Is it possible to trace an adopted person you're not related to?

A friend of mine recently discovered that his grandfather wasn't her grandmother's husband, she's done an ancestry DNA test & found some family members of the man who is - nieces & nephews. All living in far flung places. Turns out he had one daughter himself who passed away in infancy & a couple of years later had a fling…

A friend of mine recently discovered that his grandfather wasn't her grandmother's husband, she's done an ancestry DNA test & found some family members of the man who is - nieces & nephews. All living in far flung places.

Turns out he had one daughter himself who passed away in infancy & a couple of years later had a fling with her grandmother which resulted in her mother. Her grandmother was separated at the time and although she very quickly reunited with her husband, brought up her mother as their own.

He then went on to adopt a boy later that year with his wife. She knows the boy (man)'s name & approximate date of birth from one of the cousins, but nobody knows anything about him.

Would it be possible for her to try to trace the adopted son to try to find out information about her natural grandfather - what he was like, family ailments etc?
