Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Fun fact. Nunavut is bigger than France, Italy, Germany and UK combined. Not had for a place I never heard of.

    Thanks Mack

I think it's the fourth largest province/territory in the world after a couple of Russia ones and Western Australia.

Only slightly smaller than Mexico. Population of Mexico c. 130m. Population of Nunavut c. 36,000.

If it was it’s own country it would be the 15th biggest in the world, according to Wiki.

Anyway I’ve a couple more tournies in mind. There’s some really interesting German state ones, English counties and I’m sure plenty more. I’m also open to the idea of doing football crests in some capacity, perhaps on a nominations basis. Any thoughts are welcome.

There’s also Cartoon Wars 3 to do as well.

It's a really interesting place and it has really spurred me to read about some of the states and territories. You have done a great job running these, thanks.

Football crests would be a good laugh. Tribal though. Maybe have to exclude EPL ones.

That's grand, as long as it happens before the start of next season I'll be able to nominate Leeds so. :D

Sorta related, but Sean Moncrief has an interesting guy on now talking about why Washington DC isn't a state. Probably available on playback for anyone interested.

I think I posted something similar at the end of the flags of the world thread but a tournament of non sovereign territories of the world would be great. Would bring up some unusual and forgotten locations and bound to be a few cracking flags in there too.

The Travellers Century Club keep a list of 329 territories around the world that they consider to be independent or have some form of autonomy. If you subtract the 195 or so nations of the world that we have previously covered from that list that would leave 130ish non sovereign territories for a competition.

I’ve taken loads of these posts into consideration. I think there’s scope to do one at least one tournament a month for a year off the top of my head if enough folks want it.

Would love it to be honest. These 2 flag competitions have been very enjoyable and as other posters already said it has been very educational too.

European football crests would be a good one (take out PL or even just all English teams to reduce tribal nonsense)

One of the side benefits is that it brings my posting average up from 0.1/0.2 per day. Now that third shiny blue star is in sight. :)

    Would it work with videos?

Thinking top World Cup goals or best Ireland goal - something like that.

    Good stuff!

Definitely throw it open to nominations cos there'll be some random belters that people will have forgotten, except for that one pure nerd whose time is about to be at hand :)

Nah. Like the tricolour in the flags tournament, patriotism would only get it so far, and too far at that.

Compare it to Dario Rodriguez, Lucio, Maradona (v Belgium and England), Rats, James Rodriguez - it doesn't compare.

Maybe we could do a misjudged sarcastic quote competition.

    ;)

    * agree 100% btw cdeb.

You didn't type it in the sarcastic font though! :)

(Now Whelan's goal at Euro 88 does get criminally overlooked because of van Basten - that'd be a different matter)

Thanks for all the work Omackeral.

Although you may have to re-run this competition in the not-too-distant future:

Mississippi lawmakers drafting resolution to take Confederate emblem off state flag

    :pac:

    Official now:

    https://mississippitoday.org/2020/06/28/mississippi-furls-state-flag-with-confederate-emblem-after-126-years/

Lawmakers voted on Sunday to remove the Mississippi state flag, the last in the nation featuring the Confederate battle emblem, more than 126 years after it was adopted.

The House and Senate passed a bill on Sunday that will immediately remove the state flag, and Gov. Tate Reeves said he would sign the bill into law. A nine-person commission will be appointed to develop a single new design by September, and Mississippi voters will approve or reject that design on the November 2020 ballot. In the meantime, Mississippi will have no official state flag.

Let's see if this new design commission can come up with something to knock Nunavut and New Mexico out of the park; if they're following the football crest thread, sticking loads of animals on it would appear to be a good strategy! :D

Thanks for the cheap plug! Follow that here folks. If you like the flag tournaments, you'll like this. Exact same concept. No need for sports knowledge, just need to like colours and shapes!

Without the confederate flag it would look like Yugoslavia :D
