I daresay the British withdrew from Ireland with more bloodshed than they withdrew from many of their other colonies.

There was the 1916 Rising, the IRA campaign of violence against G Men and the B Specials and so on - and that was just the later phases of British rule. In reality, it took from the development of early national conscious in the late 1700's to get the limited independence that the Free State got in the 20's.

i guess two things that come to mind about how there was so little booldshed when britain withdrew from ireland. would be

1)geography britain is just beside ireland and can easily transport men back from ireland to britain or men from britain to ireland if the situation deemed it so

    2) politically their was an agreement between the irish parlament(dail) and the british government on the withdrawal and the future independance of ireland ie that been irish free state so that meant that that the irish government were not going to challegene the british forces as they left. but as we know there was an element within ireland who didnt agree with the treaty and wanted a pure 32 county republic and this group you would think might cause problems for the british group. but at this time this group was still pretty weak and their policies was more directed at removing the new irish government than causing problems for the british as they left.

i think another reason why nethier the the pro treaty or anti treaty had a policies of attacking the british as they left was that the IRA been the military wing of the irish government was weak at this time after a two year long booldy conflict its arms were running low and it suffered major loss of resources because of the burning of the four courts and the loss of men and arms that brought

The actual physical withdrawl was by agreement and actually quite simple and appointments (date, time, place, person) were made for the hand over of barracks, etc. and escorting of troops to ports. The Irish side actually had difficulty in doing the logisitics of the takeover (not enough personnel for security duties). I think the army calendar this year has details.

Handing over the treaty ports was again quite simple and greatly helped by the abdication.

Relative to some post colonial wars (e.g. Vietnam), Ireland was bloodless.
