No planning permission for a fence

    Hello.

    When we bought our house there was fence running from the side to the front of the house. It is neither in front or side.

    When we did an extension we had to knock the fence for access and rebuild it. The fence is 2m high.

    More recently we built a 1.2 mete fence to the front of the house, separating us from our neighbour.

    We got a warning letter from planning about building a fence but they didn't specify which one.

    My question is whether the side fence will be okay given such a fence has been there for close on 20 years now? Granted the fence that is there now is new, it is merely the same height etc as before. That fence cuts off the side of our house but you can see it from the front. It is totally inoffensive.

    A fence that is behind the front building line of the house would have to be more than 2 metres high before it requires planning permission.

    Just to add that fences up to 1.20 high to the front are exempt.

    I'm a little confused by the nature of the fence.

    You say "fence running from the side to the front of the house. It is neither in front or side." So it's not in front of the house, or to the side of the house?

    What exactly was newly-built?

    As muffler says, any fence running from the front of the building to the front boundary of the property, cannot be more than 1.2m without planning. A fence running from the front of the building to the rear boundary can be up to 2m high without planning.

    Only if not excluded in the original planning permission of the estate, some permissions allow for no hard boundaries between properties at the front of the houses
