    Oh my!

That looks good. Feels right? ... right? Kinda?

Is that supposed to be Mars? Is Earth turning into Mars? Is the writing on the windows of the 'Vintage Casino' Korean? I don't know languages from the area but I've seen that Korean seems to have more circular shapes like those in their.. Hanja is it?

It looks ... evocative & moody. Which in of itself is the right speed for Blade Runner IMO, as part of the magic of the original was its undoubted tone & mood. There was a deep dreamlike state in that Los Angeles of 2019, so at least it looks like they're trying to bring a similar pulse & feel to the sequel. You know, going by a 1:50 minute teaser :D

The actual aesthetics & technicalities of the world have been cribbed & copied to death over the last 35 years, simply upping the scale was never going to work for that kind of film. I still don't think the story needs a sequel, but these first glances make me think they might yet make it work.

It kinda answers the big question from the first film right? Looks like he's being hunted? That makes him a replicant right? Maybe? Is it a red herring? How is he still alive though, replicants ain't supposed to live long are they? Maybe he's different?

Wasn't the Sean Young replicant in the original supposed to have an unknown lifespan? That might not have been in all the versions though, I think it was in the one that got a cinema release with the Sam Spade type voice-over. So maybe he's a similar model. Or maybe he's not a replicant at all and is being hunted for some other reason.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If Ford is a replicant, I'm out of this. The idea of an OAP robot is fcuking dumb on so many levels.

Other ideas i've thought about why he's out to meet Deckard included:
    - Could be this new guy is just coming to seek his help like in the first film.
    - Could be Deckard is protecting a replicant.

Oh and just now.. what if he's protecting a Human and yer man is a replicant hunting them down:eek:

According to reports, the second trailer for this will supposedly appear before "Alien: Covenant", so might get a more 'plotty' one that gives more detail of what to expect from this sequel.

Still maintaining a healthy scepticism for this, seems like the healthiest approach, despite the calibre of those involved & that enigmatically appealing first trailer.

The world of the 'Ghost in the Shell' movie was quite Blade Runneresque, wonder if those sets were recycled.

That looks stunning...Hope it lives up to its promise. I'm looking forward to the soundtrack almost as much as the film!

Is this the only major sequel since Mad Max: Fury Road to display any sort of aesthetic ambition?

Actually: Is this the only blockbuster since Mad Max: Fury Road to display any sort of aesthetic ambition?

Also: Go away Ghost in the Shell, that is how you do neon futuristic cityscapes.

Visually it looks very impressive, Villeneuve's fingerprints are all over it for sure (I imagine his 'Dune' adaptation will be equally arresting). I forgave Ghost in the Shell more than others I think, but I'd agree with Johnny Ultimate that the above trailer shows a steadier, smarter hand in growing a neon landscape that doesn't just rely on neon noise. This surely must be a film that simply demands a cinematic experience & location.

That said, the actual script looks ... suspiciously amped compared with its progenitor. I hope the trailer's just cutting a particularly action-heavy promotion, because when all's said & done, Blade Runner 1982 was a lazy, dreamy noir drama & not an action adventure (heck, the big finale featured our hero basically trying to run away from the fight).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,957 ✭✭✭Dots1982

To the opposite of the previous poster I think the trailer looks very light on action (a couple of quick shots at the end but the trailer for the most part is dialogue heavy) and no idea given of interesting android villains like the first movie. I'm skeptical.

    That's the thing.

How can Deckard be a replicant if this movie is set in 2049 and the man is 73? That goes completely against the replicant and their minimal lifespan setup in the original.

Out of all the movies that don't need a sequel....

I'm afraid that they might try to shoehorn it in. Scott's gone to great lengths to try and force it in the original, with his susequent cuts and eliminating it at this point causes problems. Although, it wouldn't for me, because AFAIC, the only 'Blade Runner' is the 1982 version.

I'm really hoping that that whole bullshit angle has been dropped and Deckard isn't some OAP robot in this sequel. However, I've heard that it's going to be left "open".

As for the trailer, it looks nice enough, but lacks the feel of 'Blade Runner'. It's looking more like an action movie, whereas the original was more restraint and thoughtful.

I suppose todays audience would consider that "boring".

I actually much prefer sequels that try to do their own thing, I think that they've got a much better chance of being a good film that way.

The example I always use for how to do a sequel is Aliens. Took the pure horror of the original and melded it with a war/action movie. The result was a fresh film that I preferred over the original, which doesn't happen all that often.

True. But, it can't be too much of its own thing. Otherwise, you might as well just make a completely different film altogether. But the big Hollywood problem of "biggerer and betterer" rarely bodes well. Not that I am saying that's what's happening here. Either way, a more pumped 'Blade Runner' won't be a deal breaker for me, so long as it isn't trash like 'Fast and Furious 20'. But, if Deckard is a robot, it can go and shite. That's the real no no.

I have always preferred 'Alien' myself. It's heavy mood is far superior to 'Aliens'. But, as sequels go, Cameron's film is at the top of the list, there's no doubt about it.

The thing for me is 'Alien' broke new ground (relatively speaking) in its world building. 'Aliens', as great as it is, feels like a bog standard 80's action flick at times.

Like your man did Sicario and Arrival, both really good films, but this?

^Thats a serious contender for "greatest scene you can ever watch in a movie" for the pumpkin.

Blade Runner is a perfect film like. A sequel is at best, unnecessary and at worst, a giant poo over the original.

To be honest didn't need to pause, first viewing of the trailer saw that and was like "well great, he's a replicant".

Trailers just show too much these days. Like anyone needs to be sold on Blade Runner.

A featurette was released, and while the talking heads don't add much, the video contains a smattering of new footage, giving a better sense of the world & its various locations. Nothing plot spoilery.

Yeah no more trailers for me, too much in that one.

I've always maintained this too, he just oozes 'charmless' to me. It's a personal view but I just don't like him as an actor so my heart sunk when I heard he'd been cast. It killed my interest in seeing the film almost as much as Ridley Scott's control as a producer after the debacle he's made of the Alien franchise.
