Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hello all, where can I go to find information on Irish Clan Symbols, like those used to display on flags and banners in the days before the English Coat of Arms? Thank you!

    Hi Tuck,

Can you give us more information please?

Ireland doesn't really have a clan structure like Scotland. Families did use coats of arms but they were granted to a specific family, rather than anyone with that surname. The office of the Chief Herald in the National Library has more info:

Hi, thank you. I was referring to what this article says: http://www.heraldry.ws/info/article03.html

According to this article the Irish clans/families didn't really have a coat of arms until the English started that in Ireland. Before that each clan had a symbol that was displayed on flags and banners, for example in battle. The symbol belonged to the family/clan since it represented that family/clan.
