Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Android 7 unsupported. What options?

    Hi.

I have a Redmi 4a. Cheap little phone, but I liked its size and it's been rock solid.

Got a message from the AIB app this week saying you need to update to android 8 or above.

From looking online it seems this phone is stuck on android 7. And I'd imagine it's no longer the most secure device?

What are my options. Am I simply looking at a replacement?

    Thanks

There are a few options if you are comfortable flashing roms:

If not, you are going to need to get a newer phone.

If you can do whatever you need via web browser then you might be able to log in with a card reader....

Yeah I can use the laptop. Was handy on the phone though.

Do you think my phone is still secure running version 7?

Thanks will take a look. Is this something that is widely done?

Apps can be a pain the butt what about asking them to see if they can send a text instead with a pin number to gain entry?

Boi customers like me are having app issues on mobile phones.

Dated version of android, but you probably can see your security patch level by going to

Settings - About phone - android version.

If your already locked out of using the app on your current phone, then you will need to contact the bank to switch to SMS or Card Reader (if you have one) for secure access to your account.

Isn't there issues with running banking/secure apps on phone when you root them?

AFAIK, they can be unrooted. Either way, factor in the possibility that AIB app might still throw up an error.

On a side note, does anyone know why some banks won't provide 2FA by SMS? If the risk is someone else having access to the phone then isn't that risk level the same with an app?

There was a problem with spoof banking texts and scams but that is a separate problem, those scam texts had web links to fake sites which only becomes a problem if those bad links are followed.

With an unlocked boot-loader & maybe custom roms google pay will not function.

If apps use google safety-net to check security of devices, they might not operate or install. Outdated info says it was possible to use magisk to hide your bootloader status, but don't know if them methods work any more.

It is possible to have a custom rom and not be rooted.

Check if your phone can make contactless payments

Check your Play Protect certification status

My phone is rooted and I can use the Revolut app, which introduced a block on rooted phones recently. There's an option within Magisk to hide itself from specified apps, and to rename Magisk to something else.

SMS is considered insecure for 2FA as it is possible trick carriers into redirecting messages. (How easy it is varies from country to country and carrier to carrier.)

Thanks. So bottom line is to suck it up and get a new phone. I've ordered a new one, but the one I had was running well.
