Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Can anyone suggest places to go/things to do for a fit solo traveller in Puerto del Carmen?

    Regardless what you do during the day, find a bar called Nellys it in the old town, its owned by a guy from Roscommon. Everyone is made welcome, even if you don't booze. Now it's in a fruity area but I am telling you u will not be on your own here.

    If you're into walking then the cliff walk to Puerto Calero & back or towards Matagorda / the airport.
    There are good cycle paths to Arrecife & beyond and plenty of bike hire places.
    If you want to get out of PdC then car hire or tours are reasonable and places such as :-
    - El Golfo
    - Mirador del Rio
    - Timanfaya national park
    - Isla Graciosa ( Ferry from Orzola )
    - Fundacion César Manrique
    - Cuevas de los Verdes
    are all worth a visit.
    Also if you're into hiking Caldera Blanca is well worth it, it's an easy hike about 500m to the top and around 2km round the rim. There are tour groups which do the lava fields and calderas.
    Lastly as other poster said, there are plenty of watering holes in PdC and a warm welcome guaranteed in all.

    The public buses are coaches , so comfy and easy to explore the whole island on them for peanuts while sightseeing from a height. Also a day trip or better still overnight to corralejo on the ferry if Lanzarote isn’t big enough for you, make sure you visit o’neills Bar there.

    Yeah you'd get by ok. I'd normally wear Ecco trail shoes which are good for regular walks and hikes when in Canaries but also very light. A trail/hiking pole is handy too but not essential.

    Don't wear sandals on walks like that even on the flat, a lot of the ground off road is volcanic grain/picon and it gets into sandals and would drive you mental.

    Most tour operators do a north island & south island tours, amongst others.

    Tours will likely be advertised at your accommodation.

    Definitely recommend the north island tour & the Cuevas de los Verdes in particular.

    Trip up Timanfaya is excellent as well. We drove up there ourselves. Pay, park, hop on a coach around the volcano. Well worth it.

    +1 also applies to the walk from PdC to Puerto Callero. The first part (from the harbour at the old town in PdC) is a climb up a zig-zag cement path on a steep slope but once you get onto the flat, it's lava all the way so sandals are definitely out. It's a pretty featureless walk so consider coming back on the ferry, buy a ticket at the hut at the far end of the marina.
