Played a good few hours last night.

Started on the normal difficulty (Veteran), and did the tutorial and about 3 or 4 hours of play itself.

It's a solid turnbased XCOM type game, but everyone knew that anyway, the differences are, it's incredibly detailed in shots taken, actually it's so good it can be frustrating with some weapons.

For instance, i used a heavy class with a cannon to aim at an enemy, fired a single shot blast from the cannon through the enemy, killing it, and the shot continued to rip off the arm of another behind him, and continued again to blow up a gas tank behind the second enemy.. I actually swore at the monitor in excitement!

Shortly afterwards, i was using the freeaim ability, which is really fluid to the game with a sniper to headshot an enemy, i had maybe a hair which was not inside the inner reticle and managed to miss entirely, which was disappointing, and also made me swear at the monitor.

The difference between this and XCOM EU/EW/2 is that it takes itself a lot more seriously and has a massive amount of detail or attention to detail. Battles are slower and more punishing. The geoscape is cluttered with things to explore and lore to reveal, which by the way is very well written.

My major gripes with it are that music is dull and mostly uninteresting, and the voice acting on the soldiers is poor.. i can live with it, but it's mediocre at best. Would have liked to stick my mass effect voicepacks in but yeah.. not happening at this point.

Anyway, that aside, if you loved XCOM, you'll love this.

I'm reckoning it's an 80% or above, average on metacritic.
No doubt i'll be playing til christmas anyway.

I see they're planning 5 pieces of DLC for this - I think I'd rather just wait till they've finished with all that, even if it means another year's delay.

Have little experience with turn based rpg, finding this quote challenging. Hopefully my game can improve otherwise i feel it's going to end up on the abandonware list. Side effect of game pass.

Anyone know any good tutorials or play throughs to help me out?

Look for Christopher Odd or Marbozir on YouTube, they're both strategy games specialists and will have a lot of useful tips for someone new to this sort of thing. I've been watching Odd's playthrough this last week or so.

Can't say I loved it. Just didn't hold my interest for whatever reason. Not a patch on X-Com.

Enjoying Wasteland 3 at the moment - scratching that turn based itch.

X-COM Prohibition Empire of Sin also just landed earlier this week. I've been looking forward to that, picking it up tonight
