Some Championship management new to start with

Slaven Bilic has been appointed to West Brom on a two year deal. Its a long way from Al-Ittihad. It feels like he talks a better game than he manages one.

Swansea have appointed ex Liverpool duo Steve Cooper and Mike Marsh as No 1 and No 2. Cooper also managed the England U17s to World Cup success. He was very progressive at the Liverpool academy.

Boro look like appointing Jonathan Woodgate with Robbie Keane as his right hand man.

League One lose one of its resident basketcase clubs in Charlton, but gains one back in Bolton.

Northampton doing their almost yearly sign all the players routine. Signed 9 new players, and then they'll wonder why they're not playing as a team. League 2 mid table or worse beckons.

    Cobblers!

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Robbie Keane new assistant manager to Jonathan Woodgate at Middlesbrough.

I made it very clear to everyone at Middlesbrough that I would not be coming here if I had to give up my Ireland role and they are happy to agree.

League One lose one of its resident basketcase clubs in Charlton, but gains one back in Bolton.

    Promotion hasn't diminished Charlton's basketcaseness
Charlton Athletic have been unable to reach an agreement with manager Lee Bowyer regarding the extension of his contract.

The fact the club is for sale has not helped with finding an agreement. The current owner needs to take into account that a new owner may want to appoint his own manager. However, this concern did not stop the current owner proposing a contract extension of one year to Lee Bowyer, even though the club may be sold in a few weeks. Under those circumstances a multi-year extension would not be good business practice.

In addition, since the club is still losing money, which is one of the reasons why the club has not been sold yet, the focus on reducing costs means that we are extremely limited on payroll increases.

Lee has been offered a one-year extension to his contract at a level which is approximately three times what he had since his last increase when he became permanent manager in September. It is six times what he earned when he started as assistant manager in 2017 and 50% more than what any Charlton manager previously had (excluding the Premier League years). This reflects the strong desire we have to continue to have Lee as our manager. But Lee wanted much more.

The owner understands Lee’s point of view, because many Championship clubs pay huge amounts (some pay millions of £ per year) to their manager. It is fair that Lee feels he should be paid like many other Championship managers. That the average Championship club makes a loss of around £15 million per year is not something players should care about. The owners are crazy.

This is why we could not come to an agreement. Another element may have influenced as well. Unlike previous contract discussions, Lee wanted an agent to handle it. We reluctantly accepted. However, involving a player agent in a manager’s contract discussion is not healthy. If the agent helps make the manager more money, it may result in the manager to have a more positive attitude towards players proposed by the same agent, a conflict of interest. Obviously, Lee is above such things, but it is nevertheless not a healthy situation.

The club hasn’t started to look for any other manager in the meantime and does not intend to appoint a permanent manager, since the club is going to be sold. A caretaker manager will be announced in due course and in the meantime the other staff members will continue to prepare the upcoming season for which a lot of good work has been performed already.

If Lee does change his mind before his contract expires and chooses to continue his good work at Charlton, he is still welcome to stay.

However our ability to sell the club is the most important thing right now.

    I love the Football League

That'll make a lot of people here feel old now. It was only like 15 years ago right?

Alan Curbishley was always linked with getting a chance at a top 4 club while he was keeping them mid table and when he stepped down after refusing a new contract it all went to pot for him and the club when he left.

If I remember right Gerrard wanted him as manager of Liverpool over Rafa when Liverpool were interviewing for the job.

McClaren got the England job just ahead of him as well.

Not be outdone in the basketcase stakes, Birmingham have gone ahead and sacked Garry Monk. Not like he did a great job keeping Birmingham up last year with a points deduction and transfer embargo. Owners want more attractive football but decided to sell without Monk's approval supposedly their most creative player to their main rivals. Really is a mess at the club, not sure what manager would touch the club particularly when another points deduction is likely and the squad will be primarily composed of youth players. Honestly the hope kills you, really seemed at the end of the season that Birmingham were at a turning point and there will be some stability at least on the field but no the rest of the summer will be an utter nightmare.

It makes you yearn for the days of the local coal mine owner who buys his local side. These foreign owners of second rank sides seem a particularly rum bunch.

