Friend bought a Kitchenaid mixer from US today but wondering does he have to get a transformer to convert voltage between US and Irish/UK voltage. Where would he pick up a neat transformer that wouldn't look out of place on kitchen worktop.

Yes he does, the US appliance will require a voltage of 110V and 60 Hz frequency.

He will need to buy a transformer, you can buy then on Amazon. You need to check the power (Watts) rating on the appliance. A recent thread over in the Electrical forum here suggested 335W for a Kitchenaid so you should be looking at a transformer that can handle up to 500W - the 'W' is sometimes called 'VA'.
