Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ancestry costs

    Has anybody tried on of those genealogy websites? most want you to pay a fee for checking a record of a person, but i might have to check ten records before you find the right person so costing a lot is there an alternative?

    ancestry charge per month and not per record

    There are few Irish records that you can't find for free elsewhere.

    You need to speak to the oldest members of your family to see how far back you can go without needing to pay for sites.

    If you're family is mostly Irish then you'll end up spending more on birth-certs and marriage certs (not available on ancestry).

    It's really not worth paying for Ancestry unless you have UK/US genealogy at this time.

    If you have a read of our stickies, that will get you started without having to spend any money. But talk to the oldest people in your family first.

    I reckon the OP is talking about the IFHF site (rootsireland.ie), where it can be ridiculously hard to find the individual you are looking for if the name is common in an area. As has been already pointed out, there are lots of free sources that are worth checking first. You can access a lot of records for free in many places in Dublin (see the sticky as was already pointed out), or at an LDS Family History Centre if you're fortunate enough to be near one.
