The Copa America begins in just over 24 hours with host nation and competition favourites Brazil taking on Bolivia at 01:30am Irish time. Eir Sport/Premier Sports have the official rights to show all 26 matches live in Ireland and the UK.

Japan and Qatar have accepted invitations to participate, while there's no representatives from CONCACAF this time. It will also be the last time the tournament is held in an odd year as from 2020 it will be coordinated just like the Euros.

    Groups:
Group A: Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Peru.

Group B: Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Qatar.

Group C: Uruguay, Ecuador, Japan, Chile.

The top two teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals, alongside the two best third-placed teams.

Brazil (evens) were dealt a blow losing Neymar to injury in a pre-tournament friendly but they remain the favourites according to the bookies; they do look like they have the most well-balanced squad. Argentina (7/2) are the next-best fancied team as Messi looks to win his first major trophy for his national team besides his Olympic Gold medal from '08. Much like the World Cup though questions remain about Argentina's defensive capabilities. Uruguay (6/1) look a decent shout with a solid spine and impressive firepower up top; bookies have them third-favourites. Colombia (17/2) are deemed the fourth-best prospect and while they've tended to rely on Falcao in previous tournaments, now they have Duvan Zapata coming off a lethal season in Serie A with Atalanta and in the form of his life. Could they be the team to beat? Previous winners Chile (14/1) are deemed the 5th best option by the bookies; they look a rather aging outfit at this point.

After that we have the outside bets like Peru (25/1), Paraguay (30/1), Venezuela (40/1) and Ecuador (50/1); as well as the teams considered the whipping boys like Japan (70/1), Qatar (100/1) and Bolivia (100/1). Might one of these teams prove a surprise package? Japan gave a good account of themselves at last year's World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals by beating Colombia along the way; and Qatar surprised many by becoming the Asian Cup champions.

Whatever happens there will plenty of familiar names on show: Messi, Aguero, Firmino, Coutinho, Suarez, Cavani, Zapata, Rondon to name but a few, and there's a very tasty encounter on Saturday evening from 11pm as Argentina take on Colombia.

What team do you reckon will take the crown? I'm thinking a Brazil vs Uruguay final and would fancy the hosts to just about edge it.

    Yessss Copa America.

Big Argentina fan so I would hope they'd do it but they've been letting me down for so long.

Would probably say Uruguay and Brazil in the final (if they can meet in the final, haven't really looked at the group structures.)

Is there a possibility of Qatar getting battered in all three games without scoring?

Is there a possibility that Qatar pay off everyone to win it?

Japan are sending a young side that will be similar to the side they use at the Olympics in Tokyo next year. They've called up mostly 17-22 year old prospects in addition to a few overage players like their regular keeper and Okazaki up front. Only 6 in the squad have senior caps.

Their young player to watch would probably be Tatsuya Ito, although I can't say I know a lot about the other youngsters.

That's a disgrace. They shouldn't have been invited if they weren't sending their best team.

USA and Mexico should be in it not Japan or Qatar. Obviously money behind Qatar's presence.

I don't know about the US, but Mexico would likely have taken part if it weren't for the Gold Cup which starts tomorrow.

The hope was for 16 teams to take part.

Qatar and Japan are in as the Asian Cup finalists.

Nobody else worthwhile was available from other confederations.

They talked about this a wee bit on the Guardian podcast - the timing for other nations just worked out horribly. They wanted some heavy hitter European teams, but none were interested due to timing of the nations league stuff, and the qualifiers. Taking part in this right afterwards would leave little off-season time for their players, especially when there's no real merit to bothering with this tournament halfway across the world.

The central American sides like Panama, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, etc, and the North American sides, like the US, Mexico, and Canada all already have the Gold Cup, and the bigger African teams already have the African Nations. So they were pretty limited in who they could approach to round out the numbers.

Teams for the opener, kicking off in thirty minutes or so:
Brazil XI: Alisson; D. Alves, T. Silva, Marquinhos, F. Luis; Fernandinho, Casemiro, Coutinho; Richarlison, Firmino, Neres.

