Firewire - Sony Handycam to PC

Hi,
Trying to convert some old videos and looking for the best (and cheapest) way to connect a Sony Handycam to a PC.

Camcorder and and PC bot have firewire ports

What cable should I go with - Firewire to firewire or firewire to USB?

The vast majority of Firewire to USB wont work. Firewire or IEEE 1394 is the way to go, you'll have to figure out if its a 6 pin or 4 pin socket. So check the type of Firewire ports on the cam and the computer first.

The camcorder and the laptop (an old hp workstation) have ports that seem to suit this. Would it work?

that should do the job, you should be able to use something like Sony's PlayMemories Home to capture the video stream.
