Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Scorn not their simplicity?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Simplicity won’t have anything to do with it. You’ll probably find the culprits have enough savvy to know the social welfare system, their entitlements and so on back to front, also the concept of free legal aid and free everything.. maybe if they are caught and convicted a free spell down the joy for a week or two would be money well spent, might find an outlet for their artistic leanings other then trying to ruin what someone worked hard to create for the potential enjoyment of others...

They should find out who did it and level the house they live in to dust.

And then build them another free one?

    It's after happening again tonight

Time now to take it away imo.

Either that or put a fence around it and booby trap it.

    The statue or Sheriff street?

Yes because that happens all of the time here.

Leave it there and don't clean it. Leave it as a monument to the area. If those living there have any decency, they'll sort it out themselves. Let the community pay for the cleaning themselves. If they don't clean it, then they're not the salt of the earth they claim to be and it will serve as a constant reminder to them.
They get everything else for free. They don't realise how lucky they are.
Free housing in a city centre location, free education, free healthcare. They are spoiled and have a learned helplessness due to life long and inter generational welfare dependency.

Why not move it and place it at a position of prominence on o Connell st maybe 10 foot up on a stand with railings/bars so that ppl cannot “attack” it

In life he would have had roadies and bouncers to protect him from the riff raft attending his gigs, as well as the supporting band. I think if you also had head statues for all of these then Luke would be better protected.

Did his concerts attract a “troublesome” clientele back in the day?

That f*cking thing on our main street?

It would want to be behind bulletproof glass.

I had to Google who Luke Kelly was. Do we honestly think kids from the area will know who he is and therefore respect the statue?

It's a massive severed head! It gets on the news any time someone spray paints it. Prime target.

What is the hair and beard made of? Surprised that never seems to get wrecked, looks a fragile part of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,851 ✭✭✭✭Beechwoodspark

Why not put high powered flood lights on it and hi def cctv cameras monitored by store st garda station and an ear splitting alarm if anyone touches the statue

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭tastyt

Anyone who didn’t expect this to happen to a statue up there is very naive

I mean honestly, what did people think was going to happen. As someone else said either move it or just leave it and don’t clean it

The alarm should play The Rare Ould Times at 140 dB

This isn't as bad but it was hilarious

When did Niall Quinn get a statue??

The spray paint should be analysed to find out what hardware shop sold it.

Then it's a simple matter to find the nearest Post Office, where the dole money came from that bought the paint.

    Then they'll have the culprit!

To be honest the Luke Kelly statue is a bit creepy.

A decapitated head, don't like it myself regardless of the idiot who keeps vandalising it.

They should plug it into the mains. Zap any scrote like a fly that goes near it.

Sure only the salt of the earth type people live up there

Yeah, it's not a great statue really.. should have just been left at the other one..

Probably someone from another area did it. That's who always commit the crimes

It's actually quite a nice statue, I think it's quite unusual and striking. It will probably have to be moved at this stage as it keeps getting vandalised. Put it somewhere nice like in a park or somewhere where people can admire and appreciate it.

Put a sniper on overwatch and next time they try vandalizing it, drop them.

****heads who go around doing this sort of stuff are no loss to society.

The original paintjob actually looked better...perhaps get them back to spray paint the black over it?

Such a shame, a masterpiece of a master. Ignorance at its best. Would this have happened back in his time? No. Why? Because people back then had the cop on and respect to actually appreciate the man and his talent.

    Scum who did this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 625 ✭✭✭dd973

They should have put it in the city centre, outside Sinnotts Pub and the Stephen's Green shopping centre, plenty of footfall and opportunities for tourists to take snaps near it, he wasn't in Swedish House Mafia so does anyone really think John-Paul or Jordan from East Wall would have even heard of him?

Is that Christy Burke ...aka "one of our own".

Wonder what he means by "one of our own".....middle class salaried professionals working in IT perhaps?

its probably people coming in from Foxrock and Dalkey doing the vandalizing

No joke but there’s a different statue of Luke Kelly also in that location

Yeah it would have. That area has always been a total sh1thole. From the rampant drug dealing to the car theft and vandalism to the decades of mugging concert goers on the way to the Point. Horrible. The entire "community" is a spectacular failure and should've been broken up when the IFSC went in.

Buh wharra bout the rayer oul toimes and Bang Bang?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 95 ✭✭Central Services

What they could do is pepper the area with replica memorials. So alike that you can't tell the difference. Have At least one on every street. The chances of finding the real one to deface would be minuscule.
They could be shuffled around occasionally to keep the vandals on the back foot.

The actions of Dublin City Council are the very definition of insanity (doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome).

For me, I refer back to my previous post from the last time it was vandalised.

    What do people expect?

The native population can't help themselves. Of course it is going to get destroyed.

Now, if they wanted to reduce crime in the city (and the welfare bill), they could deploy snipers in the vicinity and use the statue as bait. Basically one big mouse trap for scumbags.

I never understood the eulogizing of that period of great poverty, hardship and crime.

Dublin City Council are playing a blinder in refusing to relocate the statue. A case is always made by others on behalf of so called disadvantaged areas that such areas are always left out, that they never have any public money spent in the locality,, don’t have enough “facilities”. By DCC standing firm it is highlighting very clearly how certain sectors from within the local community treat investment in their own community. It doesn’t matter if it’s a phone box or a piece of high quality public art. An old adage used to go that such types “didn’t sh1t in their own area/doorstep” It would appear that the IQ has dwindled with successive generations, despite the vast amount of public money invested within such areas in social workers, treatment centres, community centres etc. Keep it going as it highlights what is never talked about in the left wing media. Scumbags that deserve nothing from the rest of society as they are a blood sucking cancer.

The ancestors of the locals were probably the very ones who went on a looting spree in 1916.

Surely after the 2nd or 3rd time they'd put up CCTV to catch the culprits?

Any community 'representative' provide a reason for the constant vandalism?

Hoodie up renders CCTV useless, especially at night. And a CCTV system is just “investing” more money in the area. I suspect the dogs in the street know who’s doing it.

No surprise that the people who do it can't even spell.
