Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    A very interesting Gospel, but also a very deep Gospel to try to understand what Jesus is trying to teach us here.

    This Gospel appears to be a lesson in reconciliation. But who does the Gospel refer to? Is the Gospel referring to individual people? Or is the Gospel referring to maintaining and restoring Church unity?

    The reference to Heaven and Earth is straightforward.

    St.Matthew's gospel asks the very hard question. Like the prodigal son's elder brother, this gospel asks us to go beyond what we might think is justified.

    Commentary: Hahn - The first group being the repentant sinner and the second is taken to mean those that profess an outward show of piety but do not walk in their hearts the path of righteousness.

    I've heard explanations for every single passage above, that were different from the "Hahn" interpretation. But that latest one takes the cake. I think its quite obvious that it means, either A) Watch, for you don't know when Gods second coming will be, or B), watch, because you don't know when you'll die. Leaning towards A myself. Nothing to do with pastors and doorkeepers.

    Hahn is shorthand for "Ignatius Catholic Bible New Testament" by Scott Hahn, a noted apologist. I'm usually paraphrasing his take on the passages, but in this case for specifically 13:34 it is fairly close to what he describes the text to relate to.
    eg "The pastors of the Church are the doorkeepers, guarding against the intrusion of the devil until Christ's glorious return. "

    Evenso, its a metaphor for Gods second coming to Earth, ie the master returning to his property. You'd better ready for his arrival. No mention of the devil, or in keeping with the metaphor, thieves coming to rob the place.


    And the previous one - to me, that passage is all about seeing Jesus in other people. Be kind to everyone, especially those less fortunate than you. Then, when you die, your deeds will be cashed up, and you will be rewarded or punished accordingly. But Hahn takes a completely tangential view, and makes out that the main point of the passage is the final judgement! Its a related point, sure, but its not the main one. I find these interpretations bizarre to be honest.

    My best interpretation is he was specifically discussing the phrase "He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his own work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch.".

    Jesus is talking about Armageddon here. if we read the proceeding verses in Mark 13 Jesus tells us the signs or the things that must take place before the
    end comes. than, using an analogy of a master returning to his house, Jesus tells us, his "servants" to be on the watch for his return.

    but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.
    And coming forward at that very time,
    she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child
    to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

    When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions
    of the law of the Lord,
    they returned to Galilee,
    to their own town of Nazareth.
    The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;
    and the favor of God was upon him.

    This is what John the Baptist proclaimed:

    Simon and those who were with him pursued him
    and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.”
    He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages
    that I may preach there also.
    For this purpose have I come.”

    preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

    Interesting; in the Church of Ireland lectionary, tomorrow's gospel is the opening chapter of John. One of the most power pieces of writing in the entire gospels, in my opinion.

    Commentary (Hahn): The temptation echoes earlier similar such which Adam and the nation of Israel experienced.

    This is the Roman Catholic reading for tomorrow. Interestingly, the Anglican reading starts at verse nine, at the baptism of Jesus, linking it directly to his going out into the wilderness. So, in a way, linking the pledge with God made at baptism with its manifestation in testing oneself to resist temptations and to endure hardship.

    Useful food for thought in this Lenten season, perhaps?

    Jesus took Peter, James, and John
    and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.
    And he was transfigured before them,
    and his clothes became dazzling white,
    such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
    Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,
    and they were conversing with Jesus.
    Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
    “Rabbi, it is good that we are here!
    Let us make three tents:
    one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
    He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.
    Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;

    “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
    Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone
    but Jesus alone with them.

    As they were coming down from the mountain,

    “Take these out of here,
    and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.”
    His disciples recalled the words of Scripture,
    Zeal for your house will consume me.
    At this the Jews answered and said to him,
    “What sign can you show us for doing this?”
    Jesus answered and said to them,
    “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”
    The Jews said,
    “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years,
    and you will raise it up in three days?”
    But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
    Therefore, when he was raised from the dead,
    his disciples remembered that he had said this,
    and they came to believe the Scripture
    and the word Jesus had spoken.

    While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover,
    many began to believe in his name
    when they saw the signs he was doing.
    But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all,
    and did not need anyone to testify about human nature.
    He himself understood it well.

    Ah, the same as the Anglican lectionary this time.

    We did a Lenten preparation for this gospel during the week, where we looked at the story from the points of view of all the people who would have been there. We even role-played - I was a money changer! I had to describe how I felt about this madman running around upsetting tables and ruining my business...

    It was a very interesting exercise, and really made you see what Jesus was trying to do, and how it would have affected people.

    Jesus said to Nicodemus:
