I hope this is the correct forum.

    I have a WordPress blog.

In order to update to the most recent version of the WP software, I need to update my PHP.

This has to be done by my website and blog host.

They charge £175 plus VAT for this.

    Is this normal?

    Thanks.

    D.

It should be relatively easy to do yourself

What host are you with & do you have access to c-panel?

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm with Register365; have been for years. To be fair, never a hitch.

I run website, blog, email and lots of domain name registrations (which I own, but don't use) through them.

I have access to something called "Configurable Hosting Overview" and a page called DNS Administration.

    Thanks.

I've just discovered the PHP editing page on register365.

I'm on 5.5 and it goes all the way to 5.8.

    5.7 is "Recommended".

I presume I can just select it and click Save?

    Many thanks.

Yeah that it, you should be good to go after that.

    Sorted!

I updated both my blog domain and my website domain to PHP 7.4.

I was then able to update to the latest WordPress software.

    I owe you a drink!

    Many thanks.

To be fair to your web company the move to PHP 7 can be a messy one depending on what wordpress plugins you have installed. Some plugins may not work with PHP 7 causing your whole site to break. It can be a tricky process or it can just work as in your case.

It was worth the gamble switching to PHP 7 as that is just a matter of switching back if it doesn't work. Updating wordpress is one I would leave to your web developer though. If that process breaks half way through it can be messy to get it back up and running. If you have a good tested backup at the ready then your are grand but you'd want to have that.

    Many thanks.

Needless to say, I didn't backup my WordPress blog, but all seems well.

I don't use any plugins with it.

    Thanks again.

There are many good back up plugins around but a very handy option it to just use the free duplicator plugin to create and download a snapshot of your side before doing any updates.

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/

Run this before making any changes and you are only a few clicks away from restoring exactly what you had before it all went wrong.

Changing PHP version is very easy - a control panel setting. If it broke something just switch back. Easy.

Charging 175+VAT to just change sounds crazy.

    Thanks.

As dayhayeser said above, if they had to run a load of checks on multiple plugins, then it would have taken time and they would have had to protect my data before making the changes.

But, that wasn't the case for me and I was able to do it in less than a minute, once I found the Control Panel.

    So far, all good.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the thread as I am having this exact same problem. It feels a bit like extortion coming from Register 365 considering the dosh I put into them for the little tiddly websites I have.

Regardless. I am trying to update through the cpanel to php 8 recommended is not trickling down to my domains so they can update to the latest wordpress.

    Any help appreciated.
