Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

First of thanks for doing the Q&A, I love driving across country seeing other people singing the same Christmas tunes as me. This year we cant get home for Christmas so will be listening via an app in the desert.

Q: Is there a relaxed festive atmosphere, i.e. a tipple or two and some quality street, or it all business?

Yeah one year i was in Asia for a week at Christmas and found listening in online was great so bring me home in my head.

So no drinking on air in the studio ever. It slurs words and sounds terrible on air, there's a high level of professionalism aimed for.

Its very relaxed in the studio, but depending on the show can also be very busy. IE Mornings and drive times are busy, my show Friday nights 7-10pm are a lot more party and chilled.

Why do you shut down on 26th? Why not the 30th?

Its a 30 day temporary license and we spend one of the days on test broadcasting. So when we launch it sounds professional.

Also we try to leave on a high with people wanting more.

It changes daily, I used to be a professional DJ so i love hearing songs for the first time so my car has tune in or spotify on. Although mostly I listen to Audiobooks to be honest. At the moment here's whats on my record player (yes Vinyl) in my house. I've a feeling its not for the masses.

I'm the CEO at Zatori Results Ltd, which runs TheCostumeShop.ie and several other online businesses. I'm also financial director for a marine engineering business called Martek. I sit on the Alumni board of EYs Entrepreneur of the Year. And i've a little 2 year old that does his best to make sure every other waking minute is occupied.

Prime example of busy people get things done! Fair play to you and all the volunteers

    Hi, Ronan.

Fair play on the fundraising for Temple Street this year. A very worthy cause that is often overlooked.

May I ask how you choose your playlist for the station? I enjoy flicking to the station on the build up to Christmas, but I do find the playlist fairly repetitive. (I don't mean that in a "you're always playing Christmas songs" way!)

Are there a particular set of Christmas songs that you feel meet what the station is slot, and therefore exclude other Christmas songs?

One example I would give is an album called "Funny Looking Angels" by Smith & Burrows. Is an album of Christmas* songs, some of which are beautifully done, in particular "Only You". I'm sure there are plenty of other artists that have done similar Christmas albums that could be added to the playlist.

Finally, your station introduced me to "Feliz Navidad" and for that I am eternally grateful :)

So there are 5 online stations and only one on FM radio. Each plays a particular type of music to do with Christmas.

Our research shows the average person only listens in for about 15-17 minutes at a time on average and in the car was the most popular location. During that time they want to hear the "Best" Christmas music. So its a balance between Mariah Carey and the Pogues on repeat and catering to those who listen the whole day while in work.

Smith & Burrows hadn't heard of them before. Youtubed them though. The issue there is its more pop than Christmas music, it is above love not Christmas. We are very wary of ending up like other stations, who already cater to pop music. At the risk of sounding controversial. Back in the Mid 90's Pulse FM sounded so unbelievably different to all other radio stations. Now days, stations all sound the same in my opinion and you could hear the same song on nearly any station in Ireland and it wouldn't be out of place. If we get confused for any other station then we are more likely not to get the license renewed. So we let the commercial stations play pop music and we play cheesy Christmas music.

Will you have Santa on this year, so the kids can listen to him?

I'll ask him, His schedule is usually quite busy this time year but we have a direct line into the elves to get all the back ground info.

Yes this song is on the playlist for the last few years in one form or another.

The Christmas FM App works all year round, who looks after that during the year?

Same management team, but its operated by a computer and no live DJs, just voice overlays. Same play list etc. Also means songs can be voted up and down to help us with play list selection. It was something we were asked for, people who dont get the family home for Christmas have started having A Christmas experience whenever they do get together.

Oddly my other business TheCostumeShop.ie sees an uptake in Christmas outfits in June for "HalfMas" (Half Chirstmas) - which is remarkably taking off in Australia from what i've seen.

Why do you play so much shyte Christmas music? "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" etc. There are so many beautiful traditional carols that are available. Why not pop some of these into your playlists instead of the bubblegum tunes you churn out?

Try Christmas FM Classical, might be more your bag.

Why do we play patsy and Elmo, because its awesome and kids love it.

We get asked for hard rock Christmas songs on Christmas FM Ireland a lot, its clearly not the style we play. And do hard rockers really listed to Christmas Music?
    CheerLouth wrote: »
How do you decide who does the Christmas Day shows?

Initially we didn't have Christmas day live, we got complaints here on Boards.ie and other places (text donations complaining etc) about it. I see that a lot in my life people complaining about things that they themselves wouldn't do but expect others to.

The first year it was just me and Walter that volunteered. To be honest the management didn't even ask the volunteers because Christmas day is so special, its a big ask. However you guys (the listeners) were so generous with donations that it made it worthwhile.

Now days i've a toddler and 15 coming to dinner at my house so I don't think i'll be on air Christmas Day but we have no shortage of volunteers. They do shorter shows, 1 to 2 hours. They are busy shows so the people at the top of the tree then choose based on experience and talent. Christmas Fm really does have the best team.

    I love Christmas FM
Especially on a Saturday morning, driving from Kinvara to Kilfenora Via the Burren Perfumery.
I was off sick a few years ago and I had to make that journey frequently with my neck in a brace.
It made the journey more entertaining,as it was foggy and frosty those evenings... really Christmassy.

I've no questions only to say I love Christmas FM

Depends, If you work in Radio and have lots of on air experience then that helps and get in touch for next year.

If you haven't Adrian Nolan teaches a Radio training course and uses our Studio which could be a nice Xmas present to someone. We've picked up some presenters who've done that course.

Never heard of it, maybe they should enter it into our Coca Cola Christmas Fm song competition. That would give it the most Airplay if its good enough.

Sounds like a great and important cause, but for us we will only be focusing in on our Charity Partner Temple Street Hospital this year.

Could be a bit difficult to ask the staff to give up their new years eve as well so that they have a clear head for the final day. For the Volunteers that work the 30 days in a row without a break, i think the few days off is an absolute must. Remember they have to go back to their real make a living jobs straight after Christmas.

Christmas FM will still be on the app, just no live DJs and no FM license as the license period is strict.

Also while some are keen to hear Christmas FM, many need to "find" us and add us to their presets by wandering on the dial for a song they like so being on early helps us get the audience and hence the donations.

Yeah we have a great solution for this... its the off button. We don't force anyone to listen and if helping out Temple Street and delivering a little bit of magic is consumerism then sign me up.

I see your point of view, Christmas FM, Christmas music or Christmas itself isn't for everyone. Personally I choose to buy into halloween, Christmas when we are lucky enough to have it ChristMarch. Happiness is a choice, choose your own bliss.

You know what. After I realized that yours is a charity organization I pm'd a mod to delete my comment. But given your response I regret that.

There is no OFF BUTTON when it comes to xmas.

Just today on the news I heard a report that went 'xmas is a hard and stressful time for some ppl'. It's a reality that families don't get on and at xmas they are forced to be together, serving to bring out tensions between families, not alleviate them. How on earth has it come to pass that the lovely xmas is hard on ppl? That doesn't make any sense whatsoever if one really believes in the MAGIC.

It has come to pass because xmas is forced down ppl's throats such that if one has no interest in it one is considered an odd ball. Thats how pernicious xmas has become.

All xmas does for ppl who are less well off or don't have the most loving stable relationships is to remind them what they don't have, some kind of idyllic life that is unattainable in their personal existance.

I'm all for charity, but not on the back of xmas commercialism.

You station may be a charitable organization but I'd argue if you were really charitable you's raise funds some other way that doesn't market xmas as if it were magic, cause it isn't.

OK some say it should be Z rated but NOT me! No, I think it's up there with the bag of Cats screaming Carey's All I want for Xmas! It's A rated and should be played on the Hour every Hour!!! eh?

To be clear we are a non for Profit rather than a charity. The Charity Partner this year is a Children's Hospital Called Temple Street. We think they do amazing work. We want to use the airwaves and the internet to tell people about it.

On the back of commercialism - We demand nothing back we just ask, we don't charge to tune in or listen. Many many people tune in and never donate to us or the charity. Thats not a problem, the more listeners that listen the more awareness of Temple Street Hospital that happens.

I completely understand that Christmas and many other times of the year are stressful for people. We don't intend to add to this and as said before not participating is easy - don't volunteer and don't tune in.

Look we are aiming to make €100,000 this year, on the back of €1,300,000 we've made in the past decade for charities. It sounds like you might have ideas on how you can raise similar fund's in other manners. I can only encourage you to take massive action and focus your attention on that to make those idea's happen. We do our best in the ways we know how and we are passionate about radio and frankly choose to enjoy Christmas.

Its certainly not my place to offer advice in this representative capacity on Boards. But my personal philosophy is I avoid negative influences and people (regardless of their bloodline). And I find serving others makes me feel good so I do it. Even cheesier than Christmas is that when you give good vibes out there, they tend to come back. That might be the most hippiest thing I've ever said.

An example is spending a few hours in the past being on the radio Christmas Day, instead of being with my Family. I choose to do some work to volunteer on air, because I love doing it. And I had a lovely text in from a person who was home and lonely, having a turkey sandwich and we had a great conversation. I think we made each others day and it was such a privilege being in the back ground in so many homes.

I really hope something nice happens in the next month for you and maybe this will be a happy Christmas. And I hope you understand we are a radio station not the entire season.

So why won't they play red empire charity single all proceeds are going to the homeless.

You had specifically asked would i play it. Its not suitable for my Friday night show as I try to play more upbeat / cheery music for those having house parties and getting ready to go out.

The song has been on you-tube for over a year and has very few plays (less than 2400) and its fighting for a place with songs that have over 60M you tube listens. That's not how we select them, but just to point out that we try to play the most popular best Christmas songs on Christmas FM Ireland, that have captured the publics imagination. We aren't saying our 5 different styles or tastes of Christmas music, on our 5 different radio stations to cater for different audiences, are the only styles but we have to make choices and at the moment I'm not aware that that specific song made the cut.

Homelessness is a huge issue and we have considered a homeless charity partner this year. We've worked with Focus Ireland before and felt Temple Street Hospital was a good choice.

I'm not sure if this is your band or you just a huge fan, but the best way I can see of trying to get the public aware of it would be to enter it into The Coca Cola Christmas FM song contest - which is where we give new songs a chance to shine. If you don't want to do that maybe get everyone you know to text in and request it, if demand is high enough we do consider that too. And ofcourse Temple Street get much needed funds from the text requests.
