Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Have you completely uninstalled your graphics driver + all software and re-installed it? That was one of the things I had to do when I upgraded from W8.1 to the first version of W10 on September 30th

I picked up a cheap laptop to test 10 on and so far the only issue I can see with it is that it's unforgiving of the ancient 5400rpm hard drive that I put it on. I've got a Scorpio Black that should resolve that issue, though. Other than that it's looking pretty good. (Well, the other issue is that it misidentified the display adapter and it took a while to find the right driver - but that's mainly an issue because I was installing on Vista-era hardware...)

Really? I've installed on several old laptops with 5400rpm SATA drives and there were no issues. Surely you're not talking about a 10 year old laptop with a PATA drive?

Oh no, I mean the specific 5400rpm drive I used. I've not been convinced that it's entirely functional for ages, but it was the first drive I had to hand that had nothing important on it. The laptop itself came with a Scorpio Black drive, so once I've imaged its initial contents I'll probably bung 10 onto it. Given my past experience with Scorpio Black drives it should be a substantial improvement...

i put it on the same ultrabook I had been having issues with and it runs like brand new. Under the 8.1 OEM I had it took 5 minutes to sleep or shut down, now it can sleep in 2 seconds and shutdown in 5 seconds, wake in 2 seconds and boot in 4 seconds. Needless to say I'm sufficiently impressed.

Really, I will have to try it out so. I have a laptop on 8.1 that I don't use as it's so slow. I just put it down to old age.

Also I know I'm a bit late on the Windows 8.1 discussion. I read the first few pages, I'm on 8.1 on my desktop and I like it. I know it was a big change at first but once you use it, it ain't so bad. I actually like the tiles.

    10 has been out nearly 3 months - and it's free :)

Take a backup of your 8.1 in case you want to move back and then just upgrade to 10. See if it solves your issues.

10 is not out, it's in Technical Preview...

    Yes we all know that...

I've been running it on my main PC since the release date. It's perfectly stable and has full functionality (whatever is in 8.1 plus more). Plus it is free (to upgrade to or to install from scratch). If you don't believe me / don't seem to have any balls (:p) google for other people's experiences.

Seems like a smart move for mightyreds and others who experience difficulties in Windows 8.1. If they don't like it - or worse: if Windows 10 Technical Preview expires next April and for some reason there isn't an upgrade path, he could always go back to his backup of 8.1

You've obviously never used it on a touch screen...

As for it being out and free, you're aware that it'll stop working after a certain time, i.e. long before the full version is released in Autumn 2015?

I think it's a Windows 8 thing, it doesn't affect a lot of hardware or a lot of configs apparently, but all I know is Windows 10 turned that laptops life around. Couldnt possibly be old age on a 1-2 yr old laptop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

First impressions of Win 10, don't like it prefer 8.1
I've only being using it for a few mins but seems strange. It's not as fast as I'd hoped but it was the same as 8.1 as it is on my 9 year old laptop. It's a core 2 duo with 2 GB of RAM, both processor and RAM were updated over the years.

Mines only 5 months old I reset it yesterday, its running fine on just windows 8 not gonna go back to 8.1, long wait for 10 but I'll be upgrading when the full version comes out

No, I haven't. 10 worse than 8.1 for touch screen? You running the latest (third) version - I believe in the second version alone addressed more than 7,000 issues

    See my point ;)

That's why I recommended the poster leave a path back to 8.1 just in case the current (free) version is not upgradeable before it expires.

installed windows 10 preview on laptop a couple of days ago, a few minor bugs here and there as expected... the one major problem i'm having is with shutdowns/restarts - restarting but screen won't turn on; shutting down turns off the screen, but not the machine! solved every time by powering down with the power button, then powering on again... this is pretty annoying if anyone has experienced the same and knows a fix, please let me know! otherwise just wait for an update that fixes it hopefully...

Did you check the md5 to see if it is corrupted. If it is download again and re-install.

how do i check that? i downloaded the iso file through official channels (microsoft.com)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I just checked the Windows download site they use SHA-1. Go to windows site copy the SHA-1. and download this checker. If it matches file is good and you will have to wipe and re-install and if it is wrong it explains why you are having problems. But even if it matches wipe as I said as those problems are not normal what is happening to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,264 ✭✭✭✭manual_man

Right, i got the problem sorted. I re-installed Windows 8 pro (which i'd been using previously), and the restart/shutdown problems persisted.

After googling the issue, i came across the solution:

Control Panel->Troubleshooting->Fix Problems with Windows Update

After running this it said it had found (and fixed) a problem. No problems since, restart and shutdowns working perfectly.

    Happy Christmas all

Played around with the Tech Preview earlier. It looks OK tbh. Very much a reskinning of Windows 8.1 to have a proper start menu and little else so far. Will be interesting to see how it progresses. Nearly every time you do something in the OS, a pop up asks how you found the experience of doing so, so they're obviously very interested in user feedback this time round.

I've been running Windows 10 as my main OS since it came out and I've only had that feedback thing a handful of times. I think its far far more than a reskinning of Win 8. Best OS yet IMO - looking forward to seeing what changes are coming in the final release.

A lot of industry rumors that Windows 10 could be released as a free OS, I believe Apple have done this with their last release

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,778 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

Interesting, i hope so but I would not bet on it. They make too much money on - killing a massive revenue stream would not be a smart move unless they have some sort of freemium model planned. Corporate especially is a huge pile of cash for them, and most are still on 7 as very few upgraded to 8.1. 10 is where they will get it back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,489 ✭✭✭bennyineire

Yep I agree, I could see a possible freemium product like you say. But I imagine this would only target builds such as Starter or home but certainly not any enterprise versions.
Or maybe a free upgrade for anyone from Win7.

I'd be very surprised if any current/8.1 laptop won't run 10 when it's released

Preferably buy a brand with standard components and decent driver support though - I'm not sure what ASUS is like on that front

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,489 ✭✭✭bennyineire

I say by one now with 8.1, its almost a guarantied that you will get a free upgrade to Windows 10 if you have 8 or 8.1 or at the very worst it will cost ~20€ , I'm buying a new machine next month.
It could easily be October before 10 is realised commercially

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,778 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

There is no point in waiting. Win 10 is not that different from Win 8.1, the average use won't notice much of a difference if you use a start menu replacement You can always install the free Windows 10 preview anyway, I've been using it on both my computers without a hitch for months..

Yeah its not much different but it seems much snappier to me, even on the Technical Preview. Really looking forward to the Consumer Preview next week.

    Hey Guys,

Apologies for my lack of expertise in this , but i thought i'd ask you guys for some brief advice...

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad, about a year old and for some reason it's incredibly slow yet has very little on it, few pictures and movies, very little added software. Bit disappointed with it's performance tbh as i bought a decent version so i thought ( core i7 3632QM)

So basically, i was looking to do a full reinstall if i can find the disk that came with it as there are a few issues , or alternatively update to windows 10 like you guys. I've been on the windows site but cant find an upgrade...? Also, do i have to save all my files on an external HD?

Anyone any advice? It's been a long while since i've had to reinstall windows on any device

Thanks for any replies in advance,
    Tom
