good swedish thrillers

    enjoyed reading the millenium trillogy and read somewhere that theres other good, if not better, swedish crime writers out there. so if anyone can recommend an author or books like the steig larrson ones would be great!

    I would deffo recommend Jo Nesbo (Norwegian) to start with. You won't be disappointed!

    Never read any, but Henning Mankell's Inspector Wallander novels are popular. There is a series of Swedish TV movies based on the books, and the BBC has been remaking them in English, with Kenneth Branagh starring as the lead.

    I read a couple by Liza Marklund that were very good "Studio Sex" and "Prime Time" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liza_Marklund).
    Kerstin Ekman had two amazing books called "Blackwater" and "Under the Snow". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerstin_Ekman) The former won lots of prizes.

    Swedish crime novels are an export industry. They're written with a view to the German and more recently English speaking markets. It started with Sjöwall & Wahlöö in the 60s. The are probably the best along with Henning Mankell. They give a view of the Social Democratic welfare state and how it didn't live up to its promises.

    Of the current bunch Arne Dahl is the best in my opinion. Crime novels are great for exploring social issues and he examines a more modern globalised EU memberstate.

    Lars Kepler does well sales wise. But I think they're writing to sell copies and they know they're cashing in on the Swedish crime novel boom.

    Camilla Läckberg writes these god awful crime novels. She's self-made, ambitious and her novels say nothing about the world. Fluff writing direct for bored housewives.

    If I was to recommend one writer it would be John Ajvide Lindqvist. He writes horror in modern day settings. Another great device for analysing society. Vampires in the suburbs. But not the sexy american tv drama or teen fiction ones. Proper vampires. Watch the film of his book Låt den rätte komma in.

    The Horrific Sufferings of the Mind-Reading Monster Hercules Barefoot: His Wonderful Love and His Terrible Hatred by Carl-Johan Vallgren

    Not strictly a thriller but a gripping read. About a telepathic dwarf in the 1800s.

    Harbour is better though :)
