Forging Rebar in the Campfire...

    You will need:

    A mallet (at least 4 pound)
    A fire that's been built up to logs of wood coals / ashes
    Thick gloves you can grip the metal with

    Tongs (Optional)
    A hard surface
    Oil / Water / Snow for tempering (this is optional, tempering is not essential).


    The Rebar sections were perfect for a locking system, but bending them cold just wasn't going to happen. The steel was old and bold but we got the fire going and rediscovered the ways of basic smithying.
    One day I hope to get a proper forge going, but for now it's the campfire forge and great rocks for the anvil :)

    3 Rebar sessions later and we had the locking bars ready...

    You can knock together a basic forge pretty easy if you can lay your hands on a few odds and ends (sounds like you can ;) )
    Have a look at anvilfire.com, there's a few links in there somewhere to rigging one up out of a brake drum and a hairdryer. Essentially all you need is a pot for the coals and some method of injecting air into it to make the coals burn hotter.
