Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Methinks that more research is needed, and such research should be ongoing to build a longitudinal foundation for meta-analysis overtime.

Not sure that "abandonment on the digital age of consent" given the profit-motive driving most company decisions is the best way to go. Some regulation may be needed, but setting the threshold is problematic indeed.
Indeed. Although now it is merely used as a political football which is never the best way to get things done!

Chain of events. Case of one crisis. Media breaking news. Public outcry. Congress legislates age of consent. Executive fails to enforce. Back to beginning. Social media continues as before. Nothing accomplished.

That's pretty much it. Repeat same process then for next crisis!

Age of consent in America? Policy often not informed by science. Sensationalism currently prevails.

    IIRC the research suggests 13?

Age 13 threshold: Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) is a United States federal law, located at 15 U.S.C. §§ 6501

A positive step. Companies now have to make the consumer aware of what data they collect and offer an opt in, or opt out option. Hopefully more start to follow the California model.

Absolutely, which just highlights how profitable it was before it was made publicly known how much data was being passed on behind the computers scenes!

On the subject of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook fined £500,000 for lack of transparency.

Cambridge Analytica's name is in the mud as attempts to "sell the company but only received four proposals, including an offer for £1 for the scandal ridden data firm’s brand name." Link: https://www.ft.com/content/e0d93292-87b4-11e8-bf9e-8771d5404543

Thing is, others involved get away with little more than a rap on the knuckles.

In retrospect. During era of smart-phones. Age of consent seems impractical. How to enforce, etc.?

It would most likely have a lukewarm reception and would need a proper model to be implemented universally to have any chance of catching on. Otherwise it may just be a waste of time.

Age of consent. How to ensure not arbitrary & capricious? Not line in sand? Influenced by political winds. Blowing this way today. That way tomorrow. Examples. Age of consent to drive in South Dakota is 14. To sign legally-binding contracts 18. To join the military and die for country 18. To be tried as an adult, convicted, and sent to prison 18. To drink a beer 21. Should age of consent be raised for social media accounts to 21? To be certain that all terms and conditions of adulthood are met? Or are the rationales for all these age of consents suspect?

They certainly do seem to be random, but in truth they are probably relics from a time long past and nobody has had the good sense to rejig them for the times we live in!!

Digital age of consent at 16 sounds about right to me. 21 for drinking beer and driving sounds about right!

Summary of "age of consent for social media accounts." Need more empirical research. Before age can be determined with rigor.

Might be an idea to make citizens more aware of these things via various educational institutions (1st, 2nd, 3rd level etc).

Not so much the firewall of China, but incorporate a short course via work, school, college, and for pensioners etc. Its doable, but whether it would take off is another question entirely.

May suffer from the disconnect between theory, policy, and practice.

It would take a bit of work to bring it all together, but it is possible. A worldwide consensus might be impossible, but there would be a few absolutes to work and build a base from. When it comes down to it, the aim would be to have the populace well informed enough to make their own judgements.

Still possible though. It would not be implemented by the current administration, I agree with you there. However, the next presidential race is only around the corner. A more progressive administration, should they be elected in 2020, would see the benefit.

Ronald Reagan forced 50 states to adopt 21 drinking age. Threatened to withhold federal highway funds. Would Trump have to do the same? Age of consent would not go well in California. Their powerful and wealthy Silicon Valley would lobby to defend business interests.

South Dakota challenged Reagan all the way to the Supreme Court. SD lost. They raised drinking age. Will Trump tweet age of consent at 3AM?

Not so much age of consent, but rather if there is going to be little chance of implementing it, why not enrol media classes for all? Get the populace engaged in digital matters and how to be more aware to protect themselves online.
