Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    heil-hitler-woman.jpg

I know that I might be two years too late, but I just wanted to point out that the description of the image might be false due to the unfortunate cropping of the image. The picture was taken in the German part of Czechoslovakia where the Anschluss was welcomed by the local population (as you can see on the original image):
    Bundesarchiv_Bild_183-H13160%2C_Beim_Einmarsch_deutscher_Truppen_in_Eger.jpg
So it might as well have been tears of joy...

A rare pic of a Stuka with passenger pods. The overwing passenger pods tried on the Ju.87D-3 were the ultimate expression of the concept, making the pods almost an integral part of the aircraft. Each pod could carry two passengers. They were designed to be released whilst the aircraft was in a shallow dive, descending on a huge parachute.

    Hi guys.
My name is Ian and I am originally from Carlow.
I actually know many of the ww2 collectors here which is cool.
I wanted to invite you guys to see some of my photos. I am putting all my original color photos from ww2 in the different sections of the site to organise things.
Its kinda cool because i have been talking about this idea with other collectors at the north star military fairs for years and now I have actually started.

So please let me know what you guys think.
    Best wishes.

    Thanks Marc.
I am really happy now to start showing some of my collection.
It was just a real pity having all these great original ww2 color photos hidden away in boxes.
Better to let the world enjoy them and also for me to learn a lot more about them !

    Best wishes.

    Hi Ian,
I am a fairly small scale collector and I would love to get a few photos to add to my collection. Can you direct me to a good place for a beginner to start buying photos without getting ripped off with fakes. It is only German photos I am interested in if that makes any difference.
    Cheers.

Ebay is full of fakes but if you know what to be wary of then you can pick up quite cheap pictures on there.

There are advantages and disadvantages to using it though. Some photo collectors I know refuse to go near it others use it quite often.

Buying at a fair is more expensive but you get to physically inspect them and also haggle, trade etc. Online you are going by the sellers description and photos that are sometimes deliberately badly taken.

Source wise - if you are based in Ireland then the militaria fairs at Teachers club and North star. Online then I'd recommend ebay (again stressing that there are a LOT Of fakes on there). Recently someone was selling photos from the 'War and Peace 2010' show dressed up to look vintage and artificially aged. So you need to be careful - also of original pictures reprinted and aged. I'd recommend only purchase cheap ones to start off with until you are comfortable at being able to spot real from fake. Don't buy anything marked as 'Russian Archives', or with CCCP stamps on the backs. I'd be wary of sellers in east europe or russia - this sounds bad but it's good advice re ebay and ww2 photo sales in my experience

Here is a good reference site put together by a well known ww2 photo collector called Robert Noss :

    http://www.kriegsberichter.de/Data/fake01e.htm

The boards.ie militaria forum has info on fairs :

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1003

Also worth checking out would be the WAF site
    http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/index.php
which has a photo section and also a photo for sale section. There are millions of other dealer sites too :

    http://www.janssen-militaria.com/
    http://www.historical-media.com

You will still find interesting items cropping up at fairs locally in Germany which will be cheaper than internet or dealers (as Ian can testify to) but if your based for the most part in Ireland the above should be enough info to get started building up a unique and interesting collection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,542 ✭✭✭BlackEdelweiss

    Cheers for that,
I bought a few from ebay the other day to see how I got on, 9 photos for €20. I know they could be fakes but it wont break the bank if they are, as you say it is a good way to get to know what is what. I will have a look through the links tomorrow.

Here are a few I posted in the militaria forum :

Here are a few photographs from a set I picked up recently.

It's a collection of original unpublished photographs showing SS Polizei in Norway. Featured are a Winter sports event at Skeikampen (possibly April 14 to April 20 1942).

Other locations include Hemsedal, Ullensvang & Vikersund.

Featured are police General August Meyzsner who at that time was BdO (Befehlshaber der Ordnungspolizei) in Norway, members of the SS (Schutzstaffel) and SD (Sicherheitsdienst) in Norway & the notorious Reichskomissar Josef Terboven & SS-Gruf. Wilhelm Rediess. Also included in this set are Schutzpolizei.

sure Ian, will do, glad you like em. I have a few others, like this example below.

    AuntieDoreenRAF1944.jpg

My aunt Doreen (died 2006) in the WAFS 1944. My uncle met her serving in the RAF. Her fiance, a Canadian, was killed in an air raid over Germany in November 1944, after which she met my uncle Joe. He settled in Surrey when they got married after the war.

I think that both photographs are of Lancasters. The 2nd one has bomb bay converted to a passanger cabin and hence the windows. I don't think I have seen such a picture before, but, hands up, post-war ex-RAF isn't really my thing.
Wellington was much smaller and covered with fabric.

Apparently a rare image, this is how the German's recovered seaplanes in coastal areas. They could also be catapulted from these ships. Photo taken near Bergen, Norway.

Excellent pictures. I think 'maritime aviation' is one part of ww2 not very well known. Many people do not know that late war u-boats had (what were effectively) one man helicopters :

    uboat.gif

    u-boat20helicopter1.jpg

Or about the Jap sub that was also an aircraft carrier :

    i400hamgar3.jpg

On a related note a fellow collector recently lent me a ww2 german photo album to photograph which includes pictures taken from the window of a seaplane coming in to land. Then pictures of it half submerged after it crashed on landing. I will post them on this thread when I get them online.
