New groupset for Trek 7500

Hey All, I got a 2006 model, Trek 7500 that has lasted me fine until now. I recently got new brakes and the frame is fine. The other components have started to show their age. I only use it to get around locally at the moment but would like to start using it for fitness once more.
I basically want to replace most of the Drivechain components but don't know where to start. My current gear config is 3x9 which it seems has become quite archaic I always thought 3 front gears caused more problems than anything.
can I put other configs like 2x10 or 2x11 on it and what groupsets are out there around the €400 price range? I'm not really looking to buy a new bike at the moment either.

You could get this 2 X 10 groupset, which should suit your frame

You'd also have to get a new bottom bracket, about 25 yoyo

It's well within your budget.

What are the forks and suspension seat post like on your bike?

To be honest, you'd be better off without that seat post and those forks.
After 13 years, I'm sure they add nothing to the comfort or performance of your bike.

I know you said you're not looking to buy a new bike but for your budget of 400 you could get a new Trek FX1 just to put it into perspective.

Seems a lot of money to spend on a bike that old unless you are particularly attached to it, which I get. My run around bike is 15 years old and I've been threatening to retire it for the last 5 years but end up just replacing what ever part needed replacing
