    Greetings geneaologists.

My dad is really interested in his family history, but it's hard enough getting info back past my great grandfather. i was going to buy him something to help for xmas. Something like this:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Family-Tree-Maker-2012-Platinum/dp/B005NPFKX4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1317160566&sr=8-2

Are these software packages any use? Do they help you find info? Or are they just a storage tool for info you can find yourselves?

If there's a well thought of package out there I'd be happy to hear recommendations too.

    Many thanks for your time.

    Hi Jimdeans,

That's a nice present idea for your father.

Familytree maker from Ancestry is a good product (this new version isn't out yet but I presume it's largely similar to earlier releases). It doesn't help you find your ancestry, it's just a database for storage.

If I'm totally honest, I think that's a fair bit of money to pay for genealogy software. You can buy cheaper ones online that all the same things. If you do a search in the forum, you can see what other people have used. I use genopro, which cost about $20 a long time ago.

    Here's the search returns:
