure it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,240 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

Lads what has happened to TOH? He's had a fantastic season after about 4 poor years back to back. Fair **** to him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭Shehal

Connacht managed to score an even more beautiful try than their BP try!

13-31 to Connacht with 1 minutes until half time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,240 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

Conceded a woeful try but bounced back almost immediately. A very professional half. DTM has been clinical with a hat-trick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,143 ✭✭✭OldRio

Bonus point wrapped up well before half time.

The most interesting thing to take out of that half was that you can do a food tour as part of your match day experience. Sounds rather wonderful.

Nice DDT on Oliver there. Jake the Snake would be proud.

Poor defending, this game is not over yet.

Even by Connacht standards this is a pretty spectacular collapse!

    This is worse than Brive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

They managed to put a gloss on the scoreline with a couple of more tries. 52-34 with 2 minutes left.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,233 ✭✭✭ClanofLams

Like a lot of Connacht’s weaker areas, restarts have been a problem for about five years now. Have to wonder what exactly is being coached.

  • Registered Users Posts: 64 ✭✭tintedgreenglasses2016

It was a very weak performance but I think it's good to have one of those from time to time. You get the result and learn from it at the same time. I doubt we will as rubbish (or at least I hope so) in our next game

  • Registered Users Posts: 64 ✭✭tintedgreenglasses2016

Again TOH and JB have been our best players. Where have they been?

  • Registered Users Posts: 214 ✭✭kita99

If connacht continue this defence, they'll be looser against Glasgow, Edinburgh, and even Cardiff. That's Terrible. No one was evaluated by this match because Zebre was too weak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,240 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

That was a massive bit of fortune that we weren't playing a full strength side (who lost every match so far this season). We benefitted under Friend from not having good South African sides and also had a huge stroke of fortune reaching our first Champions Cup knockouts despite losing 75% of our pool games.

A fresh pair of eyes could do wonders for this team. We have one of our best ever group of players and they're better than these embarrassing defeats away to Newcastle. There's very few professional sides that you still wouldn't have full confidence in closing out a win if they were 18 points plus to the good.

Once again Niall Murray refused to be sucked into the panic and led like a forward with a decade more experience than he has. You could tell every head dropped bar his during that meltdown.

  • Registered Users Posts: 225 ✭✭AccidentallyOnside

OK....so the following teams I don't think we can catch or pass:

    Ulster

    Munster

    Leinster

    Glasgow

    Stormers

    Sharks

    Bulls

Only thing that could let us in is a Bulls or Munster collapse but I don't think either will realistically happen.

That means we're fighting for 8th with Cardiff and Edinburgh. If we win the two games against those two teams that should be enough. Both games at home so team should be really up for them!!

Downside is HC for next years looks very very unlikely :(

Edit: looking more closely I can't see Edinburgh winning too many more and Cardiff could win all their remaining games. Still means we will need to beat both with a few bonus points thrown in along the way..

Sure but the problem is Connacht don’t learn. Restarts have been an issue for years. Conceded seven from one in the first half today, no adjustments at half time, conceded another seven in the second half and very fortunate it wasn’t 14.

The same issues remaining for years is a shocking indictment on the coaching staff.

A really poor performance today. A better team would have secured their restarts, kept a solid defensive line, and won convincingly by getting the ball into their 22 and preying on their weaknesses.

That said, this is one of those dodgy away games that most teams have somewhere in a season. A lot of lads will have heard the good/bad news of renewal offers this week. I'd be fine with a stinker of a game if it wasn't from a season that already has a list of them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 398 ✭✭Tommybojangles

Absolute pile that was. Friend has been overseeing the same weaknesses for years now, can't leave soon enough. We have far too much quality in our ranks to be serving up this s****.

How many leads have we given up I'm the last few years and did our best to do it today, Zebre just happened to be even worse than us

  • Registered Users Posts: 64 ✭✭tintedgreenglasses2016

Does it mean Connacht have to get 6th if neither Welsh or Italian teams finish within the top 8 for them to have Champions rugby next year?

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,836 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

No. The Italians are in a combined shield with the scots, so Glasgow will take that shields place

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

There is 4 shields in the competition. The shield is a group of 4 teams, at least one of which will qualify for the champions cup. The shields are

    4 Irish teams

    4 South African teams

    4 Welsh teams

2 Scottish and 2 Italian teams

If Leinster win the Irish Shield (as they have almost already done), and then all three of Leinster, Ulster & Munster qualify for Europe via the URC, and one of the three then win the European Cup, would the Irish Shield place go to Connacht?

No. I checked the URC competition rules for this earlier this year. It remains on the basis of league position. The qualification rules are based on the four geographic pool winners and the four other highest placed teams. The URC, Champions Cup, and Challenge Cup winners only modify the qualification list if those winners haven't already qualified.

Except Friend isn't the day to day coach, and realistically the players can deliver in training and then stink the place out on the pitch regardless who is the coach. My issue is the Captaincy, there' a real lack of leadership out there. No-one with the consistent performance level or authority that Mul had, or a Craig Clarke. But someone needs to take on the role from Jack, and they need to be in the pack..

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,542 ✭✭✭FACECUTTR

The team leadership has been an issue since Mul left. Butler is excellent at speaking to referees but to me he doesn't inspire the players around him. Boyle should get another crack at it In my opinion. A Craig Clarke type signing would be fantastic. But would it happen ? Has Joe Joyce much leadership experience with Bristol?

  • Registered Users Posts: 45 Sea_point

Joyce Captained a Bristol squad in friendly v SA A, don't hitnk he has any experience outside that. Has missed half the season so far with injury.

I'm a bit concerned by him as a signing frankly.

Signing announced way too early for a player of questionable quality, I'm not convinced he is the player that suits our game or will bring it to a different level.

I don't think he's a step up from Fifita, and a couple of steps behind Roux that left Connacht...
