Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I do the marathon every year for the last 9 yrs and it really irritates me when I see them. Love to know am I the only one who feels like this and why do men feel the need to do it

its equality of outcome , we need to have a female only race in order to dramatically increase the numbers of women who get to complete a marathon

Hahaha it is not a marathon. Usually the distance is between 8K and 10K.

A man in a mini? Running around in public? Best leave it the women.

    I never ran a marathon.

I'm walking 10k/ day at the moment. I had no idea I had been walking an actual real marathon every single day...

Is it me or are people who drone on about marathons and the exact length of a marathon and how they've run a marathon and how an event called a mini marathon is definitely not a marathon really fooking boring?

A man might run in a women's mini marathon. A lady might run in a women's mini marathon. But a gentleman certainly wouldn't.

The marathon I'm referring to is just over 26 miles.

I could run it in the morning if so desired.

Want to race it when I'm in marathon race shape.

An all men's race should solve your problem, but men can't do that type of thing in this enlightened age.

I've never understood why people object to it being called a mini marathon.

"But a marathon is 26 miles"

Yeah, the clue is in the word 'mini'.

A marathon in the running sense is a fixed distance. You can't have a mini kilometer or a mini mile.

It's a bugbear of mine but whatever, I don't lose sleep over it.

I did the New York marathon back in 2008.
While running along I met this old lady who were running away at her own pace.
Got talking and she told me it was her 20th NY marathon and that she only took it up at 62 making her 82 years of age.
Needless to say I was pretty much in awe of her.
I'm pretty sure she'd spit on the term "mini marathon" and anyone that refers to a 10k as a "mini" marathon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 279 ✭✭Pocaide

I don't know why these men enter the women's mini marathon as it's clearly defined as women's only.

That being said I don't know why, when I go to a gent's toilet in a busy night club or bar I see women using the men's toilets.

    Go figure.

Don't know if it was mentioned so far, but the record for the *actual* marathon was smashed yesterday in Berlin by a Kenyan, Eliud Kipchoge. He ran it in 2 hours 1 minute and 39, knocking 78 seconds off the previous record.

This is the same guy who tried to break the 2 hour mark in ideal conditions on an indoor track last year, with a team of 30 pacers running ahead of him and rotating in and out, trying to keep him on pace, and he ran 2:00:25 (not an official record). Yesterday he had three 'pacers' running ahead of him, two dropped out after 15 km, unable to continue, and the third after another 10 km. He ran the last 17 km alone...
The Kenyan had gone through halfway in 1hr 01 min 06sec. But now he was alone and his hopes of shattering the record appeared to be in the balance. Yet it transpired that his pacemakers had been holding him back: Kipchoge ran the second half in 60min 34sec – or 4min 37sec per mile.

I mapped it out on Daftlogic, the cork 'marathon' was about 6.4 km, or 4 miles,

so, you'd want to be doing that in around half an hour, and do another six and a half laps at the same pace, to do a marathon in 3 hours 25 mins (which would just about qualify you for the New York marathon, in the 40-plus age group)

...needless to say, I wouldn't be able for it

    Is that the full marathon?

Fair play to ya. I reckon I'd be able for about a 10 hour marathon, maybe 9 and a half if I have my nutrition and reststops sorted out...

Someone would need to organise a women's marathon then.

I think it's the running of 26.2 miles that's stops most women (and men)from completing one.
