    Starts this week.

    This season there'll be 18 teams competing in three divisions;

    Division 1: Ballynafeigh 1, Muldoons 1, CS Lewis Lions, Belfast South: The A Team, Bangor Groomsport, QUB 1
    Division 2: Ballynafeigh 2, Muldoons 2, CS Lewis Witches, Belfast South: Kelly's Heroes, Civil Service, Fruithill
    Division 3: Ballynafeigh 3, Ballynafeigh 4, QUB 2, QUB 3, Andrew's Army, Bangor Wannabes

    Notes:
    • Lindores are now CS Lewis. Had they sufficient numbers to field a third team, they had planned to take that idea to its logical conclusion and name that team the Wardrobes.
    • Bangor are back up to three teams thanks mainly to the efforts of Andrew Todd at Bangor Grammar School, where he has set up a thriving after-school chess club. The Wannabes and Andrew's Army will be comprised of Bangor GS players.
    • QUB are also up to three teams. It could have been even more if the entry deadline was later; I'm told they recruited a ludicrous number of new players at the QUB freshers fair; at least 40 paid-up members, and at least 30 others expressing an interest. They also have a few non-student members now, so they have quite the panel to choose from.

    Division 1 and Division 2 fixtures are available; due to technical issues with the UCU website, the Division 3 fixtures are not yet available, but they should be up in due course.

    e: Division 3 fixtures are now up. Also, the first result is in - Muldoons 2 drew 2.5-2.5 with Kelly's Heroes. Very good result for Muldoons 2 - they were outrated by over 200 points per board.

    I would except that we don't have a medical doctor which is surprising consider what we work with .. on a lighter note if we had stretcher bearers we'd have these guys for sure

    Brilliant situation building in the division1 competition. With the top five all due to play each other over the last few weeks, you could throw a blanket over them all and make an arguement for anyone of them succeeding.
    Though the dashing good looks and suave sophistication of the ballynafeigh team is worth an extra point straight away. :eek:

    In addition, a number of postponed matches have been played this past week. Ballynafeigh 1 beat QUB 1 by 3.5-1.5 and the CS Lewis Lions beat Bangor Groomsport 3-2 in Division 1, while Andrew's Army beat Ballynafeigh 3 by 3.5-1.5 and Ballynafeigh 4 beat the Bangor Wannabees 3-2 in Division 3. Going into the final week, this means that:
    • Muldoons 1 will play Ballynafeigh 1 on Monday night to determine the Silver King winners. Ballynafeigh 1 must win by at least 3.5-1.5 to retain the trophy. Keep an eye on ulsterchess.net, because I think this match will be broadcast live.
    • If Ballynafeigh 2 draw against Muldoons 2 on Tuesday night, they will win the John Strawbridge Cup. Muldoons 2 are the bottom side - a loss would guarantee their relegation, otherwise Wednesday night (NICS-Fruithill and Kelly's Heroes-CS Lewis Witches) could be interesting.
    • Division 3 is a bit more complicated, because in addition to the scheduled Week 15 fixtures there remains one postponed match - which happens to be between leaders QUB 2 and second-placed Andrew's Army. Andrew's Army must win to remain in contention. At the bottom, the Bangor Wannabees are five points behind and must beat fifth-placed QUB 3 by at least 4.5-0.5 to avoid the wooden spoon.
