    I've been looking at the vrt thread on the motors section, what are the rules for re-registering a classic car bought in the uk.
    i take it the rules are similar!

    the car is a 1973 hillman imp super (875cc) it was bought last summer and i'm hoping to put it back on the road by mid this summer.
    It has a current uk MOT.
    Does it have to have a new style number plate? eg 73-D-xxxxx

    The car will be zero rated for VRT alright, though I think there's a nominal fee you have to pay to "register" anyway (maybe 40/50 euro).

    I'm also interested in knowing about the plate type for a car newly registered in the country... ;)

    When a classic/vintage vehicle - 30 yrs or older - is imported, the payment to register it is €50. No VRT or VAT is payable.

    When you register the car you have the option of -

    A. Being issued with a 'year' reg (in your case 73-D-_____), or

    B. Requesting a 'Vintage' reg for your car, which consists of the letters 'ZV' followed by serial number of up to five digits e.g. ZV 89630.

    (See pic below of 'ZV' reg. P.S. don't fit plates like those in the pic, fit plates with large 'old style' digits which look the part on older cars !)

    N.B. - Unless you specifically request a 'Vintage' reg, you will automatically be issued with a 'year' reg.

    (Having said that, if you do decide that you actally want a 'year' reg, you have the option of changing to a 'ZV' reg at a later date. N.B.- It doesn't work the other way, i.e swopping 'ZV' reg for 'year' reg).


    Road Tax on a vintage vehicle is c.€40 per year (depending on your county,it can vary by approx €5).

    A few notes to remember...


    1) make sure that you get the full V5 form from the UK owner or else you need to get a 'Cert of Permanent Export' for the DVLA in the UK.

    2) ensure that you can find and point to the chassis no/engine no from the V5 on the car. Depending on 'who' you get on the day, the VIn plate on the car may no be enough, they may need to see the stamped into the body number somewhere.

    3) spend some time with them to make sure that they regsiter it as the correct variant (e.g GT or super or coupe)

    Once the paperwork is correct, it only takes about 10mins (and 50euro) to get the number (reg docs come in the post later).

    The revenue give you the first tax form which you can take to the tax office to get the tax disk.

    Finally, you need new number plates....I get mine from the UK (www.vintageplates.co.uk) but there are suplliers locally. See some of the other threads.

    Yes make sure your chassis number tallies with your paperwork or else it gets really complicated. Everyone always says you have to know where the chassis number is at the vro. When I was there a guy had an Audi, and he had no idea where the number was. But the people at the vro spent ages looking with him untill they found it. Though i guess it could depend on the person you get.

    Great info everyone!

    Q: When you choose between the two types of plate - can you also request a particular number to follow either ZV or 7X D...?

    I know you can reserve a number for a new car for €315, but do they charge you for a reqested number if the car is there and ready to be registered?

    And what happens when you get assigned a number plate - do they give you a standard one or do you have to go off and get one made?

    To my knowledge, you cannot pick a reg number for a classic ........ you will be assigned the next available number in the relevant sequence.

    You have to get your own plates made up.
