Hi all,

Making a window frame

    I bought a 2nd hand triple glazed window and have removed glass. I need to build a smaller frame for the glass so that it fits with frame into 190cm x 50cm. What wood and joins should I use for frame.


    Glass is 180cm x 40cm and weights 10kg

    traditional woods for window frames would include larch heartwood, scots pine (red deal) and heartwood of oak amongst others.
    joints are usually mortice and tenon.

    Assuming you are going to paint it you will find Iroko the easiest to find.Not to be confused with Teak - some outlets sell it as ' Teak/ Iroko' :eek: Of course you will have to machine it unless you are getting it done by a joinery works.Scots pine was the traditional wood of the Georgians/Victorians.
    Ideally you should use a mortise and tenon joint but I have seen finger joints milled on a spindle moulder used . If you have no other way then a glued half lap joint is perfectly strong.
