Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience using https://www.cartakeback.ie/

Been quoted a decent price to have my car picked up by them? €150 to be precise. No charge for collection.

Everywhere seems to just want to pick them up and not pay anything, possibly give you a small fee if you can get it to them.

    Am I missing something?

The various locations on their website appear to be independent car dismantlers who probably have a business arrangement with cartakeback. I looked at the 'branches' they claim to have in Dublin city (Red Cow), Bray and Tullamore and in each case, there is an authorised treatment facility (ATF) at that location.

Taking Bray as an example, the ATF is Condron Car Dismantlers.....

    https://www.cartakeback.ie/branches/sell-scrap-car-bray

Listed as an approved ATF here ..... https://www.elves.ie/ATFS/Wicklow

I wouldn't be concerned if I was bringing my car to one of their 'branches' as each one appears to be a standalone ATF but you have to realise that cartakeback is not an ATF so if they come and take your car away, have you disposed of it according to the regulations? Hard to say. Fine if they send you a certificate of destruction later but until they do, you're in limbo.

So are you saying you would get more dealing with these independent places yourself? Local place (registered) are only willing to collect it, not give me anything for it

From what you're telling us, you arrange a collection with cartakeback.ie They come to your place, hand over the cash and take your car away. The problem is that there is nothing to stop them selling it off to some joy rider. Then a few weeks later, the cops come knocking on your door at 4 a.m., enquiring about a hit and run involving 'your' car. Or you start getting parking or speeding tickets in the post. Which,as the registered owner, you will be obliged to pay.

That's the risk you take, unless you deal directly with an ATF. Not saying that company are cowboys, just saying that they are not an ATF.

Their FAQ seem to address those concerns:

It's a valid concern, but I was actually looking at these lads before myself, and their website assures you that everything is done properly. For example, from the FAQ:
If you drop your car off at the recycling centre, your Certificate of Destruction will usually be issued while you wait.

If we're collecting your car, you'll receive your certificate or a receipt for the collection there and then. If you are given a receipt, your certificate will be sent to you in the post by our recycling centre, or directly by the Department of Transport if we have notified them electronically. Please allow up to ten days for it to arrive.

So at the very least, you'd have notice that they took the car from you on a certain date. That should be at least some protection if the car does end up involved in something at a later stage.

Ended up not using them in the end myself purely because where we live isn't close enough to any of their locations for somebody to come collect a scrap car. It ended up being collected by a local yard instead, who took it away and sorted paperwork all right, but didn't give me any payment for it.

They might do for you. Not me.

These guys have to make a profit. They come to the OP's house and hand over €150 cash, then they tow his car to an ATF. Who is offering zero to the ordinary Joe, so why would they pay these guys €150 plus a sum to cover their costs? Commercially, it doesn't add up.

    Exactly. Doesn't make sense.

Seems like there is zero profit in this, cutting out the middleman (carback) actually see you get less than if you use the middle man.

I don't doubt they do go the proper route in getting rid of your car, but be interesting to see who is behind this outfit.

Id imagine they would have the right to strip it for parts first no? Thats where they make their money.

If they are offering 150, it's possibly newer and parts worth more than some cars as most of these companies offer tiny money
As a matter of interest, what age is the car and what model etc?

Indeed, you car has value. If you went directly to one of the ATFs they may even offer you more than €150. I brought a car to one in the UK before and got £300, and the end of life destruction certificate was emailed on to me afterwards.
