Well lads need a new pair of hunting trousers for the season and wondering if anyone has tried percussion or decathlon pants. Seem like good value. Thanks

I have a few items of clothing from Percussion.
A single skin soft fabric trousers I use for early season stalking (naturaly breathable not waterproof but will dry quickly). Very quiet excellant for woodland stalking.
The other pair are a heavier lined trouser with a more robust but some what noisier synthetic material. Water resistant, but not very breathable. Mainly used for rough shooting.
I have the Percussion Veste Chasse Marly Jacket, good light/ medium jacket as well as a old game keepers vest that's well trashed but in good working order.

The Decathlon stuff always strikes me as good quailty gear, I've picked up various odds and sods (hats, clothing, cleaning gear, gun cases (hard and soft), binos hardness, pouches, bags etc, etc) all still working if not battle scared.

Another chap here was inquiring about trousers and I suggested Deer Hunter Avantai trouser. These are light weight trousers, fully water proof and breathable perfect for high activity use. I use mine in the Wicklow mountains and are perfectly suited for crawling through sodden ground as seen in the last two week ends. The quiet material is also suited for woodland stalking if so desired.

I have a couple of Percussion trousers
My go to one is the Marly, soft fabric, silent, breathable and very showerproof ( withstood about 2 hours of heavy drizzle/showers last weekend)
I also have a Fuseau ? which are the same as the Marly but have a "briarproof" patch from the knee to the waist. Again very good.

The only caution I would give you with regard to percussion are that they are very tight fitting on the thighs and calves. This causes a bit of restriction if you are climbing over gates/ditches etc.

I picked up a nice pair of Deerhunter "Rogaland stretch"trousers about a week ago and they are basically the same material as the Percussion but they have a stretchy fabric and they are also a bit wider fitting.

Thanks for the reply. Have the avanti trousers zip pockets on them, It doesn't say on any websites whether they do or not. Thanks

Ahhhh..... I'm not 100% sure, I'll get back to you. I do know that there's only three pockets, two hip and a back pocket.
I don't tend to carry much more than some surgical gloves and a packet of tissues in my trouser pockets, preferring to carry everything else ( rope, plastic bag, 5 extra rnds, spare knife and phone) in my jacket pockets while the rest hangs off me.

Cheers for the replies lads. Have any of ye tried the game brand of clothing, their excel ripstop pants seem like a good pair for the money but don't know anyone who has tried their stuff. Thanks

Percussion trousers are very tight in the upper part - fine when walking but uncomfortable when sitting - pity because otherwise great value and practical.

Got decathlon, warm waterproof trousers, find them quite good, although probably too warm as they are fleece lined.
Pretty waterproof too as I have to hose them down as they were covered in blood and mud - unlike my Harkila prohunter trousers .

Which ones did you go for and how did the sizing work out for you.
Thinking of getting a couple of pairs of the cheaper ones.

520 Warm Waterproof Driven Shooting Trousers

Sizing - followed the guide- very good.

As I said the trousers are very warm , thought they were too warm but I was thankful I had them yesterday morning,.

I have the tight percussion ones also, 2 friends had them too and eventually ripped them. the water resistance on mine is starting to go but I have them a while and usually wear chaps over them.
Bought a cheap pair of decathlon to try and iv ended up using them so far, they are lighter and quite waterproof.
I might try the deerhunter next as I have a jacket that is quite good

Sorry for hijacking the thread lads, but anyone recommend a good pair of trousers for heavy cover? Something thorn resistant and tear resistant.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,527 ✭✭✭Vizzy

Percussion do ( or did) a thornproof trousers - Fuseau Predator R2.

Available in a few places in Ireland.

Very good, but they are tight fitting, like all Percussion stuff, so try before you buy. Particularly if you are climbing ditches or over wire.

I got a present of a pair of Harkila Ultimate trousers and they are unreal, they feel like they'd repel a ricochet never mind a thorn.

They are heavier than any other trousers I've ever worn but the quality of the material is fantastic, you won't think twice about walking through any furze or brambles.

I should add they are a very long fit in the leg and you won't be tackling putting up a hem with your needle and thread.

Yea, they look very good. Just too pricey for me. What a great present that was. 👍

Anyone any experience with seeland? Heard they weren't bad for the price?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,597 ✭✭✭Feisar

I've a pair of Haglöfs Rugged Mountain trousers. Some job, a touch on the warm side though.

First they came for the socialists...

Very tempted to give these a try, thanks.

Just found this. Looks a good price, and an extra 15% off on good Friday.

I usually use Seeland woodcock trousers. Great when the weather is a bit colder.

They are quality. As I said though, they are warm. Great if yer waiting for ducks but too warm if out after a wiley cock pheasant! Just something to think about.

I have a pair of sealand Marsh trousers, not sure if they’re still available but I got them 4 years ago from irish shooting Knocknagosel, they are unreal tough in heavy cover, I’ve tried percussion and like said above burst and ripped crossing ditches due to being too tight fitting, I always used to wear wax chaps for heavy cover but no need with the Sealand Marsh,

Any pants and a pair of duck dri treggings. I wouldn't go rough shooting without them anymore.. Hand made and withstand anything. They've also stopped the welly from filling up a few times too.

I’ve had harkilla, deer hunter and ridgeline in the past. Either got drowned wet or was cold wearing them. Ended up buying a some kuiu gear from the states and haven’t looked back since.