Bolivia XI: Lampe; D.Bejarano, Haquin, Jusino, M.Bejarano; Justiniano, Raul Castro, Saavedra, F.Saucedo; A.Chumacero, Marcelo Moreno.

Looks a strong Brazil side, though I think Fabinho being overlooked is criminal as he should definitely be in the squad at least. Bolivia's team mostly play in their domestic league. They've scored just 2 goals in their last 6 games and haven't won a match since last October. Don't see that changing today. Should be a comfortable win for Brazil.

Half-Time: 0-0 at the break. Jeers from the home fans at what they're seeing. Brazil started well and it looked like it was only a matter of time before they went in front but they've been lacking quality in the final third.

1-0 Brazil from the spot. Coutinho converts following a handball. Time to call it a night as I can't see Bolivia making a contest of it.

And as I write that Coutinho adds a second via a header. Game over.

Venezuela might be a surprise package at this tournament. Some good young players and have been impressive in recent friendlies

Keep an eye on Takefusa Kubo too. Dubbed the ‘Japanese Messi’, only 18 but wanted by Man City, PSG & Real. Spent a couple years in the Barca academy too but back in Japan the last year or so

    Signed for Real yesterday.

I think every country has had their Messi had this stage. The one constant is that it's a very naive statement to make & is said far too often.

Goalless draw between Venezuela and Peru. I had it on in the background but it didn't look too exciting. Picked up near the end when Venezuela went down to ten. Peru missed good chances to win it.

Argentina vs Colombia coming up at 11. I think the Copa needs this to be a good one. Team news:
Argentina XI: Armani; Saravia, Pezzella, Otamendi, Tagliafico; Lo Celso, Guido Rodriguez, Paredes; Messi, Aguero, Di Maria.

Colombia XI: Ospina; Medina, Yerry Mina, Davinson Sanchez, Tesillo; Cuadrado, Uribe, Barrios; James, Falcao, Muriel.

Would have liked to see Zapata start for Colombia but both sides have tasty attacks. Hopefully a few goals in this.

Argentina with a lot of long balls so far. Bypassing their own midfield as if it's Ireland under Trap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Not a lot happening so far. Argentina almost playing themselves into trouble the only interesting bit. Both sides look cagey.

    ZAPATAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

He started the move as well. Surely starts the next game now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭ERG89

Doesn't really take much to get into the Argentine team these days. I don't know is the shirt too heavy or they just don't care under this manager but most of them were very poor.

    ZAPATAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Colombia play Qatar next so maybe get him in for that game, he has had an incredible season.

    Argentina toothless

Feel sorry for Messi with the criticism he'll get if this tournament doesn't go well. Outside of the impressive attacking options I really don't think Argentina have the solidity to compete with the best. Think Foyth and Ascacibar in the XI would help but don't think it would be enough. I would fancy Brazil to beat them pretty handily if they meet one another.

    Magical Messi

I see Qatar managed a 2-2 draw with Paraguay earlier having been 2-0 down.

Uruguay vs Ecuador kicks off at 11pm. Teams:
Uruguay XI: Muslera; Caceres, Godin, Gimenez, Laxalt; Vecino, Nandez, Bentancur, Lodeiro; Suarez, Cavani.

Ecuador XI: Dominguez; Quintero, Mina, Achilier, Caicedo; Intriago, Orejuela; Antonio Valencia, Mena, Preciado; Enner Valencia.

I like the look of Uruguay's team. Their defensive and striking partnerships are something. Surprised Antonio Valencia is still a starter for Ecuador. Fancy a solid Uruguay win.

    wtf happened there

yellow card for a foul, var for ages, yellow rescinded turned turned to a red

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Don't feel that should have been a red. This could get ugly for Ecuador now.

    3-0 suarez

Suarez gets in on the act. 3-0.

watched the red a few more times, and it's exactly the kind of shíthousery VAR was probably introduced to cut out of the game.

The defender meant to lead with the forearm/elbow and a red is the right decision imo