And a big lump of a striker with no front teeth from some mining town whose dream is to make enough money to buy a pub in Doncaster...always guaranteed to score 15+ goals a season (all headers) in any division except the top flight...and all

You only have to look through the Dream duo's results last season - like a long slow march towards Moscow in winter.

    MON gone

Wonder will he give a pig ignorant interview now like he regularly did with RTÉ

    Will he fcuk...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,463 ✭✭✭Kiwi_knock

His appointment in the first place was par for the course with a lot of these new owners, absolutely clueless. Seemed to be shocked that MON played negative football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,890 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Keane saw it coming and jumped ship so he wouldn't have another sacking on his CV.

Forest were after Jokanovic, who wanted too much money, so they turned to O'Neill. Two managers with completely different styles of football, was a bizarre appointment in the first place.

Cocu to Derby as manager is mooted!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,746 ✭✭✭BullBlackNova

Would be interesting. Did a great job at PSV but tanked at Fenerbahce. Derby is a totally different challenge for him. They seem to be thinking outside the box, though, which is interesting. I presume Jody Morris is going with Lampard but, if not, Derby should give him a shot. Meant to be a great coach with young players especially.

Possibly because older players remember him as a footballer!

Still hard to see why Lampard is getting the Chelsea gig. Granted they had a remarkable result in one game against Leeds, goalkeeping calamities, a stupid sending off etc. But he was a long way from being the best Championship manager last season.

I see the Championship kicks off this Friday with newly promoted Luton taking on Middlesbrough. Bit of Irish interest in that one probably.

So hard to predict what will happen in this league but who do you think gets automatic promotion? I'll go for West Brom and Fulham for the top two spots. I can see Leeds at least in the play-off places, along with Cardiff for the Warnock factor.

Hard to look past Fulham for automatic promotion with the forwards they have. There is nearly always a surprise team to challenge for automatic as well so maybe Stoke or Boro. Leeds, West Brom, Cardiff, Huddersfield, Derby, Bristol, and Forest will all be near abouts as well. However it is hard league to predict, will always be surprise challengers so really any team has a shot.

At this stage I'm just hoping Birmingham stay in the league and avoid another points deduction. New attacking style of play to go with a new formation, it would be nice to see good football but it reminds me too much of the Zola days which were a disaster. Some decent signings though, so I will be cautiously optimistic for the season even with a Permanent Caretaker Coach in charge.

That was a dreadful penalty by Assombalonga, he had a great chance to make it 4-2 moments earlier as well. Good game though.

Nottingham Forest probably in the market for a new keeper.

2 great goals by Lawrence, Huddersfield still a mess defensively.

Currently, Bury have not been allowed play a game and in peril Bolton with -12 points have promised homeless Coventry that their game at Bolton on Saturday will go ahead, but with no ticket details announced yet.

LOI has a challenger for the Greatest League in the World.

Huddersfield have sacked Jan Siewert following their 2-1 loss to Fulham on Friday night. He only managed 1 win in 19 games.

Chris Hughton would seem an ideal candidate for the job.

a night of late comebacks in league one

Ipswich score twice to beat Wimbledon 2-1 in the last ten minutes, Shrewsbury win 2-3 at Accrington after being 2-0 down after an hour, Portsmouth draw 3-3 with 9 man Coventry despite being 3-1 up with 15 minutes to go.

On the back of the defeat to Sunderland, Jacett will be under pressure.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

Bolton Wanderers are in danger of docked points for missing thier Tuesday match. While Bury look like being expelled entirely. Not played a match as the league waits for proof of clubs ability to pay it's debt and secure its 2019/2020 future.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,694 Mod ✭✭✭✭dfx-

Bolton supposedly called off their match because the administrator did not want to make the teenage youth players play so much

If that's the case, they're finished because the fixtures are not going to let up and they've no one else to play for them.

Sky Sports countdown clock to the 5pm Bolton and Bury deadlines is one of the most tasteless things I've seen them do.

What's the point of giving them deadlines if the reality is they come and go then the efl just go "ok, just one more chance now, get it sorted by thursday".

Should there not be an actual deadline of say 1st August. If you're not in a position to meet criteria by then you drop out of the league and are replaced?

Bury will probably reform as a phoenix club in a very low Non-League tier.

It's hard to imagine Bolton and their large stadium being wound up.

But Fiorentina and Parma were both liquidated and started afresh.
