Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ill probably get booed off the boards for saying this, but Gerry Ryan was one helluva great irishman..
Eloquent, passionate, intelligent and a pleasure to listen to every morning.

You should pick people that made an impact on Ireland to improve it greatly, the best ones of those are :

    1. Eamonn De Valera ( Considered Irish )
    2. Michael Collins
    3. Sean Lemass

Don't pontificate who people should pick.

It is a individuals choice who resonates with them personally the most.

eamonn de valera are you serious? He was nothing but a coward, otherwise Collins and Lemass are great choices.

    Possibly good choices except :

Shane McGowan is English (born in London)

Brendan Behan & Luke Kelly are both dead unfortunately.

A big negative impact. It's greatest living irishman, not worst living irishman.

Can I ask you why do you think lots of people don't like him?

I live in Italy and here he's idolized, someone could not love U2 and their music but I don't know anybody who doubt his greatness.

It's a thing we have in Ireland where we hate anybody successful. Michael O'Leary, Gerry Ryan RIP, Ryan Tubridy, Pat Kenny, Enda Kenny, Robbie Keane, Bono.... the list goes on. They are all hated by a large number of people. Jealousy and spite are part of our make-up apparently.

I'm glad to say Im not like most of my compatriots. I love U2 too by the way. Their music is still the best there is.

Honestly, I have no problem with him, but I do think that a lot of people are jealous (of his fame etc.) or guilty that he actually does attempt charity work etc when most people don't bother. Also, he didn't exactly help his popularity ratings when U2 moved out to avoid paying tax.

Shane McGowan is from Tipp, he was born in England but only because his mother was on holiday there.

So I ask, if a dog is born in a stable, does that make him a horse?

I'd disagree with thetonynator saying that a lot of people are jealous (of his fame etc.) by this reasoning are the same people jealous of Ronan Keating? or for that matter are the English people jealous of Mick Jagger because of his fame? Your assuming this because you think we all have aspirations to be famous and because we don't fulfill these "goals" we somehow resent the people that did?

I cant speak for every single person in Ireland as to why so many people dislike him but my reason is because he never did a thing to help his own and if he did he never made it a long term comment like he has done with the poorer countries around the world.

John Sugrue fallacy about The Irish hating anybody successful...I hope he is being sarcastic.
