Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hoping to get away for a few days but nothing set in stone yet. Have nine bloody weddings and am on top of my head with work so it's hard to organise anything too definite. Herself is finished maternity leave in the next few weeks and is pretty pissed we haven't gone yet.

I was not going to go away as I travel a fair bit with work. England fairly of then Eastern Poland twice this year and going to France for 4 days but I'll get 2 days hols out of that. But I was just informed I got a free trip to Mississippi later in the year.... it'd be rude to decline.

Not going anywhere again this year. Youngest passed his second year uni exams :) and I need the money to help him with fees etc.
I will spend time in the boat fishing (with the 3 dogs) on the wonderful lakes of Longford and Cavan. That will be my holiday, peace and quiet and hopefully warm sunny evening.

Was skiing back in March for a week, planning a week in Spain in August, stag in 2wks time, and prb a discussion group trip somewhere also. I got an itch to go further afield in the future definitely though, Now that the farm up and running properly, and while my dad still active would be the time I guess. Would love to go for a Nuffield some year, done a volunteering trip to Haiti before, defo need to do the likes of that again, but escaping from the farm for more than 10days would be very tough as I'd have to leave too much laid out for my replacement. I guess that's actually the main reason I want to get to the likes of 120+ cows, so I can afford to hire good staff for likes of this.

Unfortunetly no. Haven't had a holidaynor day off since I gave up driving for a haulage company 4 years ago, milking 365.

I know some will say "can you not get someone into milk for a few days" well the answer to that is no, this place is in such bad shape that its a combination of embarrassement and saftey.

The auld fella didn't believe in spending money on the farm, preferred leaving itin the local pubs. 28 cows on 97 acres 4 years ago and some fields not ploughedfor over 30 years, so you can imagine the set up.

Herself and the 3year old go on a week or so holidays every may with her folks. I just stay behind.

Fair play to you. Inspiring stuff when a lad turns a farm back from the brink. Best of luck with it.

    my parents did similar.
One thing I will say is my parents spent so much time in grossed in work and trying to work out how they could make there money go further they never took a holiday..They regret it niw I think
a break/holiday is the best thing for a business and the mind to.
Honestly. Take a break. It will do wonders for yourself your family and your business. You'll come back with a fresh head. Even if it's only 2 days away at the weekend

Most of us have been there at some stage, 1st year or so here full time I never could escape. I remember the very 1st time I went skiing 2 yrs ago, I was under so much pressure on the farm leading up to the holiday that I genuinely was going to cancel it afew times, but when I got away it was totally worth it, one of the best holidays I had ever had, and the farm didn't actually crumble like I thought it would ha, afew minor issues which are impossible to avoid, but all in all it got me in the habit of regularly taking holidays regardless of what state the farm was in, and without me feeling guilty about it all.

I know if I look back in 5 years time that without me taking the holidays (a week will cost at least 2k between the holiday and hiring milkers, and any problems while I'm gone), I could probably progress the farm quicker, but life is so much more than just farming for me, I'd go crazy without other outlets.

Heading away to Barcelona at the end of the month for a week with the OH and kids, first time away from here for longer than 3 days since the honeymoon 16 years ago:o

The only reason we're going is the second lad has a soccer tournament there for 4 days and we got a week for all of us for less than the 4 days of the soccer clubs package.

We're not big fans of sun holidays though, we would prefer going somewhere with something to do rather than sit on a beach each day.

Great post Tim, we've all been in similar situations. Didn't have a proper holiday here til I was 26, and I was bricking it telling my dad I was going (that was all in my head in hindsight). Don't get too caught up about the cost of labour when ur on holiday either, remember the farm is still making money when ur away.

Ahh Deep, it's not meant to make anyone else but me sad!!!, look it's life and it's the hand I was dealt so I may play. There are lots of folk out there and even probably on here that have it worse than I do,

A neighbour told me last year that I 'should take a break with the family' (OH and 1 child), that's all well and good but when you are fooling around with 40/50 cows and keeping 2 houses going (father does NOTHING now, I mean, wouldn't even stand on the road when I go for the cows) and the place in a mess (very little pathways, fields not reseeded regularly back all those years ago and most importantly, not a penny in the bank), I mean how many more of you dairy men get to about the 30th of the month after paying a few quid from bills only to pray the 17th comes quicker this month!! haha.

Sorry went off track there, back to neighbour. It's easier for a guy with 120+ cows to say that since maybe he's getting 3xtimes the creamery cheque I am, yes I know he has bigger expenses etc... but it would be easier from him to cream maybe 2/3 grand from a 28000 milk check and still be ok than for me to remove 1000 from an 8 grand check.

Ohh Christ, this should be in the depression thread.

    I agree...
I've no idea what sort of milk cheques there are from even a poor 40/50 cow herd but its more often a state of mind that prevents farmers from taking just a little money out and bringing the family away for some R&R.

I have a friend with a 180/200 cow herd and he thinks the same way, always finding something to be tinkering at or to spend money on rather than going away with the family, well it takes its toll, I know his only son (10 yo) has no time for the farm as it takes his father away from them so much. He's a real nice guy, but his priorities are all wrong.

Genuine question: do you have to employ minders for the farm if you head away?
