Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Fixtures are here.

    Can anyone stop the Gonzagas?

How will new kids Ballinasloe do? They did alright at the European Club Cup last year, but this is the real deal! :)

NO. Might as well give them their medals now. It is not good for the league when one club is so dominant and there isn't much chance of anyone ever challenging them unless all the best players from the other teams all decide to join the same club.
At least the relegation battle will be exciting

Just as this is usually the most active of the league threads, there's a note up on the ChessLeague.net site about declaring teams ahead of the new season -
Captains are reminded to submit their teams before playing their first fixture as it needs to be processed before it will become available to enter the match results. This can be done through the Match Results Service. Any captains without a login or experiencing difficulty can contact the league's controller.

Yeah, with the Kanyamaralas registered in their squad, and all their regulars moving down two boards, Balbriggan look to be seriously competitive.

I believe the kids live in Portlaoise though, so it's a long drive for their home matches.

Not like Kilkenny to miss a trick if that's the case

I suspect match-making by the ICU. Our future GMs (going by the aspirations in the chairman's report) need to play top opposition on boards 1 and 2, so Balbriggan is a good fit.

Hard to say anything except another Gonzaga 1-2

Maybe we need to start giving out prizes for 3rd...

Is this the first time every match was on a Saturday?

Bray/Greystones are yet to declare their squad and Blanchardstown are still one player light.

Let's hope we won't see this season many games played in advance or (worse) postponed for insufficient good reason.

    What?

Trinity only had 4 of their declared squad playing tonight and had to use 3 subs, giving a walkover on B8 which explains some of the scores.

Elm Mount were lucky; but we can only play the opposition presented to us! In fact I rested myself to give them a chance ;-)

Pretty sure that Gonzaga A will be in 2nd or 3rd place after 11 rounds. Gonzaga B will probably be in 5th-6th place after 11 rounds. The winners, comfortably enough too, after 11 rounds, will be

I do not understand this. What has smoking got to do with anything? I personally do not smoke or approve of people smoking either. "lul" =?
The team that wins will be the team with the most points scored after 11 rounds and it will not be Gonzaga A or B this year. We will know this team next year. Probably they will have about 5 points (maybe 3) of a cushion ahead of the nearest team, which might be Gonzaga A, or another team. Like for example Elm Mount. The notion that Gonzaga A are the so clear favs is based on out of date information and no longer correct.

If spidersweb would like to bet on Elm Mount or anyone else finishing ahead of Gonzaga A then please get in touch and I will be glad to take your bet. If You want to bet on Ireland winning the rugby world cup or qualifying for Euro 2020 I will be happy to take those bets too!!

    Gonzaga A will finish top.
Gonzaga B will finish middle of the table.
Ballinasloe and Blanch will be relegated

Blanchardstown keep introducing unrated players that no one has ever heard of before and who seem to be decent players so I wouldn't be confident in predicting their relegation. It is the clubs that have problems turning out their strongest team for every match that are most at risk.

Agreed. How can Trinity register 11 players for their team (three more than required), yet only get out three of them on the night? Especially against one of the strongest clubs.
Was this a deliberate ploy to set a hot pace for the Gonzaga teams?

It makes a mockery of the whole league.

On the other hand, if the policy is to have the team largely consist of current students, that is creditable.

Trinity's problem is quite a few of their registered players do not live in Dublin and have to commute from Cork/Northern Ireland so will never be able to play midweek.

Based on the team lists we have seen so far I would guess it will be Ballinasloe + 1 of Trinity, Blanchardstown, Dublin and Rathmines for the second relegation spot.

If Trinity can't field decent teams midweek it undermines the integrity of the whole league. It is not fair that some teams have to meet the strongest Trinity team while others get to play a much weakened version. Rathmines have to play them away for the second year in a row while some relegation rivals get soft home matches against them. Every year Trinity seems to be a problem, the best solution would be if they left the league altogether and allowed their players to return to their parent clubs.

Did Trinity do that for the first time? No they did that on numerous occasions previously. Will they be relegated? No they won't. The big guns will show up when they really need them.

This just highlights how inconvenient midweek games are. All league games should be in the one venue on weekends and would avoid all the stress of chasing people around, ggs. Praise.

Not everyone can play weekends too. Some players have families

I would prefer not to play on Saturdays at all. I don't mind giving up a weekend for a chess tournament but it just isn't worth it for one game. I think that the best solution would be two separate leagues, one midweek and one at weekends. If clubs wanted to enter a team for both then fair enough and the same would apply to any players that were happy to play in both but those of us who only wish to play midweek could do so and those who only like weekends would be catered for too.

Your on then! I just don't see Gonzaga A doing it this year and possibly 2nd or 3rd would be about right. It will become more apparent by xmass.

Surely there's an LCU/ICU code that says you can't bet on the outcome of an event in which you are participating???
